Introduction

The newspaper Corriere della Sera is an Italian daily newspaper, published in Milan. It is among the oldest and most reputable Italian newspapers.

The methodology for assessing Corriere della Sera is based on four Indicators, built in the framework of MEDIVA project (see MEDIVA Diversity Indicators, a Tool Kit), which aimed at monitoring and evaluating the newspaper’s capacity to reflect migration related diversity and promote migrant integration.

The evaluation of indicators 2-4 and the calculation of relevant scores attributed to them were based on the responses given by a senior journalist of the newspaper during a telephone interview conducted in the summer 2011. The calculation of the score for each indicator was organized along the following procedure: we tick answers on the sub-questions and hence give score on the specific questions. Then, we calculated the total score for each indicator which is the average of the sub-indicators’ score.

INDICATOR 2 – Media news making/programme production

contacted whenever possible to make the report most accurate.

EXPLANATION of scoring : neither awareness nor implementation, does not have immigrants in its staff. The newspaper relies to a great extent on the

school of journalism (scuola di giornalismo) a new journalist has graduated from.

For example, the journalist interviewed suggested that the director should employ a journalist of non-Italian origin (in this case the interviewee thinks that positive discrimination would be justified). So far the request has not been met yet although the director assured the interviewee that if a suitable candidate came to them they would be happy to recruit him/her

EXPLANATION of scoring: no training for anybody. The interviewee pointed out that it is hardly probable that a newspaper in Italy provides its

journalists with a specific training. It is on most occasions the initiative of a journalist to keep him/herself updated.

4.2.a) Existence of courses aiming at raising the awareness of media professionals on diversity and how it should be reported Low :1

EXPLANATION of scoring : Primarily it is the initiative and willingness of the journalist to keep him/herself updated. The newspaper does not take any

specific actions to help realize it. However, it has been pointed out it is not the problem of this specific newspaper but rather it is a general problem of

all Italian media. The only type of training provided is technical training on the work of journalists online, for example. The journalist added that she

herself had a good University training in political sciences where she took courses on diversity as well so she was well prepared. Otherwise if a journalist

wants to be updated on the issues, he/she should arrange his training him/herself.
