As a homeless teenager, singer-songwriter Jimmy Wayne’s life turned around when he met an elderly woman, Bea Costner, who hired him to cut her lawn every week. She would compensate him with $20 and a Coca-Cola, and he ended up living with the Costners.

He has told that story through the years at concerts; in his book, Walk to Beautiful; and, more recently, on his blog. Wayne finally got to recount it to a gathering of Coke executives on April 20.

“The room just cheered like you wouldn’t believe,” he says. “I was like, ‘Man, this is not a one-time speech. I’ve been trying to get your attention for 18 years.’ ”

Appropriately, Coca-Cola is now using one of Wayne’s songs, “I Love You This Much,” among just seven coun-try copyrights in its new Share a Coke and a Song campaign, which debuted April 18. It’s an extension of the Share a Coke program in which people’s names were imprinted on the soft drink’s la-bels. Those names are now replaced by the title — or a key lyric — from a song.

Taylor Swift’s “You Belong With Me,” Faith Hill’s “The Way You Love Me” and Willie Nelson’s

“Always on My Mind” are among the country tracks in the ef-fort, which uses approximately 70 songs total. They range in eras from Charlie Puth’s current pop single “One Call Away” to the public-domain composition “Take Me Out to the Ball

Game,” and in styles from Bachman Turner Overdrive’s classic-rocker “Takin’ Care of Business” to Carlos Vives’ Latin-pop release “Ella Es Mi Fiesta” (“She’s My Party”).

“We wanted to use the lyrics that connect people and create those mo-ments of sharing,” Coke global head of music Joe Belliotti told Billboard in March. “This was not about finding the most popular songs of today. This was about finding lyrics that can help you connect with someone. Because at the end of the day, music and the lyr-ics in songs help you express what you sometimes aren’t able to put into words yourself.”

Using phrases to connect people isn’t an entirely new idea.

“It’s like those Valentine’s [Day] sweet-tart things that have those little messages on them,” says Shane McA-nally, a co-writer of Kacey Musgraves’

“Follow Your Arrow,” which is also in the campaign.

And using music isn’t a new idea for Coca-Cola, either. A 1971 Coke ad built around “I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing” is widely regarded as among the most effective spots in history (one of its writers, British-born Roger Cook, became a Nashville songwriter, responsible for Don Williams’ “I Believe in You” and George Strait’s “One Night at a Time”). Dot-tie West’s “Country Sunshine” was also part of a Coke campaign.

In this modern Coke/music hookup, the songs on the labels can be scanned with the Shazam app, allowing consumers to hear a part of a track — and maybe become aware of the artist — and create a lip-synch video that they’re able to share.

“Coca-Cola should fit anyone, no matter who they are — whatever race, whatever job they do,” says “Always on My Mind” co-writer Mark James. “Coca-Cola has been around so long that it’s just one of those icon things. You’d miss it if it wasn’t here anymore.”

Coke, in fact, is extremely protective of the brand. The recipe for its syrup is a closely guarded secret, and its marketing efforts — particularly after its New

Coke debacle in 1985 — are meticulous.“The world we’re living in today, every-

body has to be so diplomatic about what they believe in and [whether they] might offend somebody,” says Wayne. “I thought, ‘Wow, I can hardly believe they’re going to print my song on their cans and bottles.’ ”

Coke had to pass a test, too — and not the Pepsi challenge. A line from Lee Green-wood’s “God Bless the U.S.A.” — “I’m proud to be an American” — is included in Coke’s campaign, but Greenwood isn’t in a hurry to license it to everyone.

“I wouldn’t put it on a beer label,” says Greenwood. “But if Coke wants to use it, I think it’s really cool to be associated with America’s most popular and well-known brand.”

Coke has not revealed details of the deals it made with publishers, though Greenwood says it’s a favored-nation agreement — thus, every title receives the same compensation — and both sides hold an option to continue the as-sociation after one year.

That said, it’s difficult to believe that any-one who thought the deal was a winner before-hand would want to get out of it after being associated with the iconic Coke logo.

