Cover Photo: G-VSPY, a Boeing 787-9 with Virgin Atlantic (VAWF) is seen on final approach to London Heathrow on December 1, 2017. This frame, one of 15 789s in the fleet, is named Miss Moneypenny.

Air New Zealand (ANZF) will begin 3x weekly service from Auckland (AKL) to Chicago O’Hare (ORD) on November 30. This route will be

operated by 275-seat Boeing 787-9 equipment. 1

American Airlines (AALA) announced a slew of new routes to Mexico, the Caribbean, and Latin America, with flights set to begin

from December. Flights from Los Angeles (LAX) to Buenos Aires (EZE) will begin on December 19 using Boeing 787-9 equipment. Flights from Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) to Oaxaca, Mexico (OAX) will also start on December 19, and be flown by Envoy Air (SIMA) Embraer E175s operating under the American Eagle banner. December 20 will see the commencement of service from Miami (MIA) to Georgetown, Guyana (GEO) and Pereira, Colombia (PEI), both of which will be flown by Airbus A319 equipment. Finally, Boeing 767-300/ER flights from Miami to Cordoba, Argentina (COR) will start on April 2, 2019. You have a bit of time to book that one. 2

Bahamasair (BHLF) has delayed the launch of its new 4x weekly Bimini (BIM) to Miami service from April 1 to May 2. The route

will still be served by ATR42 equipment once it begins. 3

Interjet (23IF) will begin daily service from Leon (BJX) to San Antonio (SAT) on June 22. This flight will be operated by 93-seat Sukhoi SSJ-100

equipment. 4

Austrian Airlines (AUXF) will operate a one-off one-way flight from New York Kennedy (JFK) to Salzburg (SZG) and on to Vienna

(VIE) on May 31. This private charter flight will be operated by Boeing 767-300/ER equipment. 5

American Airlines will end service from Miami to Belo Horizonte, Brazil (CNF) on August 21. 6

AVIATION UPDATE | NO. 139 MARCH 30, 2018

3

Attached to the end of this edition of the Aviation Update, you’ll find a four-page extra which shows how much money has been left at airports in the U.S from FY 2012-2017.

Ireland’s Ryanair will acquire a 75% stake in Austrian carrier Laudamotion for $62 million. Laudamotion, owned by former

race car driver Niki Lauda, will begin services in Europe later this year, using assets from the now defunct Niki airline, owned by… Niki Lauda. 11

The Indian government will sell a 76% stake of flag-carrier Air India (AINF), along with a 100% stake in Air India Express and a

50% stake in ground handler Air India Airport Services. Potential buyers will take into account that they will then be responsible for anywhere from $5-8 billion in total debt. Previous attempts by the government to offload Air India have been unsuccessful. 12

Air India Fl. 139 from Delhi (DEL) to Tel Aviv (TLV) became the first commercial flight to transit Saudi Arabian airspace en route to Israel in 70 years on March 22.

Israeli flag carrier El Al (EILF) is still not allowed to fly through Saudi airspace, and has since filed suit against the Israeli government

and Israel’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). El Al contends that since they are not allowed through Saudi airspace that the Israeli government should not allow Air India to do so, as it cuts two hours off the flight time and allows Air India to sell tickets at a lower price. 13

Let’s take a quick look at passenger traffic in Southern California for January: Los Angeles started 2018 strong, with 6,687,107 passengers, nearly a quarter of a million more than January 2017. 375,000 passengers traveled from Ontario (ONT), 817,000 from Santa Ana (SNA) and 321,000 from Long Beach (LGB). Rounding out the Southland,

slightly over 370,000 passengers flew from Burbank (BUR) in January, a 13.2% year-on-year increase. The airport earned $1.5 million in revenues from parking during the month and another $207,000 from Uber/Lyft fees. 14

Indonesia’s Lion Air took delivery of the first Boeing 737 MAX 9 frame to be delivered to any airline by Boeing on March

21. 15

Xiamen Air (88MF), a subsidiary of China Southern (C4XF), has ordered 20 Boeing 737 MAX 8 and 10 737 MAX 10 aircraft. The

order is worth $3.24 billion at list prices. 16

China Southern Airlines earned a record profit of $941 million in 2017, a 17% increase over the previous year. 17

Great Lakes Aviation (GLBA) suspended scheduled flight operations on March 26. 18 The airline is looking to sell all remaining assets to “interested parties.”

A Great Lakes Beech 1900D (N245GL) arriving at Los Angeles in November 2015.

