Mary McFarlan Whaley In celebration of Women’s History month, I would like to recognize the contribution of Mary McFarlan Whaley, whose legacy lives on at McFarlan Villages. Mrs. Whaley was a philanthropist who supported her church, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, where she had a chapel built in memory of her mother and four aunts called The Five Sisters Chapel. In honor of her son, Donald, who passed away at the age of ten of diphtheria, Mrs. Whaley donated land and funding to build a children’s home. Furthermore, Mrs. Whaley established a trust to create a home for elderly ladies which included her home and funding to support the residents, and named the home after her parents. Mrs. Whaley passed away in 1925 and McFarlan Home opened its doors in 1926. Holy Week 2018The last week of March is considered

Holy Week by many religious people.Holy Week begins with Palm Sunday, the day that commemorates the arrivalof Jesus in Jerusalem. The Jewish peoplelaid palm branches in front of Jesus’donkey in a display of respectand honor.

Maundy Thursday is thought of as theday where Jesus ate the Last Supperwith his apostles and was the beginningof the common religious practice ofHoly Communion. In practice, manytoday receive communion toremember the sacrifice of Jesus.

Good Friday is traditionallyacknowledged as the day Jesus wascrucified, a Roman method ofexecution carried out on a cross. Hewas convicted of claiming to be kingand was sentenced to death.

Easter Sunday, which falls on April 1stthis year, is the day remembered asResurrection Sunday, the day whenJesus rose from the dead. Many maynot know that according to religioustexts, a woman first discovered theempty tomb and ran to tell everyonewhat she’d found.

Whatever your religious beliefs, Easteris still a good time to spend time withfamily, enjoy some hopefully nice springweather, and maybe eat a jelly beanor two!
