H ydrangeas have enjoyed a renaaissance in recentyears as more garden-owners realise their fullpotential. Not only do hydrangeas grow well in a

sunny spot or dappled shade, they also produce largecolourful flowers from June to October. So, where will

a hydrangea work best inyour garden?

The new compactvarieties grow beautifullyin large patio pots,while more traditionalhydrangeas – includingpopular varieties like‘Runaway Bride’ and‘Polestar’ – can be plantedin a mixed shrub border, anaturalistic ‘wild’ garden,or among trees at thewoodland’s edge. Theyeven look fantastic as aninformal flowering hedge.

Hydrangeas tend tocome in variations of blue,white or pink, and theirlarge textured leavescontrast well with othershade-loving plants –including ferns, heucherasand hellebores. Oppositeare nine versatilehydrangeas for patio potsand borders, but you’llalso find other beautifulalternatives in store.
