From the Editor’s DeskThe month of September signals a return to the community for some Corte Bella residents—and sadly this month, a departure

(in differing ways) for some others.

Dan Hammel and Roberta Rials are two residents who, for years, lent their time and talents to the Corte Bella community, helping to drive the overwhelming success of countless programs and print publications.

Working behind the lens of his SLR camera, Dan Hammel helped convey Corte Bella’s true

beauty throughout numerous marketing materials and on the pages of this very magazine. Dan, also, did much of the heavy lifting on popular magazine segments such as Cool Cars, Resident Profiles, and Monsoon Madness. In just a few weeks, Dan will be relocating from Corte Bella, north, to cooler pastures.

But for now, this month’s issue, like others before it, proudly showcases Dan’s work on the cover of this magazine and on page 12-13.

Backed by a chorus of volunteers, Roberta Rials planned HOA Events that covered dinners, dances, holiday celebrations, health lectures, Farmer’s Markets, and much more. Poll the masses and you’ll hear echoed a single sentiment: Roberta had her finger on the pulse of the community. Her absence leaves the new HOA Events Group to continue Corte Bella’s storied tradition of terrific events planning. The new group has been hard at work and their upcoming events can be found detailed on page 11.

A heartfelt ‘thank you’ to both Dan and Roberta for everything they have done.

Finally, the CB Times returns to its regular monthly schedule, and can next be expected around the first of October, 2013.

In the Loop: Helpful TipsThis month’s column comes with a little bit of a

backstory. I was on the way to the airport to pick someone up when my GPS directed me to get off the 101 South. I continued south one more exit and got off, not knowing what was going on.

I called someone who had access to a computer and they looked up www.az511.com and zeroed in

on Maricopa County where they found there was an incident on the 10 eastbound and it was completely closed. An individual was trying to elude the police and had run into traffic where he was hit by a car. All the traffic cameras on Route 10 can be accessed from this site and the backup getting off probably extended for the better part of a mile.

To make a long story short, I detoured to the 17, took it south and arrived at the airport about fifteen minutes late.

The point of the story is that I should have used the 511 system on the computer before I left to go to the airport. Closures, traffic

backups and construction are all visible on a map and I could have planned a different route in advance. You can call 511 on the phone and you will get an abbreviated version of what is on the web site.

The 511 system was started by the federal government in 2001 to consolidate a number of phone numbers and it now covers most of the major roads in the United States. If you are taking a trip you may want to take a quick look at the computer before departing in the future just to avoid any unnecessary surprises. You may find it on the web, directly, at http://www.az511.com/adot/files/511.

The other tip for the month involves your washing machine. The hoses on these machines are not designed to withstand constant water pressure and may burst on occasion. I had been involved in water damage restoration during my career and washing machine hoses rank high on the scale of the damage that can be created.

If you can reach the water shut off valve, turn off the water when the wash cycle is complete. I, myself, will never leave the house before the cycle is completed just to avoid any potential problems. I had a client who once had over $100,000 worth of damage from one such incident.

Kudos KornerCorte Bella Country Club is proud to recognize those volunteers who accept the responsibility and give freely of their time and talent to protect and enhance our community’s life style. And, as part of this program, the efforts of new volunteers will be highlighted monthly in a new column dubbed, Kudos Korner.

• Gary Bair and Dan Drogowski both applied for and were selected as volunteers for the Buildings and Grounds Committee (B&GC). While we are not building a nuclear

facility anytime soon, Gary’s nuclear engineering background provides added project discipline to the B&GC. Dan has also been with the NASC for several years. He heeded the call and plans to work both Committees.

• Dave Ornstein stepped forward to fill the void when we lost our Classified’s Web Administrator in June. He is helping the HOA temporarily until we can get a “permanent” volunteer.

Corte Bella’s

The Arizona Professional Photographers Association (AZPPA) hosts competitions for outstanding professional photography each year. Awards and accolades are presented for prints that meet criteria including Impact, Print Quality, Presentation, Originality, and more. Prints are judged by a panel of experienced judges from all over the country.

