We provide impartial, expert advice and services dealing with mergers and acquisitions, capital raising and optimisation, debt and equity restructuring, structured finance and succession planning (corporate and personal). We solve our clients’ complex business problems, and devise strategies to help them succeed.
Investment Management
Our Investment Management business is often a natural extension of relationships we have with Corporate Finance and Merchant Banking clients. We offer objective advice and active investment management to wealthy individuals and families. We take a holistic view of our clients’ wealth, never a simplistic snapshot of a portfolio. Our investment management is global in reach, and all research and investment decisions are done in house.
Merchant Banking
Our Merchant Banking business deploys the firm’s capital alongside that of our trusted partners in investment opportunities. Investment opportunities often come from long-term clients that require additional capital for business development and expansion. Additionally opportunities outside of our existing client network are also assessed for investment suitability. We like to invest with entrepreneurs, helping them to develop their businesses and achieve success.
Bespoke funding can be provided when a creative short term lending solution is required, be that for M&A (MBO or MBI), working capital, bridging a specific event, restructuring or when long term funding is delayed. We will also underwrite deals, offer letters of credit and guarantees.
Our Merchant Banking business manages selected investors’ funds through Mackinnon Investment Limited, which is an investment vehicle offering investors attractive long-term, risk adjusted capital growth.

Cowes Golf Club opened 1909 and for more
than a century has been a source of pleasure
and pride to countless golfers. Set in the
magnificent natural terrain, Cowes provides a
delightful yet challenging golfing environment for
both members and visitors alike.
If you are looking for the perfect location to play
a round of golf, have a great society golf day, or
simply become a member of a popular golf club
– then look no further than Cowes.
The 9-hole layout measures 2,964 yards with a
par of 35. The rolling parkland has an excellent
reputation both for its condition and layout,
while there is something to interest golfers at
all levels, with each hole offering its own unique
challenge.
Although nine hole, the course with alternate
tees presents a challenging 18 hole test which
many golfers have underestimated at their
peril. Even though it is on the edge of Cowes
and surrounded by houses and a High School,
the course is an oasis of peace and quiet,
occasionally interrupted by the antics of red
squirrels and a variety of other wild life, from
pheasants to foxes and the occasional hawk.
If you are visiting the Isle of Wight, this is the
course that you must play or forever regret.
Often busy with members playing, a call to the
Secretary is recommended and if there is a
tee time available, you can be sure of a warm
welcome at Cowes Golf Club.

HISTORY
Founded in 1909, Cowes Golf Club was
designed by famous golf course architect,
Hamilton Stutt, and was formally part of the
Ward Estate.
On Thursday 22nd July 1909 Cowes GC
was opened on the picturesque grounds of
Northwood-park.
The first clubhouse was constructed on July
31st, costing only £500 to build and furnish,
with money to spare to improve the course and
upgrade the course maintenance equipment.
In June 1911 the Cowes professional, Percy J
Lockyer, played in a challenge match against
Osborne professional, Stanley S Jacobs, with
Lockyer winning the match and, in the process,
setting a course record of 71.
The clubhouse was extended in 1923 before a
period of course developments began. While
some were to make general improvements to
the course, others were merely to preserve it.
Building developments to Baring Road in
the 1930s meant a number of greens were
relocated, while bombs were dropped on the
course during World War II, which prompted
redevelopments to the 1st and 9th greens
among others.
Following the war, golf clubs across the Isle of
Wight struggled to regain their members and the
lack of players in the late 1940s and early ‘50s
caused Cowes and several other clubs to run
into severe financial problems.
After recovering from the post-war problems,
the original clubhouse suffered a fire that
seriously damaged most of the building in 1963,
prompting the building of a new clubhouse in
October the same year.
www.cowesgolfclub.co.uk | 7
Several different course arrangements were
tried between 1968-1972 but all were deemed
to have unacceptable flaws. It was back to the
drawing board and at a General Meeting it was
decided that the design of the course should
not be made by well-meaning members but by
an outside professional.
The upshot was that J Hamilton Stutt was
approached to design the course; a job he
willingly accepted.
While the course had undergone a number of
changes throughout the 1960s and 70s, even
more modifications were due when disaster
struck again, as another fire caused the
clubhouse to burn down. In 1983, thanks to the
help of members, staff and financial assistance
from outside bodies, our third clubhouse was
opened two and a half years after the fire.
Despite the recurring tragedy, one positive to
rise out of the fires was the club logo. The image
depicts a double-headed Phoenix emerging out
of fire, symbolically representing the club’s rise
from our clubhouse fires.
The club celebrated its centenary in 2009 and
after experiencing our fair share of misfortune
throughout the past 100 years, we are now well
versed in dealing with adversity.
Unlike some clubs, Cowes Golf Club has
not only survived but also celebrated its
centenary in a robust condition. It has a healthy
membership of both sexes, a beautiful golf
course, well maintained by our Green Keeper as
well as an impressive modern clubhouse with
picturesque views across the Isle of Wight.

