Coved becomes the first environmental services company to
calculate its own Local Footprint® for all of France Consultancy Utopies has used its Local Footprint® model to study the socio-economic footprint of Coved throughout France. This national footprint provides an insight into the overall impacts imposed by Coved's business activities, and is supplemented by thirteen regional footprints highlighting the specific impacts on the regions of France. This is the first time that such a survey has been conducted at national level by an environmental services company. As the waste management subsidiary of the Saur Group, Coved was keen to learn the socio-economic impacts of its business in France. So it commissioned a Local Footprint® survey from consultants Utopies in February this year focusing on the company's overall activity in 2014, and on its thirteen operating regions individually (Bourgogne Champagne Ardenne, Alsace Lorraine Franche-Comté, Rhône-Alpes Auvergne, Sud Est, Béarn Landes, Midi-Pyrénées, Hérault, Estuaire, Centre, Ouest, Normandie, Ile-de-France and Nord). In overall terms, Coved injects €330 million into the national economy, supporting 8,200 full-time equivalent jobs and contributing €500 million to French GDP. In addition to the 2,700 direct jobs it provides, Coved also supports a further 5,500 jobs through its purchases, the salaries it pays and its tax liabilities. In other words, for every direct job, Coved also supports 2 additional jobs in France; a multiplier effect of 3. The survey results also show that for every €1 generated by Coved, an additional €2.50 is generated elsewhere in the French economy; a multiplier effect of 3.5. The survey uses the data gathered to include the indirect socio-economic effects resulting from expenditure with Tier 1 suppliers, and then simulates the knock-on effects of this expenditure through the supplier chain indexed by industry sector and French region. It also estimates the consequential socio-economic effects related to household consumption (made possible by the expenditure of Coved employees and Tier 1-15 suppliers) and public authority expenditure (made possible by the taxes paid by Coved and its Tier 1-15 suppliers). "It's important for Coved to accurately measure the impact of its business activities at regional level. What we buy, the taxes we pay, the employees we pay and the parts of our business we subcontract are all objective indicators of the local presence we see as our most important priority", explains Coved CEO Sylvain Joannon.