“It’s my favorite soft drink and it always has been,” says “Follow Your Arrow” co-writer Brandy Clark. “I just love the way it looks. I love the glass bottles. To me, it’s American. It’s like Ford and Chevy and Coke — but actu-ally, Coke goes above Ford and Chevy for me. You know, it’s like the [New York] Yankees.”

Clark is tied to one of the minor pitfalls in the program. She received a Grammy nomination this year for her album cut “Hold My Hand,” which is a title that’s featured on some Coke bottles. Her fans might think it’s her song that’s being licensed, though more consum-ers are likely to associate the title with Darius Rucker — “Hold My Hand” was Hootie & The Blowfish’s 1994 breakthrough hit. But the actual track in question, determined by using the Shazam app, is Jess Glynne’s 2015 re-lease “Hold My Hand,” which reached the top 10 on Billboard’s Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart.

Less problematic is Luke Bryan’s “I Don’t Want This Night to End,” which — much like Wayne’s song — represents a personal Coke connection to Dallas Davidson, one of Bryan’s three co-writers. The Share a Coke campaign phrase is ironic in his case — Davidson’s grandmother gave out Coca-Cola stock certificates at Christmastime, essentially sharing shares of the company. The Georgia-born Davidson still holds his stock in the business, which he visited during a school function as a kid.

“That’s a pretty big deal how it all comes full circle,” says Davidson. “You’re touring Coca-Cola when you’re 7 years old, and then when you’re 38 years old, they’re putting your song title on the side of the can. That’s pretty badass.”

Florida Georgia Line’s “Confession” (Republic Nashville) crowns Billboard’s Country Airplay chart (dated May 7), lifting 2-1, up 4 percent to 44.8 million audience impressions in the tracking week ending April 24, according to Nielsen Music.

Penned by Rodney Clawson, Ross Copperman and Matt Jenkins, “Confession” marks a milestone for the duo of Brian Kelley and Tyler Hubbard. The fifth single from FGL’s sophomore album, Anything Goes, is the pair’s fourth to top Country Airplay, following “Sippin’ on Fire” (June 20, 2015), “Sun Daze” (Feb. 28, 2015) and “Dirt” (Oct. 25, 2014). (The title-track fourth single peaked at No. 3 in October.)

Florida Georgia Line’s first full studio set, Here’s to the Good Times, also produced four Country Airplay leaders (2012-14), matching the record for the most No. 1s from a debut major- label album, previously set by Brooks & Dunn (Brand New Man, 1991-92) and Zac Brown Band (The Foundation, 2008-10).

Now, FGL joins ZBB as the only two acts to accomplish four Country Airplay chart-toppers from each of their first two albums. ZBB’s second full-length, You Get What You Give, produced the No. 1s “As She’s Walking Away” (featuring Alan Jackson), “Colder Weather,” “Knee Deep” (featuring Jimmy Buffett) and “Keep Me in Mind” (2010-11).

“It still feels like a dream to us and we’re humbled,” FGL’s Kelley tells Billboard. “ ‘Confession’ is in our hearts and we are thankful it had a chance to be a single and have an impact. It really opens the door for what we’ve got coming on [April 29].”

“This is an amazing achievement and it couldn’t happen to nicer people,” adds Big Machine Label Group executive vp and Republic Records president Jimmy Harnen. “On the eve of launching their debut single from their third LP, FGL continues to lead the pack.”

Wait — what was that about April 29 and a new single and album? While not divulging the exact date, Harnen told Billboard that the duo’s third album will arrive in late summer.

KKBQ Houston PD Johnny Chiang feels that Florida Georgia Line gave

radio something fresh with “Confession.” “FGL is one of the acts to pioneer a new sound, yet they’ve managed to mature as well,” he tells Billboard. “While their music always performs with younger demos, this one also fared well with the older end of our audience.”

