The Anniversary of D-DayOn June 6, 1944, more than

150,000 Allied troops stormed thebeaches of Normandy, France, inthe largest amphibious militaryoperation in history. This yearmarks the 75th anniversary of thehistoric World War II invasionknown as D-Day.

Under the command ofU.S. Army General Dwight D.Eisenhower, the Allied attackcame after two years of planningand preparation to overtakeGerman forces and liberateWestern Europe. A 50-mile stretchof coastline in northern Francewas chosen as the landing siteand divided into five beaches,code-named Utah, Omaha, Gold,Juno and Sword.

More than 13,000 airplanesand 5,000 ships and landing craftcarrying American, British andCanadian soldiers departedEngland, crossed the EnglishChannel and invaded Normandyby sea and air in the early hours ofJune 6. By day’s end, it’s estimatedthat 10,000 Allied troops werekilled or wounded.

After gaining a foothold alongthe coast, the Allies advanced intoFrance and eastward to Germany.D-Day is often considered thebeginning of the end of the war.
