Introduction to microbial and
infectious diseases
2014 - 2015
Out lines 1. Define microbiology?
2. Define infectious disease?
3. Define communicable disease?
4. Discuss types of microorganism?
Microbial World And You
What is Microbiology?• Microbiology is the study of microorganisms.Micro: too small to be seen with the naked eye (cannot seen by naked eye).
Bio : life
ology : study of.
What are Microorganisms? Also called as Microbes are minute living things that individually
are usually too small to be seen with the unaided eye.
An organism that can be seen only with the aid of a microscope.
a. Microorganisms are found everywhere in the world, in all
living things, plants and animal, on and inside your body, than
there are cells that make up your entire body.
b. Microorganisms can live in the air, on land, and in fresh or salt
water environments.
c. Some of them are pathogens, can be harmful and causes
diseases, but majority of microorganisms beneficial for us.
Microorganisms - what comes to mind?
What are groups of Microorganisms?
1. Bacteria
2. Protozoan's
3. Algae
4. Parasites
5. Fungi
6. Viruses
A. Bacteriology
B. Protozoology
C. Phycology
D. Parasitology
E. Mycology
F. Virology
Types of Microorganisms
1. Bacteria: are unicellular organisms. Because they have no
nucleus, the cells are described as prokaryotic.
2. Fungi: (mushroom, and yeasts) with a true nucleus. Most fungi are
multicellular. Fungi obtain nutrients by absorbing organic material
from their environment.
3. Protozoa: are unicellular. Protozoa obtain nourishment
by absorption or ingestion through specialized
structures.
4. Algae: are unicellular or multicellular that obtain
nourishment by photosynthesis.
6. Viruses: are non cellular entities that are parasites of
cells. Viruses consist of a nucleic acid core (DNA or
RNA) surrounded by a protein coat
Types of Microorganisms
Infectious disease
Definition:
1. Infectious disease: any infection caused by microbes or parasites.
2. Communicable disease: infection transmitted from persons or animals to other persons.
Goal of studying infectious disease
- To study etiology, epidemiology, pathogenesis,
clinical manifestations, treatment and prevention
of infectious diseases.
- To control and eliminate these diseases.
(occurrence, spreading, prevention)
