facility overview

Constructed in 1991, the Atkins Tennis Center continues to be recognized as one of the premier tennis facilities in the country on a university campus. The initial project was made possible by a generous contribu-tion from Clint and Susie Atkins and was developed to provide a state of the art training facility for the University of Il-linois varsity tennis teams. In addition, the facility was to be made available to the public and allow members of the community the opportunity to learn and play tennis. Once completed, the Atkins Tennis Center featured six indoor courts, eight lighted outdoor courts, public lock-er and restroom facilities, and a Pro Shop offering tennis equipment and apparel. In 1992, the USTA recognized Atkins as the country’s “Most Outstanding Tennis Facility.”

In April 2009, the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics unveiled the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex which is part of the Atkins Tennis Center. This magnificent project was made possible by Shahid and Ann Khan who are great supporters of Illinois Tennis and the Urbana - Champaign community. The expansion increased Atkins’ number of outdoor courts to twenty, including twelve championship courts that feature individual score-boards and spectator seating. In addition to the courts, the project provided a new en-trance and Pro Shop area as well as additional restrooms on the east side of the existing tennis center. The Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex is the foremost outdoor facility in the

Big Ten Conference and offers world-class amenities to the public. The primary function of the Atkins Tennis Center is to serve as the practice and competition home for the Illinois Fighting Illini women’s and men’s tennis teams. Since its construction, the women’s team has achieved a number of milestones including a program high ranking of 22 in 2004 and a win over top-ranked Duke in 2003. In 2009, Illinois’ women’s team hosted its first NCAA Regional and came within one point of

advancing to the Sweet 16. The Illinois’ men’s team is a fixture at the top of college tennis. The 2003 team captured the NCAA Team, Singles, and Doubles Titles in what has been called “The Perfect Season.” In 2007 the Illini came within one win of their second NCAA Team Championship. In 2010, the Fighting Illini Men took home the Big Ten Tournament Title. Since its opening, numerous collegiate tennis champions have trained and competed at Atkins.

In addition to being the home of Illinois Tennis, the Atkins Tennis Center is open to all members of the Urbana - Champaign community and visitors to the area. Atkins does not charge a membership fee. When the facility is not being used by the varsity teams, tennis players may reserve a court or receive instruction in a private lesson or group clinic. Atkins staff is dedicated to growing the game and offering quality instructional programs and leagues for players of all ages and levels. All information regarding court time at Atkins and the programs offered for the upcoming semester are outlined in this program brochure. If you have any specific questions, please contact Atkins’ front desk at (217) 244-8562.

During the summer months, the center is also host to the Fighting Illini Tennis Camps and Nike Tennis Camps. Adults and juniors from around the country travel to central Illinois to learn from Illinois coaches Evan Clark (Nike) and Brad Dancer (F.I.T.) Campers experience a thorough training regimen that covers stroke technique, match strategy, and conditioning and fitness training. Junior campers receive approximately 35 hours of on-court training over five days while adult campers receive 20 hours of instruction over a weekend. For more in-formation on the Fighting Illini Summer Tennis Camps at the Atkins Tennis Center call(217) 244-7278 or visit www.fightingillini.com/camps.

In 2013 the University of Illinois and the Atkins Tennis Center hosted the 2013 NCAA Division I Women’s and Men’s Tennis Championships. It was the first time a Midwest school has hosted the NCAA Tournament since the women’s and men’s championships were combined in 2005. Atkins also hosts a number of elite junior tournaments and one of the longest running professional tournaments on the USTA Pro Circuit: the JSM Challenger.

Whether you are new to the game and looking to learn, an advanced player looking for competition, or a fan of collegiate sport, Atkins has something to offer everyone. The state of the art facility and expert staff provide a superior experience for players and spectators. The Illinois Tennis family hopes to see you drilling on the court or cheering in the stands at the Atkins Tennis Center soon.
