From the Editor’s DeskThere is activity scattered within our spring air in all directions that is budding and blooming with color and life.

Locally, there is much to do, including a plentiful array of HOA events (pg. 10-11), spirited sports club activities (pg. 17-18), and

scenic wonders (all over Arizona) that are the absolute envy of the other states in the Union. With all

that’s available, it’s no wonder why Valley residents seem to travel with a little “spring” in their steps this time of year.

But, before making plans to enjoy the remarkable weather, take some time to

read this month’s Times. In this issue, you’ll find our recurring Cool Cars feature that showcases Corte Bella resident Dan Hammel’s photographic prowess as he artfully captures the strength and beauty of a 400-horsepower ‘56 Ford F100 (pg. 12).

Read the story of Ira Gedan, a Corte Bella resident, which will inspire you to try and achieve new things (pg. 16).

Discover the 2013 Board of Directors election results below and, finally, read about what makes Corte Bella “Five Times the Community” on page 13.

With the hope that you find as much enjoyment in this month’s issue as you do spending time in the beautiful spring weather, I wish you “good reading!”

April is a busy time of year not only at Corte Bella, but far beyond its private gates.

Cool Cars of Corte Bella“I felt there was an opening in our garage that just had to be filled.”Making a welcome reappearance to the Times’ monthly Cool Cars feature is Corte Bella resident Will Myers. No stranger to fast, custom vehicles, Will follows up his first entry — a 1953 Studebaker (May, 2012) — with a real show-stopping truck.

Will purchased the 1956 Ford F-100 shortly after selling the highly-acclaimed Studebaker.

“After selling our nice 1953 Studebaker that had received many awards around the country, including Street Rodder Magazine’s Top 10 award,” Will said, “I felt there was an opening in our garage that just had to be filled.”

“I started looking on the internet for a 1953 to 1956 Ford F-100 truck; I built one back in the early ‘90s and really enjoyed driving it. I thought it would be nice to get one completely built this time. I didn’t want to do most of the work myself.”

Will found the perfect pickup in Wichita, Kansas, as it came complete with an updated chassis, power windows and power steering, air conditioning, and a long list of other upgrades. Will then recently personalized the vehicle by adding a new set of tires and rims that complement the car’s already muscular demeanor.

“I plan on driving the truck almost every day that it doesn’t rain,” Will grinned, perhaps thinking about the truck’s 400-plus horsepower engine.

“You’ve got to drive them to enjoy them.”

Deemed NewsworthyFirst founded in 1881, the American Association of University Women (AAUW) is open to all women graduates who hold an Associates or higher degree from a regionally accredited college or university. AAUW is a powerful advocate for equity in education impacting the lives of women and girls. The general branch meetings of the local branch, Northwest Valley Branch of Arizona, are at 9:00 AM, the third Thursday morning of each month, at the SCW Foundation Building, 14465 W.R.H. Johnson Blvd. unless otherwise indicated. Beside the informative local meetings, there are many special interest groups to provide sociability in the promotion of AAUW’s life-long educational goals. You may contact Molly Divine, at (503) 460-7103, or at [email protected], for more information.

Residents: If you have news of any special celebrations or occasions, mournful losses, or local happenings that may be “Deemed Newsworthy”, let us know by emailing the editor at [email protected].

We live in a beautiful “community.” In fact, Corte Bella is ‘Five Times a Community.’ As residents we are entwined in five ways. That’s what makes our community so unusual. First, we are a group of people living in the same locality under the same ‘government’/HOA. Although an HOA is really a quasi-government, it does provide some services, rules, and policy to preserve the intended lifestyle, amenities, and common areas.

Secondly, we live in the same district or locality. As a gated community, we are even more closely tied than other communities such as Sun City West or Sun City Grand. Since walls and two gates surround us we have more likelihood of running into other members of our community on a daily basis. We see our neighbors at various amenities: the pool, the fitness center, the spa, the restaurant, the golf club, walking the ‘loop’. Seeing each other often stimulates closeness. Smiles work wonders.

Thirdly, we are a group of people having a common interest — active adult. To that end we support the fitness center, spa, pool, restaurant, social events, tennis, pickleball, golf and many other activities. Even though everyone may not use all the offered amenities, they support them because they chose to purchase a home where these activities were offered. It’s a property-value enhancer to have access to all these things. It adds beauty, charm and openness to our community. How can that be bad?

