effort to make voter registration forms available to you. A limited number of voter

registration forms for the State of Illinois are available to students at Wheaton College during

business hours at the Office of the Registrar and at fall term registration.

The Federal Election Commission also provides voter registration information at its website at

Experimental Courses: Spring 2020

AHS 310. Introduction to Public Health. An introduction to the key concepts and considerations in public

health research and practice. Selected public health topics will be presented from biomedical, epidemiologic,

socio-cultural, and policy perspectives in the context of low, middle and high-income countries. (4 cr.)

ANTH 320. Bollywood (Indian Cinema): A Window into Indian Society. This course explores images of Indian

society that emerge though the medium of film. We will learn about gender inequalities, social injustice,

poverty, oppression, violation of human rights, unavailability of basic needs, and inaccessibility to education in

Indian society. Throughout this course, our aim will be to recognize the roots of issues in Indian society and

consider how we as Christians and individuals can respond to them. (4 cr.)

ANTH 430. Ritual & Performance. Ritual, embodied practices, and performance as the specialized and

everyday presentation of the self have been central anthropological topics since the beginning of the discipline.

This course will explore the ways anthropology has theorized ritual and performance as key ways that humans

make sense of the world. Work in the course will include embodied activities and fieldwork on performance and

ritual, in addition to classic and contemporary readings in the study of ritual and performance studies. (2 cr.)

ART 220. Woodblock Printmaking. This course introduces basic woodblock carving and relief printing processes

with two main objectives: 1) woodblock printing lends itself towards intriguing and complex color investigations,

and 2) printmaking has a long history of social and political engagement. This class will deepen student

awareness of global perspectives in printmaking. This course has a $120 course fee. (3 cr.)

ART 240. Sophomore Cornerstone. A discussion of art, artists, theological views of artistry and art theory, in

relationship of the Christian person and culture. We explore how different attitudes, theories, and methods can

shape the form and direction of artistic work and help to shape culture. Each student is encouraged to evaluate

and develop his/her own practice in response. (3 cr.)

BIOL 220. Principles of Microbiology. This course is designed to acquaint students with microorganisms and

their activities. Topics include bacterial cell structure and function, metabolism, bacterial genetics, and the role

of microorganisms (bacteria and viruses) in disease, immunity, and other selected applied areas (such as food

production, waste degradation, biotechnology). Laboratory portion of the course will help students become

familiar with a variety of microbiological techniques. It also includes experiments designed to illustrate major

concepts of bacteriology and immunology. (4 cr.)

COMM 180. Movement I. Students will be introduced to movement practice, ranging from traditional dance

styles (ballet, jazz, modern) to improvisation with a special emphasis given to theater movement (LeCoq,

Viewpoints) and performance. (2 cr.)

IR 360. Comparative Economic Systems. This course is an exploration of the different economic systems of the

world.(4 cr.)

SCI 220 and 220L. Health Profession Practicum. The Health Professions Practicum is offered to provide

students opportunities to observe the clinical and administrative responsibilities of various health careers. The

course focuses on Christian understandings of vocation and calling, fosters self-reflection on the observational

experience and healthcare topics and facilitates assessment of work-related skills. The practicum includes a

summative assignment in which students consider the links between healthcare issues, interpersonal

communication and faith in their future healthcare practice. The student will observe and interact with health

care professionals in a variety of clinical settings for approximately 30 hours. Students are encouraged to have

either Tuesday or Thursday afternoon open for 3-4 hours for the observation experiences. (1 cr.)

Page 5: Course Schedule - wheaton.edu · assignment and may require an application for late registration and result in a $75 late registration fee. Students applying for deferred enrollment

SCI 290. Health Professions Colloquium. This course provides a variety of topical discussions on issues relevant

to work in the healthcare profession today. Dialogue and reflection upon the impact of the Christian faith and

issues of medical ethics and care of various patient populations included. Discussions and assignments will

prepare students for application to health profession programs. Pre-requisite: Junior or senior standing. (1 cr.)

SOC 300. Sociology of Hate. Hate has once again invaded society like a plague. Generations after the Nazi

menace, the Cambodian genocide, and other human atrocities, people are puzzled about the dynamics of hate.

From the Charlottesville riots, one can observe that legal remedies are necessary, but not sufficient, for

curtailing the dangers of hate as well as its traumatic consequences. This course probes the sociology of hate,

integrating biblical perspectives in its curriculum. Why do persons and groups hate? What are the social factors

that produce hate? What roles do decisions, leadership, circumstances, and policies have in stimulating hate?

Where can we find remedies for hate? Which alternatives are effective? These and other questions will be

pursued in this study. (2 cr.)

SOC 450. Males, Masculinity, and Violence. Senseless male violence can burst forth anywhere, anytime. It is

often exacerbated by distorted, bogus, or hateful notions of masculinity. Why does this horrendous male

violence occur? What can be done about it? Where can engaged churches bring healing to offenders and

victims? This course probes the social scientific solutions to violent masculinity recognizing the spiritual or

theological insights endemic to Christian faith. (2 cr.)
