AGRICULTURE income

Welcome to Texas AgriLife Extension Service - Rockwall County located just east of Dallas. Named for the phenomenon of the "rock wall", the county provides unique quality of life experiences for its residents. The Extension Program, as directed by the Rockwall County Leadership Advisory Board, strives to serve a diverse population from farmers/producers to suburban/urban dwellers. The west side of the county is made up of a portion of Lake Ray Hubbard.

Rockwall County is very unique in that it is the smallest county in the state geographically. However it is one of the fastest growing county in the state demographically.

Rockwall County historically produced miles and miles of cotton. This crop had not proven profitable during the last decade and disappeared. However, with the opening of the state of the art cotton gin in Delta County, we are see a re-introduction of this crop. Producers also cultivate sorghum, wheat, corn and even soybeans. Cattle still graze many acres in the county and are a cash crop for small hobby farmers. Niche marketing is beginning to take hold with vegetables, ornamentals, water gardening and alpacas. The total income received from the agriculture industry was estimated to be in the value of more than 24 million dollars for the past year.

Many people knew the agency under the name of the Soil Conservation Service. The NRCS helps farmers and ranchers to address their conservation needs and to apply beneficial conservation practices to their land. Some of the most common conservation practices are grass plantings, ponds, terraces, waterways, and grade stabilization structures. The NRCS office also has maps available for viewing concerning the following: Flood Plains, Soils, Topography, Wetlands, and Aerial Photos. TEXAS ANIMAL HEALTH

COMMISSION

The Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) has legislative authority to make and enforce regulations to prevent, control, and eradicate specific infectious animal diseases which endanger livestock. TAHC regulations are made and adopted by 13 governor-appointed commissioners who represent the general public and various livestock industries and professions. The commissioners serve staggered six-year terms and meet as needed to study the regulatory needs of the agency, review public comments on proposed regulation changes, and adopt new rules when necessary. The TAHC also works to keep pests from reoccurring as major livestock health hazards. Ultimately, the TAHC's mission and role is the assurance of marketability and mobility of Texas livestock. The TAHC works to sustain and continue to make a vital contribution to a wholesome and abundant supply of meat, eggs, and dairy products at affordable costs. The mission of the TAHC is the prevention, surveillance, diagnosis, control and eradication of targeted diseases and conditions affecting livestock, poultry and exotic livestock and fowl. Some of the targeted diseases have human health implications. These functions contribute to a solid foundation for economic prosperity, while decreasing human health risks for the people of Texas.

FARM SERVICE AGENCY

The Farm Service Agency is an agency of the United States Department of Agriculture. The FSA administers Federal Programs on a local basis. Programs assist farmers and ranchers in the production of agricultural products. The categories include Commodity Programs, Conservation Programs, Agricultural Credit, Non Insured Crop Assistance Programs, and Emergency Relief Programs. Land owners should notify the FSA when they purchase agricultural land. If an owner is recorded with the FSA office they will be placed on the mailing list and will receive a regular newsletter that will inform them of the programs available to them. A copy of the deed is required when registering ownership. The FSA office maintains a complete set of aerial photographs for the county. Copies of these photographs are available to land owners. FSA has land measuring capabilities, both from the photographs and in the field. Field measurements require the payment of a fee. However, in most cases, measurements can be made in the office from the aerial maps at no charge. The FSA county office staff works under

The Texas Wildlife Services Program provides statewide leadership in the science, education and practice of wildlife management to protect the state’s agricultural, industrial and natural resources, as well as the public’s health, safety and property. Wildlife is important to the economy and to the aesthetics and health of our environment; yet, some wildlife do at times cause problems that must be dealt with in a professional manner. Animal damage to Texas resources, such as agriculture, natural resources, property, and human health and safety, cause millions of dollars in losses each year. Since wildlife is a public resource that belongs to all citizens, government has a responsibility to respond to the problems wildlife cause while at the same time protecting the resource being damaged. Resolving conflicts between wildlife and human interests requires wildlife damage management expertise. Wildlife damage management is an integral component of professional wildlife management. The complex wildlife damage management environment includes a combination of biological, legal, socio-political, financial and technical considerations. The goal of Wildlife Services is to protect the State’s agricultural, industrial, and natural resources and the public’s health, safety and property from damage caused by wildlife. Texas Wildlife Services accomplishes this through a cooperation with federal, state, and private entities, servicing both rural and urban areas, utilizing technical assistance and direct control services in this specialized field of wildlife management.

Agriculture faces great challenges. We're here to deliver solutions. We are scientists, consultants, collaborators, plant breeders, greenhouse assistants, agricultural economists, forage agronomists, beef producers, soils and crops specialists, wildlife biologists, biochemists, mycologists, genomicists, community members, teachers, life-long learners. About 350 of us come together from 20-plus countries to work at Noble Research Institute headquarters in Ardmore, Oklahoma, and research farms in the surrounding area, to carry out the vision of Lloyd Noble. The Agriculture Division provides free help to regional agricultural producers and other stewards of natural resources to help them achieve their financial, production and quality of life goals. The Division serves a 47 county area within a 100 mile radius of the Noble Research Institute headquarters in Ardmore, which includes both Oklahoma and Texas. Activities are organized into four interconnected areas: Research We focus on research that will help farmers and ranchers improve land stewardship and productivity regionally, nationally and internationally. Our approach considers all spectrums of agricultural research, including the basic, translational and applied. We study the basic molecular

and genetic levels of how plants grow and interact with the microbial world around them, develop stronger plants more tolerant to drought and resistant against diseases and pests, and evaluate how well cattle perform in various grazing systems. Producer Relations We keep the heart of agriculture – its farmers, ranchers and other land stewards – at the forefront of our activities. They are our friends and neighbors, and we help them meet their goals through one-on-one, no-cost consultation. These relationships keep us connected to real-life producer needs so research remains focused on answering relevant, pressing questions. We also provide leadership and training for other agricultural organizations so that together we can better serve agriculture. Applied Agricultural Systems Research and Technology We are producers, too. We live out what we teach, and we know challenges facing agriculture first-hand. We raise forage-based beef cattle, grow horticultural crops like pecans, and manage natural resources on seven research and demonstration farms that span 14,000 acres of southern Oklahoma. These farms provide a place for researchers to apply their work in a real-world environment. Producers can also visit our farms to see innovation in action. Education We share our knowledge and expertise, including what we've learned from our research, with students of all ages. We host adult agricultural seminars and workshops related to cattle, forages, natural resources and economics. We also foster an awareness and appreciation for agriculture in the next generation, our future problem-solvers. We offer a variety of interactive learning opportunities, including tours and internships.