Fourthly, we are a group viewed as a distinct segment of society. Most of us are 55-plus. We are a segment of the population of America that is growing larger each day as baby boomers

age. True, we have some 55 and under, and some 55++, but nevertheless we are lumped into the 55+ segment. Judging by activities I’ve attended, 55+/-/++ is a great place to be!

Fifthly, we share similar interests. We chose Corte Bella because of the lifestyle it offers: private, active, 55-plus, amenities, beauty, country club atmosphere, etc. To make our community prosper we should support all the offerings CB has. Even if there are some offerings that you don’t take advantage of — they are part of the ambience of CB! As time goes by we don’t want to let our lifestyle offerings deteriorate. Think home value again!

So there you have it. We are five times a community. We’re all in this together!

Event Recap: The Magic of ManilowOn February 24, 2013, Corte Bella’s Social Hall was transformed into an upscale Las Vegas Nightclub theater that featured none other than Terry Davies performing the music of one of the bestselling artists of our time.

The artist is polarizing: you either like him or you don’t. Yet, even if you think you don’t, you really do. I’m speaking of Barry Manilow.

The Magic of Manilow is a huge production by TAD Management that includes a stellar group of musicians, featuring three female and one male vocalist, a trumpet, drummer, sax, two guitarists, and of course, Terry on the piano. It was amazing that all that fit into our Social Hall, and the sold out crowd enjoyed every minute of it.

The show opened with a video clip of some “regular” guys discussing whether or not they liked the music of Manilow. Some of Manilow’s critics deemed his music to be a collection of wimpy ballads. But five of Barry’s albums were on the best-selling charts in the 70’s, a feat equaled only by Sinatra, Springsteen, and Johnny Mathis.

His memorable hits include “Mandy”, “I Write the Songs” and “Copacabana”. Manilow fans appreciate his style as a writer,

producer and composer. The Corte Bella audience was no exception. They tapped their feet, and Terry invited a member of the audience to sing along with him to “Can’t Smile Without You”. (Go ahead, sing it. You know you can!)

The room was rocking with hit after hit such as the opening medley of “It’s a Miracle” and “New York City Rhythm”. The audience applauded heartily at the end of the show, and commented that this had to be one of the best shows presented here by TAD and the CB Event Volunteers… It certainly was the biggest!

A reminder: The CB Event Volunteers are at it again! They have teamed up with the Anacapa Restaurant on Sunday, April 28 to bring you the annual Summer Getaway party and Island Buffet, with island music by Sean Mireau and the Volcano Island Band. Reservations for this special event are highly recommended.

HEALTH & FITNESS

You’re Never Too OldA few weeks ago, on a sunny March day, Corte Bella residents Gail and Stan Peskin were settling into their seats at the Camelback Ranch baseball stadium. They had season tickets to all of the Chicago White Sox’s spring training games. The game was about to begin and a man holding a microphone walked onto the field.

“Ladies and gentleman”, the announcer over the loud speaker began, “please rise and remove your caps for the singing of our national anthem. Performing the anthem today is Ira Gedan.”

The Peskins were shocked. They had heard a lot of singers sing at baseball games, but this was the first time they recognized the name of the singer. Ira Gedan was their friend and a Corte Bella neighbor. What was he doing out on the field getting ready to sing?

How Ira Gedan reached the point of standing behind home plate on the baseball diamond at a Major League Baseball game, singing the Star Spangled Banner to a crowd of 5,000+ people is an inspiring story with the moral that teaches us that you are never too old.

In 2006, Ira and his wife Laurel retired to Corte Bella after Ira had spent his career as a nationally-recognized motivational speaker. For 38 years, he traveled around the U.S. and internationally, conducting motivational and sales seminars. He was comfortable speaking before large audiences, but never before sang to them.

About three years ago, the Gedans attended a karaoke night at the Corte Bella Golf Club. They, along with all the other participants, sang their hearts out — knowing full well that they weren’t any good; enthusiastic, yes, but not very good. On the way home, they talked about what an enjoyable night it was, but lamented that they really didn’t know what they were doing. “Why don’t we take singing lessons?” Laurel asked. “Maybe we can learn something new.”

