The PNC is off to a great start in our search and discernment for our new

Pastor. The committee will be meeting every Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. until we

feel we are well on our way in the process.

Should you have any questions, concerns or comments, please feel free to

reach out to anyone on the committee. We will also have a dedicated email address that we will publish

once it is set up. Thank you to those from the congregation who have already provided some input and

guidance. Please know we will be considering all members of the congregation when we make this very

important decision.

Fun at CROSS Ministries Trivia Night

On Saturday, February 11 a group of Covenant members headed to CROSS Ministries Trivia Night. The fundraiser – both trivia and a silent auction – has become an annual event, raising money to benefit those who CROSS serves. Last year, CROSS Ministries provided approximately 21,000 acts of giving and service to low income and no-income people.

Covenant Book Club

The Book Club Meets on Thursday, March 2 at 5:30 p.m. in the conference room. The book for March is At the Water’s Edge: A Novel by Sara Gruen From Amazon: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER: In this thrilling new novel from the author of Water for Elephants, Sara Gruen again demonstrates her talent for creating spellbinding period pieces. At the Water’s Edge is a gripping and poignant love story about a privileged young woman’s awakening as she experiences the devastation of World War II in a tiny village in the Scottish Highlands.”

The book for April is At the Edge of the Orchard by Tracy Chevalier. From goodreads.com: 1838: James and Sadie Goodenough have settled where their wagon got stuck – in the muddy, stagnant swamps of northwest Ohio. They and their five children work relentlessly to tame their patch of land, buying saplings from a local tree man known as John Appleseed so they can cultivate the fifty apple trees required to stake their claim on the property. But the orchard they plant sows the seeds of a long battle. James loves the apples, reminders of an easier life back in Connecticut; while Sadie prefers the applejack they make, an alcoholic refuge from brutal frontier life. 1853: Their youngest child Robert is wandering through Gold Rush California. Restless and haunted by the broken family he left behind, he has made his way alone across the country. In the redwood and giant sequoia groves he finds some solace, collecting seeds for a naturalist who sells plants from the new world to the gardeners of England. But you can run only so far, even in America, and when Robert’s past makes an unexpected appearance he must decide whether to strike out again or stake his own claim to a home at last. Chevalier tells a fierce, beautifully crafted story in At the Edge of the Orchard, her most graceful and richly imagined work yet.

Ladies Who Lunch – Monday, March 27 @ 11:30 a.m. Sign-up for the lunch in the north hallway and keep a look out for the restaurant announcement. Last month, LWL met at Star Bar on Ingersoll and were joined by a few women who work in the area, with approximately 15 attending. Hope to see you there!

Palm Sunday / Children’s Palm Processional All children are invited to participate in a palm processional on Palm Sunday, April 8th. We will gather in the fellowship hall prior to the start of worship and enter the sanctuary together during the introit, waving palms as we walk in (parents are welcome to walk with smaller children). Palms will be placed in a basket by the communion table and children can then sit with their families.

Covenant’s Children’s Bell Choir All children preK-5th grade are invited to join!

Rehearsals will be on Wednesday nights for three weeks, from 6:15 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the sanctuary.

Age appropriate music will be taught, however it is important that any child joining the bell choir

commits to attending most rehearsals. Rehearsal dates are March 22, March 29, April 5, April 19,

April 26, May 3, May 10 and May 17. The performance will be May 21 during worship. Questions? Email

Online registration will open after Easter. VBS Sunday will be June 18th, Father’s Day. Watch for more details to come. YOU CAN HELP / LARGE boxes are needed for Vacation Bible School!

We need all the large boxes we can get (the size that would be large enough for a child to crawl

through). This year’s VBS has a cave theme and we want to make our very own cave tunnel to play in.

The bigger the tunnel, the more fun it will be! Please help us find boxes! We are willing to pick up if

needed, otherwise drop them by the church office or set them in the hallway by the Christian Education

office door. Thank you!

MISSION IN ACTION

Want to know more about the diaper ministry? See

“Covenant’s Diaper Mission Calling for Volunteers!”

on page 8 of the February 2017 Covenant Key. Learn

how the dedicated efforts of the group benefit the

Haiti Cloth Diaper Project based in Rochester, MN.

BY THE NUMBERS

- 5.3 million children under 3 in the U.S. live in poor or

low-income families.

- Government programs? None. Food stamps do not cover

diapers.

- Diaper assistance is provided by diaper banks, food

banks, social service agencies and community and faith-

based groups.

- Without diapers, babies cannot participate in early

childhood education programs.

- Without childcare, parents cannot go to work.

Douglas M. Woods Challenge Hunger Campaign

March 1 through April 30

Since 2013, the Douglas M. Woods Challenge Hunger Campaign has been matching gifts to the DMARC

Food Pantry Network 50 cents to the dollar, thanks to benefactor and retired West Des Moines police

officer Doug Woods.