‘T’ IS FOR TOP 10 As Dierks Bentley’s “Somewhere on a Beach” (Capitol Nashville) leads Billboard’s hybrid Hot Countr y Songs chart, which encompasses airplay, digital sales and streaming, for a second week, Thomas Rhett’s “T-Shirt” (Valory) enters the top 10 (12-9). “T-Shirt” is sparked by a

14 percent increase on Country Airplay, where it also reaches the top 10 (14-10; 28.5 million, up 13 percent). The track zooms 10-4 on Country Digital Songs (25,000 downloads sold; up 16 percent) and 10-5 on Country Streaming Songs (2.3 million U.S. streams, up 14 percent). “T-Shirt” is Rhett’s sixth Hot Country Songs top 10 and seventh Country Airplay top 10.

Also on Country Airplay, Luke Bryan’s “Huntin’, Fishin’ & Lovin’ Every Day” (Capitol Nashville) becomes his 21st top 10 (12-9; 30 million, up 10 percent).

SIMPSON SAILS TO NO. 1 On Top Country Albums, Americana singer-songwriter Sturgill Simpson tops the survey for the first time as Sailor’s Guide to Earth (Atlantic/

Atlantic Group) bows with 52,000 in its opening week. It also starts at No. 1 on Top Current Albums, Top Rock Albums and Folk Albums. Simpson’s third appearance on Top Country Albums follows his No. 31-peaking 2014 debut, High Top Mountain, and 2015’s Metamodern Sounds in Country Music (No. 8).

MARIE’S NEW ‘MUSIC’ Marie Osmond achieves her first solo top 10 on the Top Country Albums chart in more than 41 years as Music Is Medicine (Oliveme) enters at No. 10 (4,000). She posts her first solo entry since 1989’s No. 68- peaking Steppin’ Stone and first top 10 since 1974’s In My Little Corner of the World (No. 10). Osmond tallied one top 10 since with brother Donny: 2011’s Donny & Marie opened and peaked at No. 7 (16,000).

CMA RESEARCHES CONSUMER SHIFTSAs consumers and the music industry continue to adapt to a changing technological environment, understanding the fan base — and the rate at which it is altering its behaviors — is increasingly challenging.

The Country Music Association will release important findings about consumers’ evolving behaviors and attitudes in a three-part webinar during May. “Understanding Today’s Shifting Consumer Landscape and Changing Country Music Audiences, Music Choices and Behaviors” launches at 2 p.m. CT on May 3, with successive one-hour installments at the same time on May 10 and 17.

Available to CMA members, the webinars are based on research conducted during the fourth quarter of 2015 through the Futures Company. The data is expected to provide clues about how country fans will interact with the genre in the coming years.

The individual sessions are “Tomorrow’s Music Consumer and Emerging Behaviors” (May 3), “New Ownership Beliefs and Music Spending Profiles” (May 10) and “The Fan Economy Difference” (May 17).

For more info about accessing the webinar, email the CMA research department here.

MUSIC NOTESThe stadium concert season began in earnest this past weekend as Kenny Chesney launched his Spread the Love Tour on April 23 with the first-ever concert at Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn, Ala., the home of the Auburn Tigers football team. Chesney included his opening acts in his set, with Miranda Lambert providing the female voice on “You and Tequila,” Sam Hunt returning for “Come Over” and Old Dominion chipping in on “Save It for a Rainy Day” in front of a reported 50,000 people. Meanwhile, Jason Aldean’s Sept. 9 date at Boston’s Fenway Park with Kid Rock sold out in a scant 90 minutes.

Two more charit y events are on the calendar for the week of the CMA Music Festival in Nashville. Songwriter Craig Wiseman (“Came Here to Forget,” “Live Like You Were Dying”) booked his 12th annual Stars for Second Harvest benefit for June 7 at the Ryman Auditorium, while Clay Walker scheduled his seventh annual Chords of Hope concert for Bands Against MS on June 8 at 3rd & Lindsley. Special guests for both shows will be announced a later date. Among the week’s previously announced charity outings: Darius Rucker’s seventh Darius & Friends concert for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (June 6, Wildhorse Saloon); City of Hope Celebrity Softball Game (June 7, First Tennessee Park); and Marty Stuart’s 15th annual Late Night Jam (June 8, Ryman Auditorium).

