1. INTRODUCTION
This document details the Product usage of CouCou from Prodigy Electronics.
CouCou is a Near Field Communication (NFC) device, support RF smart
card/tag reader with a zero power display.
Every transaction data can be
• stored internally in device Flash Memory
• Update via BT4.0 a connected iOS device.
The records stored locally in device internal flash can be transferred later
either via USB to a host PC system (or) through BT4.0 to a host iOS device.
The device is powered by standard 3V CR2032 coin battery.

2. BASIC USER GUIDE
This basic User Guide provides information about configuring a CouCou
device
Note - The device firmware can be configured for various customer
applications. Contact Prodigy customer service if you require any
customization of the firmware to meet your use case.

• Smart Card / RFID Tag Reader
• NFC Peer2Peer Mode
• Bluetooth Pairing
• Transaction Log Retrieval
2.1. CHECK LIST
Before you start, check followings are ready
• The CouCou device
• 2 units of Lithium Battery 3V CR2032 size
• An Apple™ iOS mobile device (iPod/iPad/iPhone) that supports low
energy Bluetooth BLE4
• CouCou Link iOS App from Prodigy, on your Apple iOS mobile
device

2.2. COUCOU INITIALIZATION
STEP 1. Slide out the battery holder
STEP 2. Place two number of 3V CR2032 size battery in battery holder.
STEP 3. Slide in the battery holder and close properly
• CouCou – Status
o CouCou enter initialization mode. o Basic system initialization o Green LED blink slowly
o LCD Refresh to Default Display

2.3. BLUE TOOTH PAIRING
Important:
1. make sure to download and install CouCou link app before starting BT pairing
operation from:www.prodigyelectronics.com/products/apps/coucoulink/
2. CouCou is a Low Energy Bluetooth device. This means, CouCou Bluetooth
connection can be made only using the provided CouCou Link App.
STEP 1. In your iOS device Settings” Turn Bluetooth ON
STEP 2. Launch CouCou Link iOS™ app on your iOS Device.
STEP 3. CouCou - Long press key - Minimum 3 second. Release key once
RED LED blinks. LCD Display’s - “Rdy to BT Pairing...” and
Mode Change from [ID] to [IB]. BT broadcast is started
(Once the BT broadcast is started REDLED blink fast, CouCou is now in BT broadcast mode.)
STEP 4. In the CouCou Link iOS™ app
� Press “Scan” button.
� List of available BLE devices will be displayed
� Select the CouCou device to pair with iOS
� Press [Connect]
� On connection success – CouCou Status
• RED LED blinks fast
• LCD Refresh
• Mode Change [IB] to [IC]

� The selected CouCou name in list will now be in Green
Color
� Press [<DEMO] to return to App main screen.
� Green check mark appears on Top right corner of the
screen. The name of connected active CouCou displayed
in main screen.
STEP 5. To disconnect the BT device,
� Press “Scan” button.
� List of connected BLE devices will be displayed
� Select the CouCou device to disconnect
� Press [Disconnect]
� On disconnection success – CouCou Status
• RED LED blinks fast
• LCD Refresh
• Mode change [IC] to [IB]
� The disconnected CouCou name will be removed from the
list
� Press [<DEMO] to return to App main screen.
� Red check mark appears on Top right corner of the screen
� The name “No device” displayed in main screen.

STEP 6. Connect your iOS device to multiple CouCou.
• Follow Step 4 to connect each of the CouCou devices
• Connected CouCou that is active highlighted in Green colour.
• Connected CouCou that is not active is highlight in Blue
colour.
• To change active device, select the name of the device and
choose SET-ACTIVE from pop-up
NOTE: User can connect multiple CouCou to the same iOS device. However, only
one CouCou device can remain active at a time.
2.4. SMART CARD / RFID TAG READER

STEP 1. Show Smart Card to CouCou device
Protocols supported are - Mifare-Classic 1K, 4K, Plus, Desfire, Ultralight,
- FeliCa (issue by Octopus – Hong Kong transit card operator)
STEP 2. Press Key – once
Green LED blink slow
STEP 3. If the Smart card read success
- Green LED blink fast
- LCD Refresh - Card Count Increases by one.
Card information read by CouCou: - Mifare: Read Card type/UID/pre-set Block data
- FeliCa: Read Card UID/Balance value CouCou internal process
- Store read data in internal memory log
STEP 4. If the card not detected (or) read failure
- Green LED blink slow and switch OFF after pre-set time-out - LCD Refresh.
- No Change in Card Count.

