Then again, maybe not. Remedies used through- out history include: n English ivy: the ancient Roman philosopher Pliny suggested that eating yel- low ivy berries before a big night out would prevent drunkenness. That said, Pliny’s medical knowledge can be looked upon with a sceptical eye: he also suggested that kiss- ing the hairy muzzle of a mouse would cure a cold. n Prayer: The medieval Christ-ian church believed that colds were caused by demons getting into the nose. This allowed part of the sufferer’s soul to leave their body, and is the historic rea- son why we cover our noses when we sneeze! n The Upward Purge: After overindulging, the Romans would head to a special room called the vomitoria, where the lord or lady would have the back of their throat tickled by a slave to make them vomit. After a glass or two of warm water, they would return to the party to con- tinue their indulgence! n Phlegm on the chest was treated by swallowing live snails, thought to eat up the mucus. Deck the halls with boughs of holly HAVE you ever won- dered how holly and ivy came to be so very close- ly associated with Christmas? If so, Dan Booth, head gardener at Brodsworth Hall, the Victorian coun- try house situated between Barnsley and Doncaster, has the answer: “Like many of our Christmas traditions, the story of holly and ivy goes back well before the birth of Christ, but over the centuries, ancient traditions have been incorporated into the Christian festivities we enjoy today,” he said. “For the Romans, holly was a symbol of good health and prosperity, so was often given as a gift in the new year, whereas pagans used holly as a healing plant, believing that it also protected you against evil spirits and lightning strikes.” Holly was also said to have sprung from the steps of Christ when he walked the Earth, the pointed leaves rep- resenting the crown of thorns placed on his head on the cross, and the red berries symbol- ising the blood he shed. Evergreens have long been established as part of the Christian tradition, particularly at Christmas, as they were thought that these plants represent- ed eternal life, with people often hanging bouquets of ever- greens, including holly and ivy, as a symbol of Christ around the Christmas period although again, it is thought that this is a Christianisation of the Norse tradition of evergreens being hung over a door to keep evil spirits away. These ‘Holly Boughs’ were common in many medieval households, although when Cromwell and his puri- tans came to power, like so many other cel- ebratory traditions, these symbolic repre- sentations of Christ were banned. However, in defiance, many people just renamed the garlands, from Holy Boughs to Holly Boughs. Often, mistletoe would be added into these decorations, and many people still fol- lowed the Viking tradi- tion of kissing under mistletoe as a sign of friendship. Many visitors throughout December are expected to buy holly for their own dec- orations from Brodsworth Hall, as Dan Booth’s team of gardeners commence the annual pruning of some of the 250 holly bushes and trees throughout the grounds. Said Dan: “We have one of the largest col- lections of holly vari- eties in the north, with between 120 and 150 different species spread throughout the grounds. At this time of year, we tend to prune the bushes back strongly – hat-racking to encourage lots of new growth and spikier leaves, so we take a lot of the trimmed branches down to our admissions desk for people to take away – there are some won- derful different foliages, including smooth leaved and var- iegated varieties.” Advertising feature £7 .95 Christopher Jessop welcomes you to the newly refurbished Mustard Pot. £7 .95 served 12 noon- 9 pm. every Sunday Midhopestones (off Stocksbridge bypass) Sunday Lunch Carvery Beef, Pork, Lamb,Turkey, Honey Roast Gammon, Fresh Salmon, Specials Board,Vegetarian option.
