Driving in Spain. Basic rules

Remember - Speeding and other traffic offences are subject to on-the-spot fines in Spain.

Drive on the right: It is not difficult in a hire car because the steering wheel is on the left.

Take care when overtaking: If you are driving a UK car, allow more space between you and the carin front so you can see further down the road ahead.

Use the indicators: You risk being fined for not indicating before overtaking and again before pulling back to the nearside laneafter overtaking. Also indicate every change of direction, even if the Spanish don’t the police will stop you if you don’t.

Obey the Speed Limits:  Although you will see cars driving way above the 120km/h speed limit on major highways it’s not agood idea, especially in a car with foreign plates, as police and speed cameras have cropped up all over the place.

Do not drink and drive: Spain has strict drink driving laws, only allowing 0.5 milligrams ofalcohol per millilitre of blood – stricter than the UK, where the limit is 0.8. New drivers areeffectively forbidden to drink and drive, with a very low 0.1 mg/l limit.  If you know you are goingto be drinking out, make sure you choose a designated driver among your friends.

Wear a seatbelt: The wearing of seat belts in the front and at the back is obligatory.

General rule for priority: drivers approaching an intersection must give way to all vehicles coming from the right. At a roundabout, drivers already on the roundabout have priority over drivers approaching the roundabout.

Stop Signs: At a junction with a “Stop” sign make sure you come to a complete stop before moving on. The Policeare very active on this and will fine you on the spot for not Stopping!

Pedestrian Crossings; Are everywhere, make sure you look out for them and stop when you see pedestri-ans at them and watch for drivers in front stopping. Also the speed calming hubs that slow you down at the crossings!

Do not use electronic devices while driving: The use of cell-phones while driving is prohibited. Hands-free kits are permitted, but they are not allowed to have earpiece attachments. The adjustment of screen-based navigation systems is also prohibited whiledriving.