XTRA Airways (BJNA) has been placed for sale by its ownership. XTRA recently sold seven of the eight Boeing 737 it owned to

Swift Air (I5EA), leaving just one aircraft on the XTRA Air Operator’s Certificate (AOC). However, buyers

may be interested in that AOC as XTRA has scheduled service authority, is certified to fly in Europe and is authorized to fly between the U.S. and China. 19

Over 667,000 passengers flew from San Antonio (SAT) in February, a new monthly record for the airport and a 10.5% year-on-year increase. 20

Singapore Airlines (SBOF) took delivery of the first Boeing 787-10 frame (9V-SCA) delivered to any carrier on March 25. 21

A woman who was bumped off a United Airlines (CALA) flight from Washington Dulles (IAD) to Austin (AUS) received a $10,000 travel

voucher for her troubles. 22

Vietnamese start-up Bamboo Airways has inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Airbus for 24 Airbus A321neo aircraft. An MOU is typically a prelude to a firm order; Bamboo Airways is set to commence operations next year. 23

Qantas (QLMF) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Alan Joyce mused recently about possibly adding sleeper berths in unused cargo

holds of aircraft on ultra-long haul flights in the future. 24

Here is an interesting story detailing the unique way Delta Air Lines (DALA) has integrated the Boeing 717

(MD-95 to the aviation aficionados) into the fleet. One interesting nugget: Delta got Southwest, which inherited the 80+ fleet of 717s from AirTran after the takeover of the carrier, to pay for the repainting and refurbishment of the interiors.

4,927,284 passengers took flights to/from Dallas/Fort Worth in February, a 4.1% year-on-year increase. 25 Across town, Dallas Love Field (DAL) saw 1,161,549 passengers, a 3.55% year-on-year uptick. 26

UPDATE: China’s Hainan Airlines Holdings, owner of Hainan Airlines (3HAF), has paid off its overdue fuel bill of $474.5 million to China’s

state-run aviation fuel provider. 27

Air Seychelles will cut 174 employees, including 100 cabin crew, as part of a restructuring plan, nearly 25% of the airline’s

work force. Air Seychelles will end its last long-haul service at the end of April 28 and focus on domestic and regional flights. 28

Skytrax released its Top 100 World Airport rankings, and Singapore Changi (SIN) takes the top spot for an unprecedented sixth straight year. Denver was the highest ranked U.S. airport at No. 29. The Top 10: 29

1. Singapore 2. Seoul Incheon 3. Tokyo Haneda 4. Hong Kong 5. Doha Hamad 6. Munich 7. Nagoya 8. London Heathrow 9. Zurich 10. Frankfurt

2.2 million metric tons of cargo moved through Frankfurt (FRA) in 2017, a 3.8% year-on-year increase. 30

Air freight rates averaged $2.84 per kilogram (2.2 lbs) in February, a 14.2% year-on-year increase. Increased demand and more limited capacity have helped raise air freight prices. 31

A Germania Boeing 737-76J (D-ABLB) preparing to depart on a flight was pushed back directly into an El Al Boeing 767-3Q8/ER

(4X-EAK) at Tel Aviv (TLV) on March 28, causing substantial damage to both aircraft. 32 No word on if the wing-walker was blindfolded at the time. Here is another photo showing the extensive damage to the Germania tail.

The tails of Qatar Airways (QYCF) feature the Arabian oryx, the national animal of Qatar. The Arabian oryx is a medium-sized

antelope that became extinct in the wild in the 1970s; captive breeding programs kept the animal alive and it was reintroduced into the wild in 1980. Today there are over 1,000 oryx in the wild.

CC-BBG, a Boeing 787-8 with LATAM (LANF), was withdrawn from use (wfu) and ferried on March 18 to Victorville, California

(VCV) for storage.

LV-CSF, an Airbus A340-313 with Aerolineas Argentinas (AISF), was wfu and ferried on March 21 to San Bernardino, California

(SBD) for part-out and scrap.

N923DL, a McDonnell Douglas MD-88 with Delta Air Lines (DALA), was wfu and ferried on March 22 to San Bernardino for part-out and scrap.

N961DN, a McDonnell Douglas MD-90-30 with Delta, was wfu and ferried on March 23 to San Bernardino for part-out and scrap.

N919DL, a McDonnell Douglas MD-88 with Delta, was wfu and ferried on March 25 to San Bernardino for part-out and scrap. This frame had 76,619 hours and 58,119 cycles as of February 12.