Corte Bella’s own Dan Hammel, longtime CB Times contributing photographer and editorial strategist, was awarded Master Commercial Photographer of the Year in 2013, with two second place showings—both in Master Illustrative Divisions. Dan also took home the Master Photographer of the Year honors (in all categories) in 2004.

Displayed throughout this photo spread are several examples of Dan’s head-turning work.

Event Recap: July 4th Celebration

At Corte Bella’s recent 4th of July celebration, the fireworks were present not in the sky, but on the dance floor. Thanks to an expected sell-out crowd and the music of Rich Mancini, the residents and guests of Corte Bella danced all night. Red, White and Blue, the night’s theme colors, were visible at every turn, and made the celebration of our nation’s birthday even more special. The outstanding decorating skills of Cathey Collins and Larry Leighton are greatly appreciated.

Rich Mancini incorporated a few patriotic songs to highlight an event that helped recognize the military veterans of Corte Bella, but the real stars of the evening were the dancers—and we have quite a few talented dancers. Even the men took the floor to display their moves to rock and roll hits from days past, both fast and slow.

Kudos to Mary Luparello and her team of talented volunteers who did a fantastic job. Thanks, too, to Corte Bella Army veteran Larry Leighton, who served as master of ceremonies, and showed off some “spiffy” dance moves!

Chef Dan prepared a wonderful buffet of specialties and Fred Hernandez and his serving/bar tendering staff, as usual, succeeded in making it a memorable event. This total team effort ensured everyone had an outstanding evening. Thanks to all for a job well done!

Events Group Gathers to Plan for ‘13-‘14An astounding 40 residents, each of whom has a multitude of talents and experience, attended our first meeting on July 10, and committed to planning and presenting a magnificent calendar of events. Because of the amazing response, we have established a wait list to join the group. Please contact the HOA office, if interested.

Residents may look forward to renewing friendships and developing new ones at many exciting events, including old favorites and fabulous new surprises. We are ready to “rock and roll!”

Thanks to Lynda Erickson, HOA General Manager, Executive Chef Dan Haywood, and Fred Hernandez, Food, Beverage and Catering Manager, for making our first meeting a resounding success. We also greatly appreciate the ongoing support of our Board of Directors and the HOA staff. We would like to thank outgoing Coordinator Roberta Rials and her volunteer team for their excellent performance in providing entertainment for our community over the past four years. They established a foundation upon which we will continue grow.

Computer Club ConversionCongratulations to Jim Williams on his appointment to President of the Corte Bella Board of Directors! Jim’s new role created the need for someone to “catch the baton” and head up the Corte Bella Computer Club.

As luck would have it, I attended Jim’s last club meeting and was pleased to catch that baton. While I’m new to Corte Bella, I’m not new to computer technology. I’ve been handling all types of computer technology professionally for 35+ years. As a computer consultant with a wide range of expertise, I knew I could hit the ground running.

Jim left some big shoes to fill, which I am very honored to do. And, as part of the transition, I have taken some work off Jim’s plate by creating a new Computer Club website. On April 15, 2013 a revamped “CorteBellaClub.org” went live. The new website uses state-of-the art content management and open source software technologies. Its design is “responsive” to support modern devices such as smartphones and tablets.

Fortunately for me, I’ve had the luxury of the summer break to plan some interesting topics for club meetings. Here’s a taste of things to come:

• Innovative Technologies – It’s clear that computer desktops and laptops are being exchanged for devices like tablets and smartphones. Our recent survey showed that our CB community follows this trend. With new devices come a lot of new concepts, opportunities, and challenges. We’ll explore in detail how to make the best use of the latest technologies.

• “Show and Tell” – Admit it. It’s fun to get your hands on high-tech “gizmos.” My business partnerships allow us to source the most advanced implements out there. Expect visits from folks like Todd “Mr. Gadget” Patterson of USitek, who will demonstrate cutting-edge products chosen because of their potential interest to members of our community.

Expediting Guest Check-in at Front Gate

Dear Corte Bella Residents,

A little over three years ago we purchased and installed a new computer software package that was designed to give you the ability to authorize your visitors on-line, and allow the guards at the gate to see your authorizations. The system enables the guards to quickly locate pre-authorized visitors on a computer at the gate. When a visitor cannot be found as being pre-authorized, the guard is supposed to call the resident to be visited in an attempt to get an authorization by phone.