Prince’s death on April 21 may have superceded the passing of Merle Haggard in the public consciousness, but Haggard’s April 6 departure is still worthy of attention. Toby Keith, who took over for Haggard at a Las Vegas date in February that now appears to be Hag’s last concert, will pay homage to him during the May 1 American Country Countdown Awards on Fox. One of Hag-gard’s collaborators, songwriter Freddy Powers (“I Always Get Lucky With You,” “Let’s Chase Each Other Around the Room”) also is expected to provide some insight on Haggard in his autobiography The Spree of ’83, due in Febru-ary 2017 through Waldorf Publishing.

Luke Bryan may have held his last spring break concert at Spinnaker’s in Panama City, Fla., but Dierks Bentley will invade the turf come Memorial Day (May 30) for an appropriate Somewhere on a Beach Bash. The concert comes three days after the release of Bentley’s new album, Black, and it’s just down the road from Destin, where three of the “Somewhere on a Beach” songwriters conceived the single’s title last summer.

BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE APRIL 25, 2016 | PAGE 12 OF 18

When his father died on Dec. 5, 2015, Keith Urban was in the midst of working on what would become Ripcord, an album that’s due May 6.

That kind of event is profoundly emotional, typically inducing questions about the meaning of life, one’s core beliefs and how to prioritize one’s days. For Urban, that pondering was bound to make its way into the threads of Ripcord.

“The impact that it had is just bringing me again back into the moment and the brevity of time,” he says. “That theme is in a few songs on this record — ‘Wasted Time,’ for sure, is sort of reflective. When life is its simplest, it’s really at its best.”

Released to radio on March 29 through Play MPE, “Wasted Time” finds Urban doing what he seems to do best, pushing the boundaries of country music while balancing his appreciation for its foundations. But it avoids the moody, downcast atmosphere that would be expected from someone adjusting to life without his dad.

Instead, the song begins with co-producer Greg Wells (Adele, Katy Perry) playing an EDM-like synthesized keyboard. It’s a full 29 seconds before an electric guitar thread and the choppy sounds of ganjo percussion move the production to more familiar turf. By the time the journey ends, Urban manages to fold those jarring dance tones into his standard wheelhouse with a big singalong chorus, lots of six-string sounds and a cheery, nigh-inspirational message about life in the 21st century.

“I always chuckle when people go, ‘Oh, I’m trying to make a different record,’ ” says Urban. “Anybody can make a different record. But to try and make a different record that still has enough familiarity to keep you listening to it, and it still feels and sounds right — that’s what I’m always trying to balance in the studio.”

Wells played a big role in the “different” part of “Wasted Time” when they started writing the song in late January or early February.

“Keith was actually the one really pushing to have it not sound like what you would think maybe it should sound like,” says Wells. “He’s like, ‘Look, I’ve been making records for 20 years. I will still bring my thing to it, but in terms of what you do, Greg, I really want it to be fresh and kind of not what you would think is possible.’ So I just went for it.”

The process started at Wells’ Rocket Carousel Studio in Culver City, Calif., with pop songwriter James “JHart” Abrahart, who has cuts on current albums by Justin Bieber and Charlie Puth, bringing a third voice to the writing mix. Wells and Urban had met only briefly during the 1990s, when they both were part of a songwriting retreat at a French castle, so there was an introductory period before the work began in earnest.

“We were kicking the can around as it were, and just getting to know each other a little bit, and then at some point I just started hearing this really funky, almost kind of Michael Jackson Off the Wall, very syncopated thing,” recalls Wells.

He developed a six-chord progression on the keyboard, Urban pulled a guitar from the studio wall, and the music began to take shape. The big-picture life stuff that his father’s death triggered came tumbling out in their conversation as the Australian Urban, Canadian Wells and British-born, Atlanta-raised Abrahart found commonalities in their upbringing.

“We were talking about some of the similar things we all did — crazy shit, running around town, drinking too much, smoking too much, hanging out down by a river,” says Urban. “Jay liked the title ‘Wasted Time.’ That’s kind of what all that is, but it’s when you’re really living.”