2.5. NFC PEER2PEER COMMUNICATION
STEP 1. Bring two CouCou devices to close proximity (within 4cm).
STEP 2. Press Key on both devices once
STEP 3. Green LED blink slow.
STEP 4. If the P2P Transaction success
- Green LED blink fast - LCD Refresh
- Transaction data is stored in internal memory log
STEP 5. If the P2P Transaction failure
- Green LED switch OFF after preset time-out
Note: After entering P2P reader mode, user can extend P2P mode by pressing the
key again and restart the NFC reader mode.

2.6. DEVICE SETUP

• Card Read Setting
• CouCou Internal setting
Card Read Setting:
Set the CouCou device to read data from particular Block/ Blocks in card/Tag
STEP 1. Under [Card Read Setting], select number of Block/ Blocks to
read. Maximum 4 Block numbers can be set to read using
CouCou device
STEP 2. Enter the Block/ Blocks Number in text box.
STEP 3. Click [SET].
STEP 4. [CouCou]
�RED LED Blink�CouCou
is set to read the card/tag.
STEP 5. App log area will show “S” if
success, or “F” for failure

CouCou Internal Setting:
i. Peer to Peer Data:
STEP 1. Enter the Peer to peer Data in the text area. Maximum
50characters can be used for Peer to Peer data.
STEP 2. Click [P2P]
STEP 3. [CouCou] �RED LED blink once
STEP 4. App log area will show “S” if success, or “F” for failure
ii. BT Name (Change the CouCou Device Name):
STEP 1. Enter BT Name in the text area (Maximum 15 Characters)

STEP 2. Click [SET].
STEP 3. [CouCou] �RED LED blink once
STEP 4. Now, disconnect the CouCou device from the app and re scan
and check for new custom set BT name.

2.7. COUCOU - DATE AND TIME
�System Setup
STEP 1. CouCou link APP→ [Time] → [System Sync].
STEP 2. CouCou Status
� RED LED Blinks
� LCD Refresh
STEP 3. System Date and Time is set
� Manual Setup
STEP 1. Enter Date (YYYYMMDD) and Time (HH:MM:SS) in the
corresponding text area
STEP 2. Click [SET]

2.8. COUCOU LCD SETUP
STEP 1. CouCou link APP→ [LCD]
STEP 2. Enter data to be displayed in the corresponding Row(s).
STEP 3. Click [SET]

STEP 5. Corresponding Row(s) data is changed and displayed on CouCou

2.9. CARD OPERATION
Card Read/Write Setup
CouCou link APP→
[Card]
� TO Check Card/Tag UUID, follow the step as mentioned below,
STEP 1. Place the “Card/Tag” near the CouCou device.
STEP 2. Enable [CHECK UID]
STEP 3. Click [SCAN]
STEP 4. Corresponding card/tag UUID will be displayed in the App log
area.

� To Write a “BLOCK” in the Card/Tag, follow the steps mentioned below,
STEP 1. Place the Card/Tag near the CouCou Device.
STEP 2. Enable [WRITE BLOCK].
STEP 3. Enter the corresponding Block Number in the first text box.
STEP 4. Enter the data in the second text box. Maximum 16 characters.

STEP 5. Click [Scan].
STEP 6. The Success/Failure result will be displayed in the app log area.

� To Read a “Block” of a Card/Tag, Follow the step mentioned below,
STEP 1. Place the Card/Tag near the CouCou device.
STEP 2. Enable [Read Block].
STEP 3. Type the Block number to be read in the text box.
STEP 4. Click [scan]
STEP 5. The data read on the corresponding block number will be
displayed in the app log area.

� To Delete the Data in a “Block” of a Card/Tag, Follow the step mentioned
below,
STEP 1. Place the Card/Tag near the CouCou Device.
STEP 2. Enable [WRITE BLOCK].
STEP 3. Enter the corresponding Block Number in the first text box.
STEP 4. Leave the second text box blank (or) empty.
STEP 5. Click [Scan].
STEP 6. The Success/Failure result will be displayed in the corresponding
app log area.