This is where the system has faltered. The system will work well as long as most of our visitors are pre-authorized. When phone calls need to be made, significant time is added to the amount of time needed to process visitors, such that traffic backups result.

The biggest problems that we have in getting the visitor entry system to work as it was intended are the following:

1. Only 35% of residents have registered themselves in the system

2. Less than half of our residents have used the system to pre-authorize their visitors

3. Not a huge problem, but 12% of residents do not have a phone number in the system where they can be called

If you are part of the 65% who have not registered in the system, we ask that you do so. You can do it on-line by using your computer’s browser. Go to www.cortebella.org and click on the Register Here link on the upper right side of the login page. After clicking on this link, a page will come up where you will have to type in the following information

• Your name (Last Name, First Name)• Your Corte Bella address (eg. 54321

N Sola Dr—no periods after N or Dr)• Your email address• A user ID that you would like to use

to login to the system• A password that you would like to

use to login• Retype the password for confirmation

Note: You can also register from our community website, www.cortebella.net. After logging onto the Association’s official website, click on HOA at the drop down menu, then on Resident & Visitor Management, and then follow the procedure outlined above.

Once you register in the system and establish an ability to login to the system, you will find that you have an ability to enter the visitors that you wish to be authorized entry. You will find that visitors are classified as frequent, recurring or one-time. In addition, you will be able to see the personal information that exists for you in the system. It is requested that any missing or erroneous information be added or corrected through the HOA Office.

Please help make the gate entry system work. It will provide everyone with a safer and more secure community. Your cooperation in this matter will be greatly appreciated.

Also, please note: Every resident family when they first joined the Corte Bella Country Club was assigned a four-digit gate code that can be used to open our gates. If a resident at some point in time is caught without a gate opening device, this 4-digit code can be used to open our front gates. One must drive through the guest entrance lane up to the telephone call box that has a keypad on it. From this keypad you can open the gates by entering the pound sign and then your 4-digit code (# + NNNN). If you do not remember what your 4-digit code is, contact the HOA Office. The office has the code in their records and can refresh your memory after you properly identify yourself. Know your code and please do not give it out to others.

Pickleball NewsThe community of Corte Bella now has eight—say that again—eight pickleball courts! Tennis Court 5, next to the original four pickleball courts has been striped with four additional pickleball courts. And, going forward, Court 5 will be shared between the Pickleball Club and the Tennis Club.

Just as a reminder, the Pickleball Club will have use of pickleball courts 5, 6, 7 and 8 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays in January/February, May/June, and September/October. In addition, we will have use of the additional courts on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays in March/April, July/August, and in November/December. The courts are ready to go, as they have been outfitted with portable net posts, nets, and additional netting to separate courts 5 and 6 from 7 and 8.

In addition, in order to manage the use of all courts, a new online reservation system is being put in place for all court reservations. David Jolovitz, our Fitness and Spa Manager, will be the administrator. Members of each club, as well as residents/non-members, will be able to go online to see when courts are available to be reserved. Additional details will soon be communicated when the system is up and running.

By the time this issue of the Times goes to print, we can expect the summer heat to begin to subside and we can look forward to the return of our snowbird members and seasonal residents. So, it’s time to strike up our plans for Fall and Winter.

First off, we have a clinic scheduled for Monday evening, September 16, at 7:00 P.M. All newer, less experienced, members, as well as any non-member residents, are welcome to join in to learn about this fabulous game. You don’t need any gear… (continued on next page)

Spotlight On: Line Dancing Club & ClassesThis fall, Corte Bella looks to host line dancing classes in the Movement Studio of the fitness center. Classes will be held on Tuesdays from 12:15 to 1:15 PM.

What is Line Dancing?

Line dancing is a popular style of dance in which people dance across in a single or multiple lines. The dance is supported by all types of music. Steps are repeated so it’s relatively easy to learn. It’s known to be an informal and relaxed style of gliding around the dance floor. It is individualistic and yet a group dance.

Even though the heat does impact some of our play during the summer, there is still a lot of pickleball being played on our courts. Member play begins at 7:00 A.M. on Fridays and Saturdays, and there are also many that are playing Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 7:00 P.M., as well as Sunday mornings at 7:00 A.M.

