    1 Introduction

The Danish Ministry of Transport and Femern Blt A/S have signed an agree-

ment with DTU Transport to undertake the work related to establishing a

trransport model for the future fixed link across the Femern Belt.

To establish the transport model, data on the movement of passenger traffic

crossing the Baltic Sea is necessary. COWI has signed an agreement with DTU

Transport to undertake the data collection.

The data collection was carried out in the spring and summer of 2010.

    1.1 Origin-destination survey

The purpose of the survey is to establish an origin-destination (OD) matrix for

the passenger traffic across Femern Belt and in the significant corridors. This

covers both ferry lines and the national border between Denmark and Germany.

Type of passengers Investigating the movement of passenger traffic crossing the Baltic Sea

involves surveying amongst four types of passengers:

    Car drivers

Disembarkation passengers Bus passengers (travelling with buses driving directly on board)

Train passengers (travelling with trains driving directly on board).

Airline passengers are not included in this survey but are covered in a different

    survey.

Ferry lines The following ferry lines are included in the survey:

    Sweden-Poland:

    - Ystad-Swinoujscie

    - Trelleborg-Swinoujscie.

    Sweden-Germany:

    - Trelleborg-Sassnitz

    - Trelleborg-Rostock

    - Trelleborg-Travemnde.

    Denmark-Poland: - Copenhagen-Swinoujscie.

    Denmark-Germany:

    - Gedser-Rostock

    - Rdby-Puttgarden

    - National land border.

    Norway-Germany: - Oslo-Kiel.

On the ferry routes between Sweden and Germany and Denmark and Germany,

interviews were carried out in both directions except for Trelleborg-

Travemnde. The spring survey was not carried out in Travemnde, and the

summer survey was not carried out in Trelleborg, due to problems with the

permissions from ferry companies and authorities in the ports.

On the other ferry routes, interviews were only carried out for one direction,

and the summer survey was not carried out in Copenhagen.

Bus passengers Some ferry companies allow buses to drive on board with the passengers

remaining in the buses, while others require the bus passengers to walk on

    board.

When the bus passengers walked on board, they were interviewed as disembar-

kation passengers. When they remained in the bus, personal interviews with the

    bus drivers were carried out.

    .

The personal interview with the bus driver is a short version of the question-

naire for disembarkation passengers. The interview contains general questions

about the passengers' trip on the bus. The registration of origin and destination

of the journey is therefore the passengers' journey on the bus and not necessar-

ily the origin and destination of the passengers' entire journey.

Train passengers The train passengers are those travelling between Denmark and Germany via

the Rdby-Puttgarden ferry. The interviews with the passengers were carried

out as personal interviews on the train. Interviewers travelled between Copen-

hagen and Rdby and back, only interviewing passengers travelling across the

Femern Belt. The personal interview is similar to the questionnaire for disem-

barkation passengers, but adjusted to train passengers.

National land border The survey covering the car drivers crossing the national land border between

Denmark and Germany was carried out at the Great Belt Bridge. It is neither

possible nor legal to stop the cars at the national border, but at the Great Belt

Bridge there is a natural stop in the tollbooth.

Car drivers in the tollbooth received a questionnaire. Afterwards questionnaires

from only car drivers crossing the land border were analysed.

The survey was carried out in August and September 2010, and questionnaires

were handed out on a Wednesday and a Saturday in the two periods.

The questionnaire was adjusted to car drivers travelling across the Great Belt

Bridge and to the purpose of picking out passengers crossing the national land

    border between Denmark and Germany.

    1.2 Questionnaire

Two different questionnaires were given to car drivers and disembarkation pas-

    sengers.

The questionnaire was prepared in Danish, Swedish, German, Polish, Norwe-

    gian and English.

The questionnaire includes questions on the following topics:

    Origin Destination

Purpose and duration of journey Number of passengers travelling together

    Car availability Residence

Feeder and egress mode (only embarkation passengers) Number of trips

Total household income Gender and age.

    Car drivers and dis-

    embarkation passen-

    gers

    .

Passengers who were willing to participate in further surveys related to this

study were asked to fill in their name and email.

The questionnaire for car passengers and the one for disembarkation passengers

    are shown in the appendix.

    1.3 Zoning system

The collected origin and destination data was translated into a zone system. The

zone system is very detailed for Denmark, the southern part of Sweden and the

northern part of German, but less detailed for the rest of Europe.

The zoning system was designed by DTU Transport, and all addresses in the

customer survey were translated according to the zone system.

    1.4 Number of interviews

Based on statistics from 2008, covering the number of cars and passengers on

the ferry lines mentioned above, random samples were estimated. Obtaining

this number of questionnaires requires permissions to carry out surveys in all

ports. The following tables show the expected number of returned question-

naires and the actual number of returned questionnaires.

Table 1.1 Number of expected and obtained questionnaires from car passengers.

Table 1.1 shows that the actual number of questionnaires obtained from pas-

sengers travelling by car is approximately 30 per cent less than expected. The

survey was not carried out on the ferry line between Gothenburg and Kiel, as

the ferry company did not permit the survey. As the table shows, obtaining a

satisfying number of questionnaires from the different ferry lines was not

    equally successful from all lines.