Once the first verse was mostly finished, they took a break at a nearby Starbucks. When they got back to the music, Urban strapped on the guitar

again and instantly found the chorus by changing direction.“It’s a big, straight-up, three-chord, power-chord chorus in the tradition

of The Who,” he says.Wells recorded it all as they went along. Once the basic blueprint was laid,

he focused on building the tracks while Urban and Abrahart concentrated on lyrics in the next room. Urban folded in a rope swing he and his friends played on in Caboolture, Queensland. And they dropped in two references to Guns N’ Roses, name-checking “Sweet Child O’ Mine” in the chorus and inserting a “Guns on the radio” line in the prechorus.

“I remember us discussing whether we should clarify that we’ve got ‘Guns N’ Roses on the radio,’ as opposed to we’ve got ‘Guns on the radio,’ because that might be a different, more of an NRA song,” Urban says with a laugh. “We were like, ‘Well, if someone thinks that, the chorus will clarify that here pretty soon.’ ”

They didn’t finish it that day, but some of Urban’s original vocals would remain on “Wasted Time” all the way to the final product. Urban and Abrahart also worked on background vocals with Abrahart singing a third above the melody and both of them stacking extra vocals way off the mic to create a bigger sound.

“That’s a nice element to blend in,” says Wells. “You don’t really hear it, but if you took it out, you would miss it.”

Late in the track’s development, Urban added ganjo, heightening the country quotient.

“He grooves so hard when he plays that the banjo becomes like a sequencer almost,” says Wells. “It masks a lot of the stuff that’s going on behind it. But when that banjo went on, it not only sounded a billion times better, but it just felt like the song had come home in terms of the listener.”

Urban, meanwhile, f lashed back to some of the top 40 clubs he had played in the early part of his career, remembering that even in the midst of the dance grooves, the crowd always responded if the DJ played John Denver’s “Thank God I’m a Country Boy.” Urban decided the ganjo was the right choice for the solo section.

“That memory of ‘Thank God I’m a Country Boy’ has always stayed with me, and I thought this would be the hoedown moment right smack dab in the middle of this synth-based song,” says Urban.

Wells had him play for 20 minutes, then took the best pieces for the solo, including an inventive snippet of slide banjo.

The final mix of “Wasted Time” was completed just days before it went to radio, with its bouncy rhythms and upbeat message synced to summer’s playful energy. It already is No. 15 on the Country Airplay tally in its fourth charted week, paying homage discreetly to Urban’s father. Not only has Robert Ur-ban’s death made Urban more philosophical, it also has brought a spotlight to his dad’s influence on his music.

“I’m becoming more and more aware of the rhythmic blood that f lows through me because of my father, who was a drummer his whole life, and my grandfather, who played piano his whole life,” says Urban. “My lineage is very rhythm-based, and I remember so much rhythm in our house from my dad tapping on the table to jingling his keys to tapping on the dashboard of the car. He was always in rhythm mode.”

“Wasted Time,” meanwhile, recognizes the ticking of the clock as one of the rhythms of life. Urban views it metaphorically — the song digs up joy from the past, but he doesn’t have to go backward to find happiness in living in the moment.

“Right now I feel my life is the best it has ever been,” he says, “but probably because it feels like it’s back to being in that place of enjoying life again. Which I did when I was a kid.”

BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE APRIL 25, 2016 | PAGE 13 OF 18

As warm spring weather arrives in most of the states, country radio fans might be tuning in expecting to hear more of the uptempo fare that typically populates playlists from this time of year through the end of summer. Instead, they’re hearing more ballads and downtempo fare than usual, according to Bob Walker, Hall Communications vp programming and PD at WCTK (Cat Country 98.1) Providence, R.I., who asks, “What’s up with all the slow, sleepy stuff from Nashville as we gear up for May?”

After crunching the numbers in his music scheduling system, Walker notes, “In the Billboard top 30, I’ve got 10 coded as ‘ballad’ or ‘can’t play next to ballad.’ If you look at the top 30 as the snapshot of the format, a third of it is too low-energy for late spring. Then you look at what’s waiting in the wings, [and] I’m getting sent more ballads ... in April!”

