Introduction
Corruption is generally defined as the abuse of public office for private gain. This definition has been encaged because of the widened scope of corruption to cover the abuse of all offices of trust for private gain, whether in the public or private sectors.
Variation of Corruption
Corruption manifest itself in various ways and it is useful to distinguish between Personal Corruption (motivated by personal gain) and Political Corruption (motivated by political gain). A further distinction can be made between individual corruption and organizational or institutional corruption. In the context of the state, corruption most often refers to criminal or otherwise unlawful conduct by Government Agencies, or by officials of these organizations acting in the course of their employment.
Definition of Corruption
Joseph Nye in his Article titled Corruption and Political Development: A Cost-Benefit Analysis, American political science review, Vol 61, No2, June 1967, defines corruption as a behavior which deviates from the normal duties of a public role because of private – regarding (family, close private clique), pecuniary or status gain, or violates rules against the exercise of private-regarding influence. This includes such behavior as bribery (use of reward to prevent the judgment of a person in a position of trust); nepotism (bestowal of patronage by reason of ascriptive relationship rather than merit); and misappropriation (illegal appropriation of public resources for private-regarding use).
In all the definitions of corruption given so far, it could be observed that corruption is seen as among others, the abuse of public office, the abuse of all offices of trust, misappropriation, private gain etc.
Criteria of corruption
Public Corruption: The misuse of public office for private gain.
Private corruption is between individuals in the private sector, such as the
Mafia extorting money from a local business. This course deals primarily
with public corruption
Types of Corruption
Bribery: An offer of money or favors to influence a Public official.
Nepotism: Favoritism shown by public officials to relatives or close friends.
Fraud: Cheating the government through deceit.
Embezzlement: Stealing money or other government property.
Administrative Corruption: Corruption that alters the implementation of
policies, such as getting a license even if you don’t qualify for it
Political Corruption: Corruption that influences the formulation of laws,
regulations, and policies, such as revoking all licenses, and gaining the sole
right to operate the beer or gas monopoly.
Graft: According to the Oxford Dictionary graft means the use of illegal or
unfair means to gain an advantage in business, politics etc. or be influenced
by another for personal gain, which is often difficult to prove, graft only
requires that the official gains something of value, not part of his official
pay, when doing his work.
Extortion: According to Oxford dictionary, extortion means to obtain
something by violence, threat etc.

Evaluation:
Corruption allegation is prevalent in newspaper on June, 2007 than any other year of Bangladesh because Army Backed caretaker government was successful to make anti-politician situation using the anti-corruption movement in Bangladesh in that period. Newspaper or media was busy to make coverage about the corruption of politicians because we have found all types of corruption more or less connected with the political corruption. Political leader was the main victim of corruption allegation of newspaper. We do not think that the accused person was innocent but we think the process was maintained or constructed intentionally. We have found some silly matter allegation which has no category explicitly which proves our understanding such as having the allegation of the Illegal Arms and bottles of contraband liquor of Moudud Ahmed. Such type of allegation have made vague understanding about the intention that army backed caretaker government.
The percentage and number of different types of corruption are calculated which are structured as following our findings:
Types of corruption Number of allegation PercentageGraft 17 22.97%Extortion 22 02.70%
Bureaucratic corruption 02 06.76%Institutional corruption 05 29.73%Embezzlement 08 10.81%
Fraud 04 21.62%Bribery 16 05.51%Total 74 100%
Conclusion:
Corruption is prevalent in our unstable developing country. But June, 2007 corruption allegation in newspaper was very crucial and frequent. Media played very crucial role by publishing such type of corruption allegation whether it is bad or good.