After the spring survey had been carried out, the number of returned question-

naires was evaluated. The number was not satisfactory, leading to changes be-

ing made for the summer survey.

Instead of handing out questionnaires in Trelleborg and Copenhagen, the sur-

vey was extended by one day in the ports of Sassnitz, Rostock and

    Travemnde.

Furthermore the number of questionnaire handed out was raised by increasing

the number of persons handing out questionnaires in the ports.

Despite the changes made in connection with the summer survey, the expected

result was still not reached. The total number of questionnaires handed out was

raised, but the passengers did not return the questionnaires.

Table 1.2 Number of expected and obtained questionnaires from disembarkation

    passengers.

Table 1.2 shows the expected numbers of returned questionnaires from disem-

barkation passenger including bus passengers. On some ferry lines it was not

possible to hand out questionnaire to bus passengers, so number of obtained

questionnaires are mainly from other disembarkation passengers.

Table 1.2 shows that the actual number of questionnaires obtained from disem-

barkation passengers is approximately 90 per cent less than expected because of

    the missing bus passengers.

Apart from the same problems with the survey as described with car passen-

gers, the major problem with the disembarkation passengers were as mentioned

the bus passengers. Bus passengers were scheduled to be interviewed on dis-

embarkation, but as some ferry companies allow bus passengers to remain on

the bus while driving on board, it was not possible to hand out questionnaires to

the bus passengers. The problem was detected during the spring survey, and the

solution was to carry out personal interviews with the bus driver instead.

The personal interviews with the bus drivers were carried out at Gedser-Ro-

stock in spring and at Rdby-Puttgarden, Gedser-Rostock and Trelleborg-

    Rostock in summer.

The following table shows the results from the survey among the disembarka-

tion passengers, including interviews with the bus drivers. The interviews with

the bus drivers are included with the sum of the total number of passenger car-

ried by the buses whose drivers were interviewed.

Table 1.3 shows a much better result from the ferry lines which allow the bus

passengers to remain on the bus and for which an interview with the bus drivers

    was carried out.

Train passengers 303 personal interviews with passengers travelling by train between Denmark

and Germany by Rdby-Puttgarden were obtained.

Great Belt Bridge The result of the survey on the Great Belt Bridge is presented in the following

    table.

Not all the returned questionnaires are usable. The usable returned question-

naires are those where car passengers had also used or were going to use the

national border between Denmark and Germany in connection with their jour-

ney. Most of the returned questionnaires cover journeys inside Denmark be-

    tween Zealand and Funen/Jutland.

    1.5 Enumeration of data

A considerable seasonal variation can be expected, which is why the survey

was divided into a spring survey (May-June) and a summer survey (July-

    August).

Each survey consists of data from one weekday and either a Saturday or a Sun-

day. The method is to enumerate into daily levels of traffic (number of cars and

number of passengers), and then enumerate into first the weekly level and sub-

sequently into the monthly level of traffic.

Finally the surveys will be enumerated into an annual level of traffic.

The enumeration of data has not been carried out yet.

    2 Preliminary results

As mentioned the enumeration of data has not been carried out yet. The results

are therefore presented as the number of questionnaires returned. More than

one ferry company operate on some of the connections, but the presentation of

the results shows the sum of the questionnaires collected from the ferry compa-

    nies on the connection.

    2.1 Type of car

The car passengers were asked to fill in the type of car they were driving. Table

2.1 shows that the majority of the car passengers drives a standard car.

Evaluating the durations of the journeys, it must be kept in mind that the survey

was carried out in the spring and the summer. The summer period traditionally

has many travellers going on holiday, resulting in longer journey duration times.

Bus passengers were not asked about frequency, due to the different way of

    collecting information about bus passengers.

    2.4 Purpose

The passengers were asked to fill in the purpose of the journey. They were al-

lowed to mark more than one of the possible suggested purposes. Table 2.11-

Table 2.15 show the results. The option of choosing more than one purpose has

not been balanced, which is why the total is above 100 per cent.

The results indicate a mixed picture of the purpose, depending on the ferry line.

The majority of the passengers travelling to Swinoujscie have as their purpose

either work/business trips or visiting family or friends. On Rdby-Puttgarden, a

large part of the passengers have shopping or the Bordershop as their purpose.

Since there is a bordershop in Puttgarden by the ferry, there is nothing surpris-

ing in that, but it is notable that it is most significant for the disembarkation

    passengers.

    2.5 Origin and destination

To illustrate the origin and destination of the trips a number of maps have been

produced, showing the total origin and destination of the survey and the area

each ferry line serves. The map showing the total origin and destination of the

survey shows all types of passengers. The maps showing each ferry line are di-

vided into the types of passengers for each ferry line. The spring and summer

surveys are not shown individually, so the maps show the total number of re-

turned questionnaire for each ferry line.

The zone system has been divided into a northern and a southern part as regards

Femern Belt. The maps do not distinguish between origin and destination. All

origins and destinations in the northern part of Femern Belt are shown in blue,

and all origins and destinations in the southern part of Femern Belt are shown

in green. The darker the zone is, the more trips take their origin or destination

in that specific zone. The value of the zones refers to the percentage of trips

made from or to the specific zone.