Walker also wonders if this is why hot AC and classic hits are “kicking our butts this month,” according to Nielsen’s Portable People Meter. “In the markets I program against country, we are going to ram tempo down their throat to boost our hot ACs. The labels are just making it easier.”

While he does not see it as a ref lection of the quality of the songs themselves, which Walker notes are all “really good,” among the currents he has coded as “slow and sleepy” are Cole Swindell’s “You Should Be Here,” Lee Brice’s “That Don’t Sound Like You,” Tim McGraw’s “Humble and Kind,” Blake Shelton’s “Came Here to Forget,” Eric Church’s “Record Year,” Frankie Ballard’s “It All Started With a Beer” and Dan & Shay’s “From the Ground Up.” He adds to that list three more coded as “low energy” and “can’t play next to a ballad”: Brantley Gilbert’s “Stone Cold Sober,” Jon Pardi’s “Head Over Boots” and Dierks Bentley’s “Somewhere on a Beach.” Additionally, Walker says there are “a slew” of songs below No. 30 on the Billboard chart that are slow, and new projects with a similar tempo from Easton Corbin, Chris Janson, Parmalee and Craig Campbell are in the pipeline. They all impact before Memorial Day.

Walker adds that he’s “seriously thinking about a major [playlist] house-cleaning to ‘turn up the burners’ ... Radio success is all about flow,” he says. “There comes a point where the flow is more important than any one song.”

But not all country programmers share Walker’s level of concern. WGH-FM (97.3 The Eagle) Virginia Beach, Va., PD Mark McKay says the oversupply of ballads is at least partially balanced by current singles from Jason Aldean, Kenny Chesney, Keith Urban, Jake Owen and Zac Brown Band that “are all mid- or uptempo.” McKay says the only problem the surfeit of slow singles has caused for him is “additional pressure on our recurrent/gold libraries. It’s increasingly tough to get a ballad to schedule, so the tempo songs in the library

are getting played a bit more than is optimal.” Plus, he admits, “It is taking a bit longer to groom logs, that’s for sure.”

“The slow songs haven’t brought the station down much,” says WCYQ Knoxville, Tenn., music director Opie Joe Creason. “A little more editing time and an adjustment or two on a rule fixes most of the major issues ... If that means three songs in our heavy category are ballads, so be it.”

WBWL (101.7 The Bull) Boston PD Lance Houston says the plethora of downtempo songs this spring “isn’t a huge issue for me. I make sure that we balance the slower currents with the recurrent and gold records that are in the clocks next to the currents anyway. There are also a few of the slower songs that

are on the chart that I’m not playing yet, and that’s strategic.”

McKay says, “If we ig nored ‘ Humble and K ind,’ ‘From the Ground Up’ and [Thomas Rhett’s recu r rent] ‘Die a Happy Ma n’ because they didn’t have screaming guitars, we’d be missing out on big songs. Does tempo get considered? Sure. But if a ballad is a slam-dunk, you just have to get creative with what’s scheduled around it.”

Like Houston, KIIM Tucson, Ariz., PD Buzz Jackson says, “I don’t worry too much about tempo. If you look at a music test, the songs at the top are always [slow ones like] ‘Don’t Take the Girl’ or ‘The Chair’ or ‘The Dance.’ Our format appeals to emotions often, and tempo is a big part of that. The trick is to find those great songs that people will still want to hear in 10 years and balance that with all the other things you strive to balance the music blend with.” As for current music, he says, “We haven’t had a problem with tempo yet, although it is something that I keep an eye on. But a great song is a great song, and nobody ever called to complain that we were playing too many great songs.”

McK ay sees it as a posit ive development. He says labels’ “old

theory” that a debut single from a baby act must always have tempo even if it’s not the act’s best song “seems to be waning. I’m inclined to hear the best first. It might be a slower climb, sure, but it beats a bad tempo record stalling in the 50s.”

Creason calls the current plentitude of slow songs “a nice change of pace for country radio. For the longest time, all we had were uptempo, ‘live in the moment’ records. It’s nice to see country go back to where it came from with songs that tell a story.”

