ROUNDROUND--UPUP
VISION STATEMENT:
Be a world renowned destination that
brings alive the heritage of the American
West to inspire present and future generations.
MISSION STATEMENT:
To celebrate and perpetuate the history, art
and culture of the Chisholm Trail, the
American Cowboy and the American West.
The Chisholm Trail Heritage Center, located in Duncan, Oklahoma is a multi
sensory submersion into not only the fascinating historic Chisholm Trail, but also
settlement of the southern Great Plains of the United States. Not your typical “stop
and stare,” our exhibits encourage you to explore, push buttons, pick up a lasso, or
put on a cowboy hat. Animatronic Jesse Chisholm tells the story of the trail in our
campfire theater. The earth literally shakes to the real life rumble of a stampede in
our experience theater. The Garis Gallery of the American West houses many
highest quality western artists such as Remington, Russell, and Jaxon.
The Chisholm Trail Heritage Association is a 501c3 non-profit. Your contributions to our
programs and exhibits are tax deductable. Consider the Center in your estate and planned giving
allocations. [email protected] or (580) 252-6692
We are OPEN every day! Sundays 1pm-5pm and Monday through Saturday 10pm – 5pm.

Christmas on the Trail Educational Programming
November 7—December 16
How did the settlers on the Chisholm Trail celebrate Christmas in
the Territories? What was it like in their dugout homes? Could a
young bride cause a stampede? Could Santa find them? What
would he bring a pioneer child?
Meet Molly Bugbee (aka educator Kim Goddard). Molly is a
young bride on her first cattle drive to Colorado. In her first hand
account, students find out what to do and not do on a long journey
with 750 longhorn cattle. Molly made some mistakes,
had some fun, and started the
adventure of her life.

Garis Gallery of the American West Artist Spotlight on
Bob Shriver
“Layin’ the Trap” at the Chisholm
Trail Heritage Center is in the Garis
Gallery of the American West. It is a
20” high, 52” long, 23” wide bronze
done in 1968 as part of the Rodeo
Series and is in the book An Honest
Try. “In order to minimize the
overall length of the piece, both the
steer and the header were set at
slightly opposing angles. The leads
and the gaits of all three subjects –
heeler, steer and header – were
carefully considered so that they
would logically be traveling at the
correct speed.” He also wrote “It is an
event that has its roots in actual
practice on the open range when two
cowboys had occasion to handle an
ornery range longhorn.”
When Jim Garis purchased “Layin’ the Trap” he became the only person in existence to have the sculpture and the book which features the sculpture, An Honest Try, both with inscriptions to or by photographer Aspger
Mikkelsen.

crosses she is caring for her many beautiful Canaries

Finches she raises.
Tarranda and her

Trail Dance Film Festival 101
What is a Film Festival?
A film festival is an event that showcases films that were made independently—meaning most did not have big budgets or Hollywood production companies supporting the project.
These are films made because the filmmaker is passionate about the subject matter and has put his or her own blood, sweat and finances behind the project.
What kind of films might I see?
All kinds. The shortest film this year is about two minutes and the longest are nearly two hours. There are several films based on Christian teachings, some cartoons, documentaries, many westerns, a few scary movies, some comedies, even a few musicals.
How do I know what to watch?
Pick up a film catalog at the CTHC or Simmons Center or go online at www.traildancefilmfestival.com. The guide has all the films, their show times, a little about the plot, and a recommended rating — R, PG-13, PG, or G.
