The HomesteadsWe have two restored homesteads on site. The Cromarty and Sinclair homesteads are not only set up as Metis homesteads, they are also used during special events by our Artisans. Demonstrations could include beading, birch bark, weaving and fish scale art to name a few.

The Dream∞

Began many years ago–

The Metis Nation of Alberta leadership -

wanted a place to

share our Métis culture–

Provincial Executive decided to make this dream a reality

Page 11: Corrine Card

Where should this place be? •

The Metis Millennium Voyage identified numerous locations (60+) across Alberta that have historical importance to the Metis People.

Our current location was one of 12 determined to be the most promising for development.

About that time the People that owned this land was wanting to sell and approached the MNA, as they wanted it returned to the Metis People.

The Land∞

The land was sold in 1975 to the Schafer’s

The Metis Nation developed a proposal for the land development in order to gain the interest of their bank which did happen.

They then approached 3 Metis businessmen that agreed to give them the money to pay off the debt at the bank.

This initial support helped them secure Government support in the form of a centennial legacies grant for development.

The Victoria Landing Development Board was created and in 2006 changed the name to The Metis Crossing Board.
