Sources and search process for counselling studentsPoints to remember

    1. Spend some time thinking about important and alternative search words to describe your topic.Different databases might use alternative terms to describe the same subject, or the same databasemight display a greater number of relevant records when synonyms are used eg: multiculturalcounselling orcrosscultural counselling2. Keep a record of the references that you find so you can compile your bibliography

    3. Always check the University Library catalogue before requesting items on inter-library loan.

Searching for journals (=periodicals) in the University Library

Search for a journal title eg: British journal of guidance and counsellingand link to the electronicversion where available (in this case links to Swetswise).

A list of journal titles is also available from the Counselling subject page at:http://w3.yorksj.ac.uk/library/library--information-services/my-subject/health-and-life-sciences/counselling/journals-for-counselling.aspx

    Catalogue

The new library catalogue searches in a different way. See separate sheet of tips for searching.

Catalogue PlusThis is a new additional catalogue which enables you to search for journal articles within our librarystock.

DatabasesThe list below is a guide to useful databases. Access is direct within the University and off-campus youcan access databases by entering your university username and password which is also called theATHENS password.

    EBSCO

This is a collection of databases which help you to search for articles in journals and sometimes bookchapters, reports etc. Some of the databases provide indexing and abstracting details only, while othersalso link to the full text of the articles. There are several databases on Ebsco which are relevant forcounselling: PsycINFO: Psychology related resources (indexing and abstracts), PsycArticles: Full textarticles on psychology and some counselling (70 full text journal titles); Cinahl: Health-relatedresources (indexing and abstracts). Remember that all the full text journals on PsycARTICLES areindexed on PsycINFO anyway.

Some changes have been made to the layout of the EBSCO databases this summer. The limit options(to limit to our library and limit to date of publication etc) have been moved from the right side of thescreen to the left.

    PsycINFO

You may find it useful to watch the tutorial about using PsycINFO available from the counselling subjectpage at: http://library.yorksj.ac.uk/tutorials/PsycINFO/

All EBSCO databases will show if the item listed is held in the University Library, and to limit search toour library alone, use the option Journals held by the University library.Subject headings use American spellings (eg: counseling)

Examples of searches:Counselling for drug abuseSearch terms: drug abuse or drug addiction (PsycINFO searches for the terms as a phrase)AND counseling or psychotherapy (as subjects)

Add further search words in the third search box to narrow down the search results eg: family

    Other search examples:

Counsel?ing and primary care limited to a particular journal eg: Counselling psychology quarterlyin the publication name index.

You can also search more than one database at once eg: PsycINFO, Cinahl by selecting Choosedatabases.

Cinahl (Cumulative index to nursing and allied health literature).Example of a search about counselling for breast cancer:breast cancer and counsel?ing and limit to journals held by University library.

    Other databases

Academic OneFileElectronic journals package which has general subject coverage including counselling topics and ispartly full text and partly abstracts only. The results default to full text, but you can search the wholedatabase if only a few results are retrieved.Examples of searches:drug abuse or drug addiction and counsel* or therapyAmerican spellings are used in the subject index so use the same technique as with PsycINFO.Browsing subject headings to find out what terms are used finds:Drug abuse counseling and alcoholism counseling

ZetocZetoc provides access to the British Librarys electronic table of contents of journals and conferenceproceedings, which means that your search will retrieve journal articles that are held at the BritishLibrary and they therefore should be easily available on Inter-library loan.Search example: brief therapy (inverted commas searches for a phrase) and family in All fields.Or limit to a particular journal title eg brief therapy in the Journal of family therapy

Electronic journals (by title) or e-journal finderThis provides access to the full text of hundreds of electronic journals, available both on subscriptionand freely accessible via the Internet. It isnt possible to search for articles on a topic, only to check if aparticular journal is available electronically and then browse the articles within that journal. All journalsthat we can access full text, no matter what the package/database, should be listed here.

Getting hold of the materialInter-Library loans allocation: 20 requests across years two and three. For more information go to ourInter-library loans page at: http://w3.yorksj.ac.uk/library/library--information-services/get-help/help-and-information/inter-library-loans.aspxReading room at Boston Spa at http://www.bl.uk/reshelp/inrrooms/bspa/bostonspa.html

Reference use of other local libraries, for example, York and Leeds University Libraries. York Universitywill allow reference access so it should be possible to browse journals.

Try out some of the following search topics on PsycINFO and Academic OneFile:

Bereavement counsellingCounselling for asylum seekersEffectiveness of group counselling for adults who were abused as childrenThe effect on the counsellor or therapist of counselling victims of post-traumatic stress disorder

Tips for searching the new library catalogue

    Catalogue

Searches for books, journal titles, ebooks, DVDs, CDs, videos.

Author title search best method of finding a book is to enter a mixture of author surname and somewords from the title of the book eg: Mcleod counselling

Type search words in top box then limit results if necessary by using the left hand menus which refineyour search results by author or year of publication or format (= type of material) such as book, journalor internet resource = electronic book.

View all editions and formats link When you display the list of results, the most recent edition of abook is not always displayed. To see the full range of editions available, click the link to View alleditions and formats.

Use variant spelling ofcounsel?ing subject headings on the catalogue are American, so (unlessyou know the title of the item is using the English spelling) you need to search for the word counsel?ing to retrieve both the English and American spellings. Otherwise you might miss relevant books.

    Catalogue Plus

This catalogue searches for all the resources mentioned above PLUS journal articles. This is stillexperimental and not all the journal articles will be available electronically, but could just be in print orthere might be a glitch with accessing the full text especially if it is available via Academic OneFile. Ifyou have difficulty accessing an article, please ask the library staff at the Information desk or contactthe subject librarian.

    Tips for advanced searching:

Use phrase search and alternative spellings eg: bereavement counsel?ingcognitive behavio?r therapy

Linking alternative terms using OR (must be in capital letters) eg: grief OR bereavement

Complex searcheseg: combining alternative terms with a third term: (grief OR bereavement) AND counsel?ing

How to link to the full text of the articles on Catalogue Plus:
