With projects ranging from country hotels to manorestates, Emma Sims Hilditch is recognised as aspecialist in bespoke interiors for listed buildings. Sowhen she was approached to breathe new life into aGrade I listed crescent known as Somerset Place, itwas a match made in heaven.
Heaven onEARTHA Sims Hilditch project
Renowned for serpentine crescentsoverlooking the rolling Cotswoldlandscape, Bath is a world heritage
city that wears its architecture proudly.Somerset Place is no exception and hassurvived as something of a time capsule fullof original Georgian plasterwork, fireplacesand original detailing from the late 1790s.
“I believe that good design is not merelya discipline but a way of life that seeks tochallenge, inspire and engage,” says Emma.“When dealing with period properties, one
has to work closely with each client topreserve the authenticity of the architecturebut in a way that reflects current lifestylesand needs.”
Emma and her team applied thisphilosophy at Somerset Place, which has ahistory to match its landmark status. Thefaçade was designed by John Eveleigh in thelate 1700s and is a typical example of“Queen Anne front and Mary-Anne back”design characteristic of the era. Originalpurchasers would have bought a length of

the façade and employed their ownarchitects to finish the rear.
The Second World War took a heavy tollon the property, which was badly damagedin the Bath Blitz in 1942. Following the war,the damage was gradually repaired and thebuilding was integrated into the Bath SpaUniversity campus.
It was in 2005 that Somerset Place againmade history as it became the first crescentin its entirety to be offered for sale in 200years. Sims Hilditch were approached by
Future Heritage Group to be part of adevelopment team tasked with restoringthe property to its original glory.
“It is very rare that an entire Grade Ilisted crescent is put up for sale. In fact, thelast time one was on the market was whenGeorge III was on the throne so we werethrilled to be a part of its rejuvenation,” saysEmma.
Bringing her signature style to theduplex garden maisonette was a matter ofbalancing the investor’s penchant for
colourful contemporary living with thebones of the building.
“Our interior design scheme lookedto preserve the elegant characterof the historic Georgian architecture, whilst sympathetically introducing acontemporary palette of bright accents, luxurious materials, wide oak floor boardsand a complementary mix of modern andtraditional lighting,” says Emma.
Before Sims Hilditch were brought onboard, the apartment seemed to have a split

personality. Firstly, the duplex layout meant aphysical dislocation between reception rooms onthe ground floor and bedrooms on the lowerground floor. Another challenge was that the frontrooms had more period features while the rearrooms felt more contemporary as they had beenadded later.“It was vital that the generous proportions and
striking period features took centre stage, so thedesign was stripped back to create a clean, classical feel that emphasised the natural lightand mainly south facing views,” says Emma. With the design concept in place, the first port
of call was to address the flooring on the groundfloor in order to create a basis for other designelements.“We were keen to achieve a chalky white feel to
the floor,” explains Emma. “In this case, theflooring sets the mood and is a signature feature
which pulls the entire ground floor together.”Colour is another feature which is artfully used
as a unifying element that also gives each room aunique identity. In the drawing room, colours pickup the artwork from the owners private collection, while the considered use of greens and purples inthe rear rooms and open plan kitchen dining areacreate a chromatic precursor to the landscapedgarden. As a keen cook, the kitchen is one of Emma’s
favourite areas in the home. When it comes todesigning kitchens for clients, the first thing shedoes is imagine how it could enhance their way ofliving.“You don’t need a lot of space for a kitchen to
work but it is vital that it is easy to navigate. Anisland is brilliant for making a space sociable andalso for acting as a boundary.”Not surprisingly, a key part of the scheme was
making the most of the natural light, especially inthe lower ground floor rooms. When it comes tomaximising natural light, Emma advises the useof reflective materials like glass, metal and mirror.“These do have a contemporary feel so it’s
important to balance these finishes with texturedmaterials like the grass cloth wallpaper which weused on the walls or the elegant linens andsophisticated silks we used for the bedrooms.”The overall result is seamless classic yet
contemporary style; the signature look for whichEmma is known.“It’s all about giving a nod to the old while
creating a link to new,” she says. “It was a delightto be able to do this in a building as unique asSomerset Place.”

Transforming your current bedroom space into a relaxing haven needn’t be a struggle if you combine the rightbed, furniture and bed linen – and at Leekes we’ve a wide variety of looksto suit your style and budget.
Beautiful BedsNaturally, the bed should be the focal point of a bedroom - and whether you favour a frame plus mattress or storage divan set, our extensive range hassomething for everyone.
For example, in recent years the traditional bed frame has seenresurgence in popularity with ornate cast iron models and sleigh beds now available alongside co-ordinating collections in the latest gloss, woodand metal finishes.
For a serene slumber, a sumptuous divan may be the ideal solution.Consider storage solutions such asmulti-drawer or ottoman bases – butour experts advise avoiding bed ormattress purchases in isolation, as for optimum comfort they need to work asa pair.
Co-ordinated FurnitureIf your bedroom needs to be multi-functional – dressing room and bedroom in one - then it’s worth considering a bed frame with co-ordinating furniture. Adding stylish storage such as wardrobes, nightstands and tall chests will enable you torevitalise your room and clear the clutter.
Delightful DuvetsIt’s important to choose the right duvet and pillows and there are a whole host of filling types and tog weights available – each influencing the weight, warmth, comfort and price – as not all duvets suit everyone.
Natural fillings, for example, made from duck feather or luxurious goose down make very comfortable duvets asthey are soft, light and durable whilst synthetic filling such as polyester are ideal for allergy sufferers. The higher the tog rating, the warmer the duvet and as natural fillings usually outperform synthetic in terms of thermal properties they usually need less weight to achieve the same tog rating.

Topfloor introduces The ‘SCRIPT’ Collection.A Creative Collaboration Between RugDesigner Esti Barnes and ContemporaryCalligrapher Hassan Massoudy
smooth as
SILKM ulti-award winning rug designer and
founder of Topfloor, Esti Barnes, announces nine new rugs and wall-
hangings inspired by the work of internationally-acclaimed artist Hassan Massoudy whose boldmodern take on the ancient art of calligraphy isprized by art connoisseurs around the world.
Esti’s idea for SCRIPT was to interpretHassan’s two-dimensional artwork, into a moresubstantial and tactile form. The result capturesthe energy and dynamism of the original andreflects the blend of Middle and Far Easternstyles that have shaped Massoudy’s work. Theresult is a happy marriage of art and interiordesign.
The nine designs that form SCRIPT, eachhand-made substantially in silk, can be used asrugs or wall-hangings. The rugs are made usinga labour-intensive process, which involves each

tiny detail being hand woven, knot-by-knot tofully capture Massoudy’s distinctive style.
The rugs can be customised andmade to orderin their original colourways as limited editionpieces. Topfloor will also undertake fully bespokecommissions, normally for major contract sectorclients, taking the original as a starting point.
The designs are named PATIENCE, PEACE,DREAM, EARTH, OH FRIEND!, FIRE, WATER andROOTS. Each one is tagged with its own shortproverb or line of verse from the different culturesthat inspired Massoudy. Often in stylised Arabicscript, these can be included in the finished rugif desired.
Commenting on the collaboration, Esti Barnes, founder of Topfloor, said: ‘This has been two yearsin themaking. As a designer and having grown upin Istanbul, I have always had a fascination forthe classical forms of calligraphy. I tracked downthe best weavers we could find who could handlethe incredibly detailed work and I should say weare pleased with the result’. Massoudy added,‘When Esti first proposed her ideas I wasintrigued. I know a lot about art and calligraphybut apart from the carpets from my childhoodgrowing up in Iraq, notmuch about rugs. However,as I start to understand the very differenttechniques involved in our two crafts, I can onlysay how impressed I am with the result’.

Transforming an 11th Century Grade II listed manorhouse into a contemporary family home was all aboutrethinking the space for award winning interiordesigner, Emma Sims Hilditch
Dare toDREAMA Sims Hilditch project
P erched high above the local village andset amongst rolling lawns and 1 acrelake, this charming Dorset manor house
enjoys an outlook almost as spectacular as itshistory. The property dates back to the time of
William the Conqueror, who gifted the manor toone of his favourite noblemen. The buildingliterally has its heritage etched into the verystone, with names and dates carved into windowframes and other unlikely places. When the manor house was recently
purchased, the new owners decided the time hadcome to transform it from its manorial past into

a light-filled, contemporary home.To assist them in striking the right balance
between preserving the patina of the past whilebringing the interior up to date, the ownersturned to Cotswold based interior designer,Emma Sims Hilditch.
Emma is known for her skill in breathing newlife into listed buildings. Hers is an understatedaesthetic that introduces contemporary lifestyleelements in a manner that is sympathetic tohistory and heritage.
“Listed buildings should be more than justtime capsules for period features,” says Emma.
“They should be lived in and enjoyed in a waythat makes sense for contemporary needs butwithout jeopardising their rich character.”
For Emma, the starting point is always to stripback as much as possible in order to get a senseof the bones of a property.
“It’s important to peel away the layers ofprevious decoration to discover the building’s rawmateriality,” she explains.
In the case of this Dorset manor house, shediscovered something of an historical jigsawpuzzle; Norman and Georgian architecturepieced together with beautiful wooden beams,

original stone walls, ancient flagstone floors, large fireplaces and detailed wooden panelling.
“This is where I drew my inspiration beforelooking at how to design the interior in a waythat made sense for my client’s lifestyle and thespace,” says Emma.
The key task was to re-evaluate the existingconfiguration of the rooms, especially on theground floor. As the clients did not want a formaldining room but hankered after a large kitchenand open living area, Emma made some boldchanges.
“The goal was to redefine the space to bebetter for modern living,” says Emma. “By doingaway with the formal dining room, we were ableto relocate the drawing room into this stunningGeorgian wing of the house. We thenreconfigured the old drawing room into a largeopen-plan kitchen-dining room, which gave usfurther scope to create a beautifully functionallaundry and bootroom in what had been the oldkitchen.”
The kitchen was an especially satisfying areato design as it initially presented a number of
challenges in terms of introducing fittedfurniture to crooked walls and uneven floors.Emma’s solution was to design bespoke cabinetsthat perfectly fit the space.
“Sometimes standard cabinets just don’t dothe trick but our team has an ace up our sleevewhen it comes to knowledge and skill in furnituredesign.”
Emma also reconfigured the rooms on thefirst and second floors to create a beautifulmaster bedroom and en suite bathroom thatmake the most of the open beams. The ceilingheight is accentuated by the clever use ofwallpaper to create an airy yet intimate feeling.
The overall result is seamlessly classic yetcontemporary; an aesthetic that Emmacultivates in both her work and personal life.
“I believe that good design is not merely adiscipline but a way of life. It was a delight to beable to apply this philosophy to a building asunique as this.”

Guatemala’s markets are a complete treat for people-watching,colour and action. Chichicastenango is a wonderfully authenticmarket, still catering for the locals but is also popular withtourists searching for local treasures, such as paintedmasks andembroidery to take home as souvenirs as well as all thebeautifully woven bags, hats, toys and articles of clothing. Off thebeaten track you can find yourself almost the only outsider insome areas, such as Solola Market. The women wear the huipiles, which is part smock, part poncho
bedazzling in fiery coloured cotton cloth with the men wearingembroidered trousers. Each of the country’s ethnic groups has itsown costume and language and the markets offer a fascinatinginsight into such a passionate culture. An unforgettable experience is to then take a short flight up
the Flores to see the great jungle ruins of Tikal, where vast, pre-Christian temples protrude from the forest canopy. Tikal NationalPark is in the heart of the jungle surrounded by lush vegetationand boasts one of the major sites of Mayan civilizations. Theceremonial centre contains superb temples and palaces and thesurrounding countryside is scattered with remains of dwellings.Historically, culturally and architecturally it is breathtaking. My journey took me from here by boat to Belize. The river was
festooned with woodpeckers, herons, kingfishers, darters, egrets,
kites, iguanas and crocodiles. One of themost stunningmomentswas when trees laden with dozens of macaws seemed to take off!It was the macaws of course, in pairs taking flight whilesquawking loudly at our passing boats, their plumage all theincandescent colours of a hallucinogenic rainbow! Another oneof travel’s unforgettable moments.Belize was a treat after all the adventure and excitement
travelling across Central America. Belize boasts the world’ssecond largest Barrier Reef stretching 185miles all the way fromMexico down through the Caribbean. This is wheremy ethereal self morphs into a semi aquatic being
and becomes one with the ocean with the thrill of gliding abovethe reef wall as it drops off the caye into the deep blue beyond.Clustered to this wall a coral Garden of Eden is home to everydescribable Damsel, Wrasse, Angel and Butterfly fish. BlueSurgeonfish dodge the Parrotfish and Clownfish nestle betweenthe tentacles of its swaying soft coral home. On each of mysnorkelling sorties a posse of Curious Pipefish lead the way withSpotted Unicorn almost bumping into the glass of mymask withtheir long snouts. Suddenly a shoal of a hundred or more BlueTriggerfish appear gliding so close their tiny red fangs almosttouch the glass. In the deep against a backdrop of navy blue atapestry of Moorish Idol remain suspended as if on fine threads
from the surface. Out of the blue Eagle Rays cruise the wallclosely followed by a Grey Reef Shark. A Giant Black Moray Eelrises up from the folds of his coral den baring his jawsmenacingly. I take a wide sweep to avoid an over-sized TitanTrigger Fish which has been known to deliver a generous bite iffeeling territorial and discover a shy Lion Fish hiding in his cave.It was a joy to watch a turtle foraging for a morsel he was sodetermined to retrieve he used his front flippers to dig and hisbeak to bite at the coral hidey-hole of his prey. Eventually hesurfaced for three big gulps of air and then remained motionlesseyeballing me, seemingly as intrigued by me as I him.The coastline is dotted with hundreds of cayes offering superb
watersports, fishing and diving or simply a jolly good flop on abeautiful sandy beach to soak up some wonderful rays.

Self-professed adventuress Lucy Garbutt journeyedto East Africa in search of Africa’s safari tiara andremains enchanted forever by the ultimate ‘Out ofAfrica’ experience.
in search of the
BIG SIX
K enya is the original home of the safariand in my opinion is the mostromantic of all African countries. This
wasmy first ever experience of the continent, encounter with African wildlife and themagicfound here. It was love at first sight, smelland sound.
Kenya is a place of legend where proudwarrior tribes blend with the names ofintrepid explorers of a bygone era and wherechic colonial homesteads ensure the allure ofthe country is truly enduring.
The beauty and diversity of Kenya’slandscapes with their never-ending horizonsare one of its greatest highlights and whencombined with the extraordinary gameviewing in parks such as the Masai Mara,Samburu, Amboseli or Laikipia, it is easy tosee why the country remains so popular and
engaging. Sleeping under canvas in exclusivetented camps, staying in privately ownedbush homesteads in the remote wilderness ormerely lounging in a hammock on thepowder white beaches of the coast, Kenya’sappeal is unique.
My trip to Kenya was a whirlwind ofadventure beginning with a sensational hikethrough the equatorial forests and Jurassicflora and fauna around the foothills of MtKenya. The hike culminated in the thrill ofclimbing ‘Kirinyaga’ the mountain ofwhiteness, to the summit of Kenya’s snow-capped highest peak (5,248m or 17,058 ft).
Following the ‘high’ of the climb I travelledoverland far North towards Ethiopia andthrough the blistering heat of the vast aridnorthern desert in the hope ofpalaeontological discovery. The shimmering

mirage of the turquoise Jade Sea, better knownas Lake Turkana, sky rocketed into view throughthe haze. It was a thrill to plunge into the lake’scooling waters sending small Nile Crocodilesplunging for the depths! One of the primaryreasons for visiting this area was to fulfil ananthropological ambition to visit the cradle ofhumankind, with its abundance of hominidfossils and the site where a 1.6 million year oldcomplete Homo erectus skeleton was discovered.
An unforgettable part of the itinerary was afour day camel safari through part of the GreatRift Valley, following the sandy flow of dried upriver beds. We spent the evenings feasting ondelicious local ingredients conjured intoappetising meals over campfires and dancing tothe drum rhythms of the ‘jumping dance’ withour Masai guides and sleeping out in the openunder the stars and most magical night sky.
The anticipation of big game spotting wasmounting but first yet another of Kenya’s sightspresented itself at Lake Naivasha as everyimaginable exotic water bird, together with a pinkcloudy vision of thousands of flamingos coveredthe surface of the water.
Finally, the day of my first ever game drivehad arrived – I was at The Laikipia Plateau. TheReserve covers more than two million acres ofwilderness with habitats ranging from dustyplains to verdant grasslands and rocky hills, andwatered by two great rivers, the area offers somewonderful big game viewing all under the steelygaze of the snow-capped Mt Kenya. Withadrenalin surging at the anticipation of spottingthe ‘Big Five’, the open sided Landrover set off toroam the sweeping plains and gorges teemingwith game. The ever changing view from thevehicle brought increasing levels of excitement
as buffalo, gazelle, Grevy’s Zebra, lion, oryx, gerenuk, ostrich, hartebeest and rhino werespotted. Elephants foraged amongst denseclumps of palm and a family of wart hog friskedaround an isolated watering hole. At sunset morepredators appeared with a leopard paddingthrough the bush on a hunting mission. I hadhoped to see the endangered wild dog – butmaybe next time!
In a perfect world my next visit to Kenya willcombine three life-long dreams all of which are‘must do before I die’ experiences. The first is totravel by hot air balloon over the Masai Mara andmarvel at the wildebeest migration in full flow. The second is to head off into the wilderness onhorseback and gallop across one of the country’srugged savannahs teeming with big game. However, the third and most yearned for is tomeet the sixth member of the ‘big six’ themountain gorilla which is accessible via a shortair hop to neighbouring Rwanda for what issurely the world’s most compelling wildlifeexperience of all … to hike through the lushrainforests of the Virunga Volcanoes to track andmeet our closest cousin, the mountain gorilla, inhis natural environment.