They two began taking vocal lessons at a music studio in Surprise. Ira, who has the naturally good voice of a public speaker, progressed very quickly. Then, last January, his vocal teacher suggested he submit an audition tape to the Major League Baseball spring training stadiums to sing the Star Spangled Banner. Ira had never thought about something like this. They had attended a lot of sports games, but never considered how the people who sang the National Anthem actually got there.

Ira and his teacher made the audition tape and submitted it. A few weeks later an email arrived from Major League Baseball. “Congratulations,” the note read, “you are invited to sing the national anthem at an upcoming spring training game at Camelback Ranch Stadium.” March 11 was the agreed-upon date.

Whoa! It’s one thing to sing at the music studio in front of your voice teacher. It’s another thing entirely to be standing in front of a crowd in a baseball stadium, singing without any musical back-up.

“I was very excited that they selected me”, Ira said, “but honestly I think I’m the oldest person they’ve ever had singing in the stadium.”

“And”, he added laughing, “when I retired I had a lot of things I wanted to do. But I never, ever visualized myself singing at a baseball stadium. That just wasn’t on my list. I like to sing but I only sing to myself in the house. My wife and I just look at each other and laugh at what’s happened.”

His teacher gave him a lot of advice. He told him to practice outdoors because it’s much different singing outside than it is singing inside. He told him the song had to be 90 seconds long, so Laurel timed all his rehearsals and that the echo of the P.A. system can be very disconcerting, so try to ignore the delayed sound of his own voice. And finally, he told him the song “wasn’t about him” but was a tribute to the men and women who had fought for our country and to the veterans sitting in the bleachers.

Game day arrived. About 20 friends from Corte Bella, those who had anticipated his performance, stood up and removed their hats, and cheered loudly when Ira’s name was announced. He sang it exactly as he had rehearsed it.

Ira’s voice swelled up through the bleachers. Upon the song’s completion, a feeling of accomplishment and relief swept over him.

Walking off the field, one of the ball players (who had probably heard the song 1,000 times) called out “Hey man, that was beautiful. You did a great job.” A woman in the stands came up and said “Thank you for singing the song like it was written. You actually brought tears to my eyes.” Another man came up and said, “You’re a professional singer, aren’t you? What do you do – sing at stadiums all over?”

Ira said that he viewed these compliments as affirmation that you’re never too old to try something new.

Ira is scheduled to sing the Star Spangled Banner at two upcoming baseball games at Arizona State University.

HEALTH & FITNESS

How Does Tennis Impact Our Environment, You Might Wonder? Many of our leading companies such as Head, Wilson, and Prince are becoming more eco-friendly by pairing up with other resources to protect the rainforests. After all, we use tennis balls, tennis racquets, strings, etc. on a regular basis.

For instance, did you know? Head announced in September a partnership with the global environmental charity Cool Earth, which fights climate change by protecting endangered rainforests? Under this agreement, Head will purchase credits that will go to helping preserve rainforests, which lock up atmospheric carbon in their vegetation to the tune of 150 tons of carbon per half-acre.

Wilson’s ultimate goal is to use 100 percent recyclable materials for its ball cans, string and grip packaging though certain challenges persist, like finding recyclable material strong enough to keep the can’s structural integrity and maintain the appropriate amount of pressure. And Prince’s main focus is to gather more information on the sporting industry’s impact on the environment and developing a consensus on what to do.

We as tennis players all join to support those companies who pledge to keep our environment eco-friendly, and by doing so, are bettering the future of our children (and their children), enabling them to be able to enjoy a beautiful, future environment.

We are fortunate to have these beautiful facilities in Corte Bella because, we all work together to maintain them. As Vicki Faaborg, captain of Corte Bella’s 3.0 tennis team shares her experience this season: “This is the third year that Corte Bella has been represented by a 3.0 tennis team in the West Valley Women’s Senior Tennis League. I received so many compliments on the condition of our courts and our wonderful restaurant, The Anacapa!”

Let’s keep it up.

Golf Club Champions CrownedThe Corte Bella Ladies 18 Hole Golf Association (WGA) staged their annual Ladies Club Championship event over three days on February 11, 12 and 19. The weather proved to be a particular challenge on day one, with winds and a bit of rain.

