The Power of
A Letter-Sharing “The Love”
Have you been shopping lately? The Christmas decorations have left the store
shelves only to be replaced by heart shaped boxes of candy and cards. Valentine’s
Day is clearly on its way!
As we reflect on the many ways to express love, we realize it’s not just about
the roses and chocolate. In fact, one of the most precious gifts we can give to
those we love is time. Taking the time to bring your family together on a regular
basis keeps everyone current in each other’s life. Sharing a memory or the day’s
happenings can make everybody from the youngest to the wisest feel good. The
smallest things will be what you all will remember and laugh about later.
Make moments last by taking the time to jot down your feelings and thoughts
in writing. Don’t dismiss the “old fashioned” letter. A hand written note lasts
forever! A letter is truly a GIFT that can have special powers! It can be enjoyed
over and over. This Valentine’s Day share the gift of time - Time with your family; Time
with your friends; Time to write a loved one a letter - Correspondence they can
treasure forever!

Mrs. Ginnow was born and raised in Uvalde Texas. She married the love of her
life, Kenneth, a Pilot in the Air Force. They have three children. Kenneth gave his
bride the nick name “Pedie” which is what she has been known by since that day.
Pedie loves sports, especially football. She has always enjoyed birds and considers
her love of birds her favorite hobby. Pedie has a beautiful smile, a kind heart, and
is a friend to all. She recently returned froma short stay away from Franklin Park
and was missed by all while she was gone. She was elated with her welcome home
hugs and kisses and was heard to say”this is truly my home and I am glad to be
back”. Pedie brings so much joy and happiness into everyone’s lives that we too,
are glad she calls Franklin Park “home”.

Want To Eat Less Candy?Keep It Wrapped!
A study presented at a recent American Heart Association Conference (www.americanheart.org) has found that candy in wrappers might help indulgers eat less as opposed to eating unwrappedcandies.Researchersfoundthatpeoplewhoatecandies and kept the wrappers in plain sight ate only about half as many as those who did not.
Lead author Brian Wansink (author of Mindless Eating, www.mindlesseating.org)says,“Havingavisualreminderofhow much [you eat], keeps you honest and eating less. Your stomach can’t count, but your eyes can when they see the emptywrappers.”
It also helps to keep the candy in a less convenient location as opposed to a more convenient location, Wansink says. So for instance, in the office, you wouldn’t want to keep the candy on your desk where it’s easy to get to. Move it at least 5 or 10 feet away so that you have to get up and walk for your treats.

Stay Healthier With Fitness
According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), exercise and physical activity are two important things older adults can do to stay healthy. Even moderate exercise can improve the health of those who are frail or who have age-related diseases. Some seniors are concerned that physical activity or exercise may be too strenuous or may do them more harm than good.
In fact, it’s an inactive lifestyle that proves to do more harm than exercise does. Without physical activity, older people tend to grow weaker in four areas important for staying healthy and independent:• strength• balance• flexibility• endurance
Staying active does the body and the mind a world of good. Find exercise and activities that you enjoy and you’ll be able to stick with it and improve your quality of life.

February is American Heart Month What You Need To Know
The chance of developing coronary heart disease can be reduced by taking steps to prevent and control factors that put people at greater risk. Additionally, knowing the signs and symptoms of heart attack are crucial to achieving the most positive outcomes after having a heart attack. People who have survived a heart attack can also work to reduce their risk of another heart attack or a stroke in the future.

Mardi Gras - February 21Mardi Gras isFrenchfor“FatTuesday.”Itwasnamedthisbecauseall butter and fats had to be used up by Shrove Tuesday, the day
before the start of Lent. Carnival time includes the period between EpiphanyorTwelfthNight(12daysafterChristmas),January6 and Shrove Tuesday (it is sometimes referred to as the Mardi Grasseason). It iscelebratedespecially inNewOrleans(and
other Louisiana cities), Mobile, Alabama and certain Mississippi and Florida cities.