Houston, meanwhile, has a piece of advice for any programmers concerned about tempo right now. “I challenge stations to go out there and find good, uptempo songs to play that aren’t singles,” he says. “Why does Nashville have to dictate to us what to play? I’m 700-plus spins into ‘Raised on It’ by Sam Hunt, and it’s testing [like] a hit. I know other markets are playing Old Dominion’s ‘Beer Can in a Truck Bed,’ and some were playing Zac Brown [Band’s] ‘Castaway’ before it was a single.”

Country Indicator

CHARTS LEGENDRANKINGSCountry Airplay is ranked by total audience impressions for the week ending Sunday based on monitored airplay of 151 stations by Nielsen BDS. Audience totals on the chart are derived, in part, using certain Arbitron Inc. copyrighted Persons 12+ audience estimates (under license © 2016, Arbitron Inc.) Country Indicator is tabulated using reported playlists and Nielsen BDS-monitored airplay at 106 stations, ranked by total plays.

BULLETSl Awarded on Country Airplay to titles gaining audience or remaining flat from the previous week. A song will also receive a bullet if its percentage loss in audience does not exceed the percentage of monitored

station downtime for the format. Titles that decline in audience but increase in detections will also receive a bullet if the total audience erosion for the week does not exceed 3%. Bullets are awarded on Country Indicator to titles gaining plays or remaining flat from the previous week.

TIESOn Country Airplay, if two songs are tied in total audience, the song with the larger increase in audience is placed first. On Country Indicator, if two songs are tied in total plays, the song with the larger increase in plays is placed first.

RECURRENTSOn Country Airplay, descending titles below No. 10 in either audience or detections are moved to recurrent after 20 weeks, provided that they are not still

gaining enough audience points to bullet or if they rank below No. 10 and post a third consecutive week of (non-bulleted) audience decline, regardless of total chart weeks. On Country Indicator, descending, non-bulleted titles below No. 10 are moved to recurrent after 20 weeks or if they post a third consecutive week of decline in plays after 10 weeks.

HOT SHOT DEBUTAwarded to the highest-ranking new entry on Country Airplay and Country Indicator, respectively.

MOST ADDEDThe total number of new adds officially reported to Billboard by each reporting station, or by an automatic-add threshold (seven plays for the first time in a chart tracking week, according to Nielsen BDS) for stations that do not report adds.

MOST INCREASED AUDIENCE/PLAYSMost Increased Audience on Country Airplay and Most Increased Plays on Country Indicator list the songs with the greatest week-to-week increases in total audience or plays, respectively.

AIRPOWERAwarded on Country Airplay to titles ranking inside top 20 in plays and audience rankings for the first time, with increases in both plays and audience.

BREAKERAwarded on Country Airplay to titles achieving airplay (at least one detection) at 60% of reporting stations for the first time.

BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE APRIL 25, 2016 | PAGE 18 OF 18

On April 30, 1988, Rodney Crowell a nd Rosanne Cash c row ned Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart with the Crowell-penned “It’s Such a Small World.” The two married in 1979 and collaborated creatively many times — they co-wrote Cash’s 1985 No. 1 “I Don’t Know Why You Don’t Want Me” — but “World” marked their only Hot Country Songs entry credited as a duo.

“World” was Crowell’s first Hot Country Songs No. 1 and the first of five chart-toppers from his album Diamonds & Dirt, the first set to produce five No. 1s on the tally; Brad

Paisley matched the record with five of his own from 2007’s aptly named Fifth Gear. Crowell scored all five of his No. 1 singles from Diamonds & Dirt; Cash collected 11 Hot Country Songs No. 1s.

The parents of three daughters together, Crowell, now 65, and Cash, 60, divorced in 1992. Each remains a chart force: Crowell and Emmylou Harris reached the top 10 of the Top Country Albums chart with their duets sets Old Yellow Moon (2013) and The Travelling Kind (2015), while Cash’s The River & the Thread hit No. 2 in 2014. —JIM ASKER
