California’s Mandatory Organic Waste Recycling law (AB 1826) requires businesses and multi-family complexes of five or more units to arrange for organic waste recycling services.* Some examples of organic waste include:
Food Scraps: solid, semisolid, and liquid food, such as fruit, vegetables, cheese, meat, bones, poultry, seafood, bread, rice, pasta and oils.
Yard Trimmings: grass clippings, leaves, flowers, hedge trimmings, weeds, etc.
*Multi-family complexes are required to recycle yard trimmings but they are not required to recycle food waste.