ABOUT THE COURSE
Our nine-hole course, with a good selection
of holes, is a 2,964-yard, par 35 course that
provides a real challenge to golfers of all
abilities.
It was designed by Hamilton Stutt, a local golf
course architect, famous for designing exciting
courses across the world that make the most of
the natural terrain. Re-designed in the 1970’s,
the course has matured amazingly well. The
course benefits from indigenous woodland
across its entirety.
The view from the course at Cowes can be
breathtaking with stunning vistas on a late
summers evening, looking across the Solent,
making you feel as though you could be
anywhere in the world.
The layout of the holes uses the natural
topography and the course blends well into
the surroundings rather than imposing upon
it. Over 10 years have passed since a tree
planting programme was implemented. These
plantations are maturing fantastically and are
readily producing a superb test of strategic
parkland playability.
www.cowesgolfclub.co.uk | 9
The course’s signature hole is the par four, 340-
yard hole 9. This hole requires a drive coming
up short and right on this left to right dogleg,
leaving you with a daunting second shot over
some dominating trees. Play it down the left of
the fairway from the tee and the largest green
on the course will open up to you.
Emphasis on the course quality is top of the list,
with consistent, smooth surfaces paramount.
This is achieved by carefully planned nutritional
and aerification programmes which are
implemented throughout the calendar year.
Emphasis is also placed upon the environment
and its’ enhancement. Woodland, habitat
management and the use of as little chemical
products as possible all contribute to the
wellbeing of the local wildlife. You’ll enjoy playing
this course, but the challenges facing you will
vary dependant upon your own standard of golf,
so treat it with respect on your first few visits to
ensure that you negotiate its potential pitfalls.

If you have never played at Cowes Golf Club
before you are in for a treat. Make the most of
your trip by learning about some of the pitfalls
that lie in wait and how to avoid them as you
follow our hole-by-hole tour.
Hole 1, 551 yards, par 5
An excellent hole for starters. Bunkers and trees
to the left, out of bounds down the right and a
small green for a par five means that you need
to play it straight and keep it safe to avoid any
misfortune on this hole.
Hole 2, 355 yards, par 4
A good tee shot hugging the tree line along the
left side of the fairway should ensure less of a
natural roll off to the right on the sloping fairway.
This will leave you with a shorter second shot
into a long narrow green. Hit it right or left at this
point and you’ll find trouble.
Hole 3, 172 yards, par 3
A favourite hole for many golfers. This
picturesque par three requires accuracy from
the tee to avoid a newly re-modelled pot bunker
on the right. There’s no harm in over clubbing
here.

Hole 4, 414 yards, par 4
Another hole where the importance of the tee
shot is paramount. Keep it left of centre from the
tee. This will ensure a shorter second to a flat
green on this tricky, right to left dogleg par four.
Hole 5, 317 yards, par 4
A medium to long iron from the tee is all that is
required on this short par four. This will leave a
full shot into the green. Be careful not to under
hit your second shot as you could get caught
out by the water hazard. Tug it left and the
dominant oak could also have a part to play.
Hole 6, 346 yards, par 4
A tight driving hole preferably played with a
draw. This time it’s flat terrain all the way to
50 yards from the green where some gentle
undulations start. The two tier green must be
judged with caution as many a shot has been
dropped here.