If you are a beginner and want to learn about the game, stop by any time to learn more about it from any of our members. Played before? You can jump right in. If you’d like to become a full member of the club, the following is included in your membership fee:

CULINARY

We’d like to mark the end of summer by sincerely thanking all of our residents (and their guests) for frequenting the restaurant during the past hot, hot summer season. Looking forward to the autumn “cool down,” the Anacapa Restaurant has different events planned, including new menus starting in October, an updated wine list, as well as specialty menu days and community events. First up we will be having a Labor Day BBQ to kick off the

end of summer on Sunday, September 1. This has always been a very popular event, with a dinner

buffet, music and dancing in the Social Hall.

Another event we always look forward to is our Anacapa Anniversary Party. This event, held on Monday, October 7, is an appreciation night for all of our residents.

We will be having food stations with different tasty items that we feature at the Anacapa. There

will be a DJ and dancing for those who want to shake a leg. We have the entertainment, food, and all the trimmings covered in one low cost: just $15 per person. All who have attended have found the event to be a great time and a chance for new and existing residents to meet each other, meet our staff, catch up with friends, have great food and fun drink specials, and enjoy a great Corte Bella experience.

We will also be starting our Cooking Demo series again, coming up in October, where we will feature three distinct flavors—

a European Tour, if you will: French, Greek, and the Northern States, Sweden and Denmark. The Demonstrations are on the first Friday of the month in October, November, and December.

The first Cooking Demo will be held on Friday, October 4. We will have the full series of menus posted soon, so be watching for it. We always have fun with these, as it gives me a chance to interact with our guests, talk about food and teach some culinary techniques. The Demonstration includes a great 3 course lunch of all the foods featured as well for a price of $36, inclusive. Tickets sell quickly, so mark your calendars and expect tickets to go on sale shortly at the Fitness Desk.

On Wednesday, October 16, we will be hosting our annual Oktoberfest Dinner Buffet in the restaurant and Social Hall. This is another great event with German music, authentic German cuisine and special beers available. Please make your reservations with the restaurant for this fun event by calling (623) 455-9045.

Last in October, we will be featuring the British Invasion Concert in the Social Hall on Sunday, October 27, which will be accompanied by the Anacapa’s British Countryside Buffet featuring grilled sausages, Empire roasted chicken with curry potatoes, mulligatawny soup, beef and potato pie, apple crumble, rhubarb fool and other tasty British offerings. The buffet will be open to the public, but will be specially priced for concert attendees, so make your reservations as soon as you can.

For Custard• 2 Cups Heavy Cream• ½ Cups Sugar• 1 tsp Almond Extract• 1 tsp Vanilla Extract • 5 Egg Yolks• 1 pint Fresh raspberries• 5 8 oz crème brulee dishes

Preparation

• Preheat oven to 325°F. Place the 5 4-inch-diameter fluted flan dishes or flan cups in a baking pan that will fill with water halfway up the

sides of the flan dishes without spilling over.

• Pour cream, sugar and vanilla extract in a medium saucepan.

• Stir over medium heat until sugar dissolves and mixture comes to simmer. Remove from heat and let sit 10 minutes to infuse flavors.

• Whisk yolks in medium size bowl until well blended. Slowly, gradually whisk in hot cream mixture just to blend.

• Strain through a fine sieve and place in large pouring vessel.

• Divide custard evenly among Brulee dishes. Pour enough hot water into holding pans to come halfway up the outside of filled brulee dishes.

• Drop a few fresh Raspberries into each dish. Carefully transfer pans to oven.

•Bakeinovenonmiddlerackuntilalmostsetincenterwhenpans are gently shaken, about 30 - 35 minutes for

fluted flan dishes. There should be no jello-like shake to the Brulee, it should be firm.

•Usingmetalspatula,transfercustards in dishes to work surface;

cool 30 minutes. Chill at least 3 hours and up to 2 days.

• To serve, generously sprinkle top of brulee with granulated sugar, and caramelize lightly with a torchiere, or under a broiler at 500 degrees for a few minutes until dark caramel

color. Let set for 5 minutes to cool and serve.