February is American Heart Month
Heart disease is the No. 1 cause of death in the United States. Reduce your risk factors by knowing the warning signs, and how to respond quickly and properly if warning signs occur.
Heart Attack Warning SignsSome heart attacks are sudden and intense, where no one
doubts what’s happening. But most heart attacks start slowly, with mild pain or discomfort. Often people affected aren’t sure what’s wrong and wait too long before getting help.
Here are signs that can mean a heart attack is happening:
• Chestdiscomfort.Mostheartattacksinvolvediscomfortinthe center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or that goes away and comes back.
• Discomfortinotherareasoftheupperbodyincludingpainor discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach.
• Shortnessofbreathwithorwithoutchestdiscomfort.
• Othersignsmayincludebreakingoutinacoldsweat,nauseaor lightheadedness
Learn the signs and remember: Even if you’re not sure it’s a heart attack, call 9-1-1 immediately. Minutes matter and fast action can save lives — even your own.
Calling 9-1-1 is almost always the fastest way to get lifesaving treatment since emergency medical services (EMS) staff can begin treatment when they arrive — up to an hour sooner than if someone gets to the hospital by car.
Time For Spring? Or More Winter? Ask The
GroundhogEveryone knows that on Feb. 2, a groundhog
coming out of its burrow to look for its shadow will either signal an early end to winter or predict another six weeks of snow and cold weather. The science may not be accurate, but Groundhog Day has become a major event in many U.S. towns and cities.
How did it start? Many historians believe that Groundhog Day is related to Candlemas Day, a medieval Christian celebration that falls on Feb. 2. An old sailor’s saying from English lore states:
If Candlemas Day is clear and bright, winter will have another bite.
If Candlemas Day brings cloud and rain, winter is gone and will not come again.
Another possible source for the belief may be the fact that
the first official day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere’s western lands comes almost seven weeks after Feb. 2, while under the early Julian calendar, the spring equinox fell
on March 16—exactly six weeks after Feb. 2.
Groundhog Day may reflect the confusion created by dueling calendars.
Time For A Coffee Intervention?
Are you drinking your share of coffee? According to data compiled by the website FreeInsuranceQuotes.net, Americans, Canadians, and British residents consume an average of 200 mgs of caffeine a day (about eight cups), mostly from coffee and tea. The worldwide average daily consumption is just 76 mgs. But Scandinavians have us beat: They drink an average of 400 mgs a day (probably because of the long winters).
Caffeine, it should be noted, can take up residence in your system for up to seven hours, and it has been linked to such health problems as insomnia, breathing problems, and dizziness.
Cell Phones Don’t Give Us The Whole Story
“Can you hear me now?” may be more than a cell phone company slogan. Research by the Acoustical Society of America indicates that one reason cell phone chats can be so frustrating is that our phones cut out the voice’s higher frequencies.
The energy of the human voice is measured in hertz. Most of the information in our voices is transmitted at frequencies below 5,000 hertz, leading scientists to believe that higher frequencies aren’t really necessary to understanding. Most cell phones transmit sound at 3,500 hertz and below, but tests of recordings that filtered out any sonic information below 5,000 hertz found that people pick up a significant amount of sound in that higher range. Thus, our brains have to work harder to understand information that doesn’t include higher-pitched sound. Time for an upgrade?