Now in its fifth year, the Douglas M. Woods Challenge Hunger Campaign offers $10,000 of matching

funds and has raised over $200,000 to date for DMARC. From March 1 through April 30, donations to

DMARC that are noted as “Challenge Hunger” gifts will be matched 50 cents for every dollar, up to a

total of $20,000 given. Your $10 becomes $15; $50 equals $75; and so on. This challenge comes during a

season when donations to the food pantries are historically low. Yet, the need for food assistance

continues. During the Challenge, a $10 gift will help DMARC provide 20 meals. This March and April,

your gift has extra impact.

March Coins for Concern: Orchard Place

Orchard Place's mission is to develop strong futures for children and youth with mental health and behavioral challenges. See www.orchardplace.org.

Sudanese Refugee Assistance

It is WINTER. She came wearing sandals. She needs boots. It is COLD. He has only a sweatshirt. He needs a coat. They LEFT EVERYTHING BEHIND. They are strangers in a strange land. They need help. They need hope.

We ask for your help by making a monetary donation or providing a gift card to places like Wal-Mart, Target, Hy-Vee, Price Chopper, etc.

DONATE online at dmpresbytery.org, or send gift cards or checks (payable to Presbytery of Des Moines with Sudanese Mission on the mission line) to the Presbytery of Des Moines, 2400 86th Street, Suite 20, Urbandale, IA 50322.

“Suppose there are brothers or sisters who need clothes and don’t have enough to eat. What good is there in your saying to them, ‘God bless you! Could It Be You?

The next San Isidro partnership delegation trip: July 4-11, 2017

Covenant's 7th delegation trip will continue to build on our six previous

six men, women and young adults to meet with the village Directiva

(elected council), 14 scholarship students, local school board, women's

project group and the area medical clinic student doctor. Delegates will

visit with each of our 59 families to deliver our partner family letters and to offer friendship and careful,

prayerful listening support.

Please share your questions, responses, thoughts and prayers about your possible support and/or

involvement with Warren Pitcher and Marilynn Johnson.

one. We get to build a relationship with our partner families and if you decide to go on a

delegation in the future, you will be a star!

Letters for Covenant Partner Families in San Isidro We need a card/letter for your

partner family by Sunday, MAY 14. This date has changed since the February Key which

asked for a letter in June. Our apologies for the change. Please note the new date.

We cannot send gifts. A letter, card or photo is all we can send. If you would like to send a photo, we can

take one of you in our sanctuary or in Fellowship Hall. See Deb Kellogg or Marilee Myers for help in

taking a picture.

Please be prompt and get it to us by Sunday, May 14th, 2017.

We need to have our letters translated before they are given to our families.

Do not use Google Translate. It does not translate correctly and is very difficult for our families to read.

If you are able to write in Spanish or have a friend or relative that can translate your letter it would be very helpful.

Do I have a partner family? If your name is in the

following list, yes you do.

If your name is not listed below and you would like

Presbyterian Mission Agency: We Choose Welcome

When we welcome refugees, we welcome the refugee Jesus. Warned in a dream, Joseph and Mary took

the infant Jesus to Egypt to keep him safe from Herod. At that moment, he and his parents became

refugees.

Our recent observance of Holocaust Remembrance Day reminds us that our nation’s record of welcome

is far from perfect. Jewish refugees fleeing persecution were turned away from our shore during that

time. On countless occasions since, however, our nation has provided succor for those fleeing

persecution, war, and violence.

As this is being written, our nation, and we as Presbyterians, face another moment of decision. Will we

welcome refugees in Jesus’ name or will we go along with policies that would turn away those unable to

remain in their homes and forced to seek safety and security in other nations, including our own?

This past week, the President signed an executive order that would halt refugee resettlement and would

bar refugees from certain (mostly Muslim majority) countries entering the United States. Church World

Service reports that the order suspends the US Refugee Admissions Program (USRAP) for 120 days for all

populations, indefinitely bars Syrian refugees from resettlement in the United States and does not allow

entry into the country of nationals from Iraq, Iran, Libya, Syria, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen (this includes

refugees and people with Special Immigrant Visas) for the next 90 days. The premise is that this will

protect us from terrorists.

Presbyterians, along with people of other faiths and people of good will, have

responded that we will not give in to fear and we will follow the call of Jesus to

welcome. In a January 28, 2017 statement, the Rev. Dr. J. Herbert Nelson II, Stated

Clerk of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) said “We stand

ready to welcome our new neighbors, friends, and family of all faiths and nations.” …

Resources[are found at www.presbyterianmission.org] to support Presbyterians who

seek to practice welcome in Jesus’ name.

I have been going through some pretty major changes in my life

over the past couple of years. I have heard it said that the

alternative to change is death. There seems to be a guarantee in

life that change will happen. Change is something we tend to fear

or become anxious about because we cannot control it.

My friend told me the other day that the things we cannot

change, change us. Maybe that’s called growing. Personally, I think it is difficult and painful. Supposedly,

God does not give us more of a load than we can handle. Sometimes, I wonder. Yet, in faith, I believe

that God has a plan for me, for all of us. He wants us to be happy and prosper. If we trust Him and allow

changes to grow us to become more like Jesus in how we respond and act, then we are promised that

things will work out for those who love him and keep his commandments. I try to calm down and

remember Philippians 4:6-7, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and

petition, with thanksgiving present your request to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all

understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Hang in there.
