PHILOSOPHY
Cosmetology is one of the various courses offered by McKinney where a student
can acquire the necessary skills and knowledge for entry-level employment in a licensed
profession. Many aspects learned in the course are also adaptable for daily living.
Examples of the aspects are written and oral skills and getting along with others.
Cosmetology is described as being an art and science. As an art, it appeals to the
esthetic needs of the individual. These needs are expressed through their personal
creativity and talent to satisfy patrons’ desires. As a science, the student is exposed to
areas such as Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics.
Given the proper education and training in a chosen trade, the individual may enjoy job
satisfaction along with financial stability. Along with the artistic and scientific
fundamentals of cosmetology, ethical practices are also emphasized. Cosmetology offers
the essentials for achieving success in the world of work.
GOALS
Prepare students for entry-level competency in the field of cosmetology.
Offer, upon completion of the program, the technical competency in the
cosmetology field so the students are able to pass the state licensing examination.

Make application and use of the underlying theories, technical information and
related occupational information to ensure sound judgments, decisions and proper
procedure involved in the occupation.
Appreciate and respect the employer – employee relationship and the awareness
of the necessity of delivering service worth the value received.
Develop a sense of personal integrity and confidence in their ability to earn their
rightful place in the community.
Practice those qualities of citizenship which will lead the way toward a happy and
productive live.

PARTICIPATION and ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS
Cosmetology class at McKinney High School is a 2-year course that meets every day.
Cosmetology I and II meet daily for 3 hours. A student can earn 3 credits per year; when
the student has 1008 clock hours, she/he will receive 500 hours for PASSING other
courses taken such as English, Math, Science, Health, etc. The grades for these classes
need to be passing at every progress reporting time to remain in the program. With this
total of 1500 hours, the student is eligible to take the 100 question written portion of the
State Board Exam for licensing in Richardson. The State Board written exam scheduling
takes 7-10 business days and the student is responsible for obtaining their clock hours in
time to schedule their written exam and receive passing (70% or higher) results back to
be able to pass the Cosmetology Program course and earn their graduation requirements.
Upon completion of 1508 hours, the student can schedule the practical portion to
complete the state exam and then be ready to begin a career in Cosmetology, and they
will receive their 1.5 credit for the senior second semester to complete their graduation
requirements.
The student is responsible for purchasing practical test kit or purchasing items to take the
test. The lab is NOT responsible for items need to take the state licensure exam.
Any student that chooses not to take the State Board exam will not complete the
Cosmetology Program and will not receive the 1.5 credits that go toward their graduation
requirements.
Regular class attendance, 3 hours per day, is necessary in Cosmetology. For
Cosmetology I and Cosmetology II, the school year is calculated by 160 days, in order
for total minimum hours of 500 to be clocked each year. When a student leaves the
classroom for any reason, the student must clock out. This includes pep rallies,
assemblies, counselor, early releases, office, ISS, OSS and DAEP. The student must
have 500 clock hours by the last Friday of the nine weeks before finals of the first year to
return the second year. Along with attendance, the student is required by the state to
complete a certain number of practical applications and hours in theory. Regular
attendance is an absolute necessity for a student to accrue 1508 hours by April / May of
the student’s last year.
When a student is absent, they miss 3 hours per day. This time must be made up as soon
as the student returns to school. Make-up time is at the Instructor’s discretion. When the
student misses 15 hours or more, or has failed any class at an IPR or RC, the student
will be dismissed at the end of that semester from McKinney Cosmetology program. No
kit or fee refunds will be given.
If the student does not make up the hours missed, his/her nine-week grade will be a
failing one, regardless of the average. A student who does not have sufficient hours at the
6
end of the semester will not receive credits. The student will have to take courses to
make up the credits needed in order to graduate should they drop or be dropped from the
program.
We request all students and/or parents to call between 7:00 -7:30 am if they will be unable
to attend class that day. In addition to instilling good work ethics in the student, this policy
is also part of our curriculum. The Cosmetology Lab phone number is 469-302-5775