The Origins And Essentials Of Black
History MonthFebruary is Black History Month, honoring the
achievements and contributions of African-Americans to U.S. history. It has roots in “Negro History Week,” established in 1926 by Dr. Carter G. Woodson, the second black man to receive a degree from Harvard University.
Together with Rev. Jesse E. Moorland, Woodson cofounded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History in 1915, an organization dedicated to researching and promoting achievements by African-Americans.
Woodson designated “Negro History Week” as the second week of February to coincide with the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln.
President Gerald Ford off icial ly proclaimed February as “Black History Month” in 1976, and every U.S. president since then has done so, too.
The organization founded by Woodson and Moorland, now known as the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, continues to promote, preserve, and research the history and culture of African-Americans year-round.
Ash WednesdayFebruary 22, 2012
In the Western Christian calendar, Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent and occurs forty days before Easter (excluding Sundays). It falls on a different date each year, because it is dependent on the date of Easter; it can occur as early as February 4 or as late as March 10.
Ash Wednesday gets it’s name from the practice of placing ashes on the foreheads of the faithful as a sign of repentance. The ashes used are gathered after the Palm Crosses from the previous year’s Palm Sunday are burned. In the liturgical practice of some churches, the ashes are mixed with the Oil of the Catechumens (one of the sacred oils used to anoint those about to be baptized), though some churches use ordinary oil. This paste is used by the clergyman who presides at the service to make the sign of the cross, first upon his own forehead and then on each of those present who kneel before him at the altar rail. As he does so, he recites the words: “Remember (O man) that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”

Spin Failure Onto A Constructive Path
Failure can be one more step on your road to success—you just have to turn it around in a positive direction. Here are some creative ways to view failure:
• Failure can push you harder to succeed.
• Failure can strengthen your determination to overcome obstacles.
• Failure can make you braver in the face of opposition.
• Failure can help you learn what you need to do in order to succeed.
• Failure can teach you what your limitations are—and your strengths.
• Failure can encourage you to change your strategy.
Life is the first gift, Love is the second, and
Understanding the third.—Marge Piercy

The Power of A Letter-Sharing “The Love”
Have you been shopping lately? The Christmas decorations have left the store shelves only to be replaced by heart shaped boxes of candy and cards. Valentine’s Day is clearly on its way!
As we reflect on the many ways to express love, we realize it’s not just about the roses and chocolate. In fact, one of the most precious gifts we can give to those we love is time. Taking the time to bring your family together on a regular basis keeps everyone current in each other’s life. Sharing a memory or the day’s happenings can make everybody from the youngest to the wisest feel good. The smallest things will be what you all will remember and laugh about later.
Make moments last by taking the time to jot down your feelings and thoughts in writing. Don’t dismiss the “old fashioned” letter. A hand written note lasts forever! A letter is truly a GIFT that can have special powers! It can be enjoyed over and over.
This Valentine’s Day share the gift of time - Time with your family; Time with your friends; Time to write a loved one a letter - Correspondence they can treasure forever!
Resident SpotlightMrs. Ginnow was born and raised in Uvalde Texas. She married the love of her
life, Kenneth, a Pilot in the Air Force. They have three children. Kenneth gave his bride the nick name “Pedie” which is what she has been known by since that day.Pedie loves sports, especially football. She has always enjoyed birds and considers her love of birds her favorite hobby. Pedie has a beautiful smile, a kind heart, and is a friend to all. She recently returned froma short stay away from Franklin Park and was missed by all while she was gone. She was elated with her welcome home hugs and kisses and was heard to say”this is truly my home and I am glad to be back”. Pedie brings so much joy and happiness into everyone’s lives that we too, are glad she calls Franklin Park “home”.

Use It Or Lose It!We can’t go against our genes, but there are certain things we
can do when it comes to keeping our brain thinking. Cognitive stimulation can HELP prevent memory loss.1. Turn off the TV and get that brain back in shape! The
television is a nice companion, but it doesn’t do much for cognitive (or brain) stimulation- it doesn’t make you think.
2. Crossword puzzles are your friends! Everyday you should try to do a crossword puzzle to help build and retain vocabulary and general knowledge.
3. Another easy but brain-stimulating game is the name (or word) game. Take a sheet of paper and write your full name (first, middle, maiden, last) or a word (or group of words). Start with the first letter and try to form as many words with it as possible (you must use at least four letters for each word - three letter words don’t count).
4. Use your long term memory. The “past game” triggers your long term (and short term) memory. Start with the letter “A” and think of as many people as you can who have been a part of your life with the first name of “A.” Go down the alphabet. It’s nice to think back and remember friends and good times.
Life is the first gift, Love is the second, and
Understanding the third.—Marge Piercy