Hole 7, 309 yards, par 4
A long, straight drive will be rewarded by a
short pitch to a green which is well guarded by
bunkers. Beware of the fairway bunkers down
the right and left.
Hole 8, 160 yards, par 3
On this par three, as opposed to hole three, you
would be better off coming up short rather than
being long. A large bunker guards the whole left
side of the green and two smaller ones protect
the right. With out of bounds across the back,
it’s a tough and demanding tee shot.
Hole 9, 340 yards, par 4
A drive coming up short and right on this left
to right dogleg will leave you with a daunting
second shot over some dominating trees. Play it
down the left of the fairway from the tee and the

MEMBERS’ GOLF
Members at Cowes Golf Club enjoy a full
programme of golf throughout the year. There
are fixtures against other clubs, together with
much competition to be enjoyed alongside
fellow members, some for silverware and some
of a more social nature.
There is always something to suit your handicap,
age and golfing desire at Cowes Golf Club
and you will certainly not be short of playing
opportunities.
Men
The men’s section at Cowes Golf Club is strong
on competitive golf both within the club and with
other golf clubs and leagues.
The men field a team in the Isle of Wight
Foursomes League. This is a scratch Foursomes
competition that sees matches played over 18
holes, with each match consisting of three games.
This is a competition we have faired well in over
the past two decades, winning five consecutive
titles from 1992-96 and again from 1999-2003.
The men field a team in an Isle of Wight
competition called the Haworth Cup, however,
their main focus is in the Isle of Wight Inter-Club
League in which they finished runners up last
year.
The men’s side also play a number of friendlies
throughout the season against other local
clubs, while there is also a keen focus on social
golf where the only thing on offer is renewing
friendships and perhaps a drink in the bar
afterwards for the winner.

VISITORS
At Cowes Golf Club we extend a warm welcome
to visitors, with both our green fees and society
packages representing fantastic value for
money.
Visitors are welcome to play the course at any
time throughout the week and are invited to use
the Club’s other outstanding facilities during
their visit. You do not have to be a golfer to be
able to spend an enjoyable time with us.
You will find the course provides an interesting
challenge for golfers of all abilities, with stunning
views across the countryside adding to the
elegance of the course.
The well-stocked Accessories Stand will allow
you to stock up on consumables and to browse
the wide range of golf equipment, while a full
range of catering facilities is also available in the
Clubhouse where you can relax with companions
and enjoy the view overlooking the downs.
Although handicap certificates are not
mandatory, we do prefer golfers to be of a
sufficient standard for them to be able to enjoy
their round and for them not to inconvenience
other players when out on the course.
Please take a moment to visit our website and
read our rules on dress regulations to ensure
your visit runs as smoothly as possible. A
minimum standard of smart casual dress is
required in all areas of the Clubhouse at all times.

SOCIETIES
Societies and corporate groups are always
welcome at Cowes Golf Club and can expect an
enjoyable day out. We are a popular venue all year
round and see groups returning year after year.
We can cater for small or large groups and offer
a wide range of golf packages from 18, 28 or 36
holes of golf.
Choose from an individually priced menu
containing a number of choices depending on
the time of day you wish to play.
We have a range of catering options available
starting with coffee and a bacon roll on arrival
before a round of 18.
We would recommend, however, choosing the all-
day package, which includes coffee and a bacon
roll on arrival, followed by a round of golf, before a
three-course lunch with coffee to follow.
Longest drive and nearest the pin markers can be
provided and our well-stocked Accessories Stand
has everything you need for prizes, while our
office, Clubhouse and staff are on hand to assist
you to ensure that your outing runs smoothly and
that everyone has a memorable day.
Prices are very reasonable and highly competitive
and we guarantee you and your group a day to
remember.
We are meticulous over detail and deliver the
complete package that consistently exceeds
the expectations of visitors or guests. For more