The three-day event always brings out a strong field of competitors from the 116-member Association. This year, Maggie McMurtrey was crowned victorious. It is her first Overall Club Championship win since joining the club in 2008. She shot a low gross total of 257.

Runners up in the Championship Flight, were Carolyn Radomsky and Diana Pilson. In the First Flight, winner of Low Gross was Janet Biehl, 1st low net, Elaine Uhren and 2nd low net, Sandi Cross.

In the Second Flight, winner of Low Gross was Midge Kullberg, 1stlow net, Connie Adams, 2nd low net, Laurel Gedan. And in the Third Flight, winner of Low Gross, was Joan McKeever, 1st low net, Maureen Lenhart and 2nd low net, Judi Wiener.

The Corte Bella Men’s Golf Association (MGA) held its annual club championships during the past few weeks. The MGA Board of Directors is proud to announce the following winners of each event:

• Overall Club Champion -- Larry O’Neil (second time)• Net Division Club Champion -- Gregg Sorensen• Senior Club Champion (65+) -- Bill Hughes• Super Senior Club Champion (75+) -- Dick HayesCongratulations to each of these golfers.

“Is that a cookbook, or a passport?”Through an ever-growing number of in-demand Cooking Demonstrations, the CB Volunteers have brought to our community the authentic tastes of borderless international cuisines — peppered with the expert guidance of Chef Dan Haywood and paired with tall glasses of the world’s finest wines. Many in attendance have defined the experience as nothing short of “salvation for salivating palates.”

Since the program’s inception in 2009, the tastes of many countries have been explored... and conquered. Can you name the five countries that have been featured since 2011?

(Editor’s Hint: they span four continents.)

Wine & Food: UncorkedWine: is it a drink, a food, or a health aid? In 1991, 60 Minutes on CBS broadcast a segment called the French Paradox. How could a French diet high in fats (think fabulous gooey cheeses) not lead to a high risk of heart disease?

Part of the answer, according to Dr. Serge Renaud, lies in drinking wine to accompany food. Resveratrol, a substance found in wine, is both a polyphenol and a procyanidin. Dr. Sinclair, Bethesda Hospital, suggests that combined polyphenols and procyanidins are the perfect health cocktail! Polyphenols play a role as an antioxidant in preventing cell damage, also blocking some formation of plaque in the brain potentially leading to Alzheimer’s disease, and resveratrol contains quercetin, an anti-inflammatory.

As for resveratrol, all wines are not created equal. Resveratrol is found in its largest quantities in grape skins. Because red grape juice is left in contact with the skins during the fermentation process and white wine is usually not, red wine has more resveratrol. Additionally, cooler and wetter vines such as those of Oregon and New York State, have more resveratrol than wines of warmer California vineyards. Wine is not the only source; peanuts and eucalyptus also have some. For the most resveratrol absorption, sip your red wine slowly, letting the mucous membranes do their job.

Many folks complain of headaches if they drink wine, especially red. First advice: “Don’t drink so much!” Just joking! Seriously though, Dr. Gretkowski of Stanford University suggests that the problem is not sulfites but rather tyramine, an active substance

that causes dilation and contraction of blood vessels that can cause a headache. Sulfites occur naturally on grape skins and are used as a preservative in dried fruits such as apricots. Younger wines and unfiltered wines have higher rates of tyramine. Consider taking an ibuprofen half-an-hour before enjoying your wine or drinking older or filtered wines.

There is much positive evidence of lower risk of heart disease (some studies suggest as much as 20%-60%) for those who consume wine daily. Wine reduces the bad “LDL” lipoprotein cholesterol. The wine’s anticoagulant properties limit blood clotting platelets making them less prone to sticking and causing blood clots. Remember that wine is 80% water and only 12-15% alcohol, on average.

There are many other health advantages of consuming wine in the recommended amounts of 1-2 glasses per day:

• Wine drinkers can cut the risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis and increase bone density in older women.

• The anti-oxidant and anticoagulant properties in wine may slow effects of macular degeneration which causes vision to decline

• Studies showed that incidents of flu were less frequent in wine drinkers than in non drinkers. I got my flu shot anyway!

Bottom line: Wine is both a pleasure and a healthy habit when consumed in moderation and with a smile on your face. Bon Santé !
