Could The Big Bang Theory Be Wrong?

Once upon a time, our universe was a hot, dense place. Then, out of nowhere (and no-when), itsuddenl underwent a monstrous e!pansion. "#.$ %illion ears later, we look %ack upon this momentof e!traordinar inflation and call it the &'i 'an.& Over the ears, cosmoloists have collected a heftstock of evidence that stronl supports this stor. 'ut what if there were another e!planation for howwe came to %e *hat if nothin &%aned& *hat if the universe has alwas e!isted + roup ofTaiwanese researchersis now suestin a new cosmoloical model - one that doesnt reuire a 'i'an at all.

0n his recentpaper, professor *un-1i 2hu from the 0nstitute of 2tatistics at the 3ational Tsin /ua4niversit suests that man of the current pro%lems plauin cosmolo can %e solved % his newmodel. For instance, it renders the hori5on and flatness pro%lems o%solete %ased on new eometr. 0talso does awa with the seeminl improvised e!planation that phsicists currentl ive when askeda%out the accelerated e!pansion of the universe: an e!otic form of anti-ravit called &dark ener&(see %elow). 'ased on cosmoloical evidence, dark ener is %elieved to %e responsi%le for a%out

$67 of the universes ener densit (for comparison, the kind of matter we see all around us onlaccounts for a%out 67). There is onl one pro%lem with this theor: researchers have never seen ordetected this msterious form of ener. 0n eneral relativit, dark ener is represented % thecosmoloical constant, a fude factor inserted % instein in order to prevent the universe fromcollapsin on itself. 'ut accordin to 2hu, dark ener is unnecessar.

/is model makes four ma9or claims. First of all, the speed of liht and ravit are not constant instead, the var with time as the universe evolves. 2econdl, time is infinite. 2hu also states that the spatialportion of the universe (that is, the part of spacetime that is not temporal) takes the form of a #-sphere,the four-dimensional counterpart to a sphere. ;astl, 2hu states that althouh we know that the

universe is acceleratin now, that doesnt mean it alwas has %een. 0n his realit, the universe spendstime deceleratin as well.

2hus spacetime illustrates a tpe of eternal, cclic universe with dnamic phsical laws. +nd perhapssurprisinl, all of this is more than a simple thouht e!periment. 2hu actuall compared his modelwith e!istin data from the analsis of tpe "a supernovae and found that his &theoretical predictions...fit the o%servations uite well.& instein once called the cosmoloical constant the &%iest %lunder& ofhis life. + model such as 2hus could pave the wa to vanuishin it and dark ener once and for all.