2.10. POLLING
Auto Polling Event
Note: All firmware versions will support Auto polling.
CouCou current firmware can store up to 128 Records; can be customized up to 1000 records
STEP 1. Choose [Polling] under Card Operation.
STEP 2. Turn OFF Hardisk mode, Press
STEP 3. Connect the CouCou to PC/Laptop through micro USB cable.
STEP 4. Turn ON Polling mode, Press
[CouCou] – Red LED glows steady
STEP 5. Show the Card/Tag near the CouCou device.
STEP 6. If “Success”
• Green LED blinks once.
• Card/Tag data shown in the app log area
STEP 7. If “Failure”
• RED LED glow steady.
• App log area is blank/Empty
STEP 8. Turn OFF Polling Mode, Press
STEP 9. Disconnect the CouCou device from PC/Laptop.

STEP 10. To retrieve the Polling data from CouCou device Memory
through Bluetooth , Press
STEP 11. To retrieve the polling data from CouCou device memory to
PC/laptop
• Turn ON Hardisk mode, press .
• Connect CouCou device to PC/Laptop through micro USB
cable
• CouCou will be listed as Mass storage device.
• Copy the file “INFOPOLL.TXT” that contains polling data
transaction log file.
STEP 12. To delete the Data’s from CouCou device Memory, press
• [CouCou] – Red LED blinks for preset time
• Note: Press “delete” will clear all the data from the CouCou
memory.
2.11. LOG
Button Event
Note: All firmware versions will support polling on button press event. CouCou current firmware can store up to 50 Records; can be
customized up to 1000 records
STEP 1. Choose [Log] under Card Operation.
STEP 2. Show “Card/Tag” near the CouCou device.
STEP 3. Press CouCou side button – once
STEP 4. If “SUCCESS”,
• Green LED blinks fast.
• LCD Refresh
• Card/Tag count increase by one
• Card/tag data is read and displayed in app log area.

STEP 5. If “Failure”,
• Green LED blinks slow for preset time
• LCD Refresh
• Card/Tag count do not change.
• App log area is blank/empty
STEP 6. To retrieve the Polling data from CouCou device Memory
through Bluetooth , Press
STEP 7. To retrieve the polling data from CouCou device memory to
PC/laptop
• Connect CouCou device to PC/Laptop through micro USB
cable
• CouCou will be listed as Mass storage device.
• Copy the file “INFO.TXT” that contains polling data
transaction log file.

STEP 8. To delete the Data’s from CouCou device Memory, press
� [CouCou] – Red LED blinks for preset time
� Note: Press “delete” will clear all the data from the CouCou

Version Check
STEP 1. Choose [Log] under Card Operation.
STEP 2. Enter “dv” in the text box
STEP 3. click [Send]
STEP 4. CouCou Status
• Red LED blinks once
• LCD Refresh
STEP 5. CouCou device version is displayed in app log area.

Serial Number Check
STEP 1. Choose [Log] under Card Operation.
STEP 2. Enter “ng” in the text box
STEP 3. click [Send]
STEP 4. [CouCou] – Red LED blinks once
STEP 5. CouCou device serial number is displayed in app log area.

2.12. TRANSACTION LOG RETRIEVAL
Retrieval by Bluetooth:
STEP 1. Launch the apps “CouCou Link” from Prodigy Electronics.
STEP 2. Follow these steps- connect iOS device and CouCou via BT
STEP 3. Use “CouCou Link” to initiate the log data retrieval procedure
STEP 4. Transaction log will be transferred from device to iPod.
• CouCou link APP� [Log]� [Receive]
• [CouCou] �RED LED Blinks
• Data from CouCou is send to App log area

Retrieval and send Data through Email:
STEP 1. Follow the steps mentioned in Retrieval by Bluetooth
STEP 2. Click [Email] and on the pop-up page type recipient email
address and Click [send]
Note: Please make sure email option should remain enabled on your iOS device
Retrieval by USB:
STEP 1. Connect Device USB to the USB port of your PC/MAC
STEP 2. On connection success
• Green LED glow steady
STEP 3. In PC/MAC, CouCou listed as USB mass storage device.
• Open the drive
• Copy File “INFO.TXT” and “INFOPOLL.txt” that contains the
transaction log file.
STEP 4. Disconnect CouCou devices from PC/MAC
NOTE: On connection, if RED LED ON, check battery present in CouCou. CouCou
device will connect on USB only if battery is present.

Delete Data From The CouCou Device:
• CouCou link APP� [Log]� [Delete]
• [CouCou] �RED LED Blinks for pre-set time
• Data in CouCou are deleted.
