All Gather to Remember

Every year at just this time,

In cold and dark December,

Families around the world

All gather to remember,

With presents and with parties,

With feasting and with fun,

Customs and traditions

for people old and young.

- Helen H. Moore

The Holidays are a magical time in Little

Compton. As cold winds blow off the gray

Atlantic, our focus turns inward to families,

friends and community. Leaden skies filled

with snow blot out the sun’s feeble rays, yet

Sakonnet glows warmly with children’s

dreams and holiday traditions. Frosty morns

herald the season of Thanksgiving feasts, car-

ols and snowflakes, the hustle and bustle of

frenzied shoppers, holiday concerts, candles in

the windows, Christmas trees filled with twin-

kling lights and days of Auld Lang Syne.

This edition of Community Connections high-

lights all those special events that make Little

Compton such a unique place during the Holi-

days.

Country Christmas Sing Along Spectacular

Performed by The Sweetback Sisters

Sweetback Sisters, Emily

Miller and Zara Bode, will be

performing their signature

holiday performance at the

Community Center on Satur-

day, December 20th, from

5:30 - 7:30 PM. This up and

coming country/folk band has

gained popularity throughout

New England. Recently at

The Narrows, this will be

their first performance in Lit-

tle Compton. We’ll be getting

in the holiday spirit with their amazing harmonies and lively ren-

ditions of all of our favorite Christmas songs. Don’t miss it! Tick-

ets are $20 per person. Dinner is included. Wine and beer will be

available. Call 635-2400 to reserve seats and purchase tickets.

Little Compton’s Holiday Tradition –

the Ben Wilkie Tree Spree

The 21st annual Ben Wilkie Memorial Tree Spree – a true holi-

day tradition - will be held on Sunday, December 7th from 1 to 7

PM in the Wilbur School Gym. Dozens of themed, decorated

Christmas trees as well as a variety of other donated items will

be available to admire and (hopefully) win. Food will be avail-

able all day, and there will be a small business and craft show in

the adjacent school commons area. The Tree Spree has become

more than just a fund-raising event; it is part of the fabric of the

Little Compton community and it marks the beginning of the

holiday season for many residents. One regular attendee noted

that he feels “in the midst of a Norman Rockwell painting” when

attending the Tree Spree every year.

Our Annual Appeal

The end of 2014 is rapidly approaching, marking the culmination of 17 years that the Community Center has served Little Compton. As a non-profit chari-table organization not funded by the Town, donations and charitable contri-butions fund fully half of our annual budget. It’s amazing what we’ve ac-complished with your help!

Since opening our doors for the first time, we have created and added pro-grams and events that serve children, families, seniors, working adults, the disabled, local businesses and other non-profits. We are proud of the depth and breadth of service we provide and look forward to improving our service every year to come. Our programs and community events are a central fea-ture of Little Compton life, providing everything from child care and educa-tion to senior services to cultural enrichment. With your contributions as the backbone of our budget, we provide an impressive list of programs to serve the community.

As you round out your 2014 charitable giving, please consider a donation to the Little Compton Community Center. Because the Community Center is entirely self-supporting and does not receive town funding, we rely on you to help us keep the Community Center vibrant and our programs opera-tional and serving Little Compton – your friends, your family, your commu-nity.

Warmest regards and best wishes for the holiday season and the New Year,

Gina Malloy, Executive Director
