Chapter One
Introduction of Project Area
10
Introduction Nepal is facing high trade deficit in international trade. According to SINA-2015/16, $ 4437.47 million
trade balance with India only. Youth’s unemployment situation has been growing rapidly since 20 years.
More than 0.4 million youths going abroad for job annually and remittance is contributing near about 30
% in national GDP. In this regards RERP is going to start its work focused to employment creation in
commercialization of agriculture, promotion of rural, micro and small business based on local resource
and skills with productive use of remittances as well.
RERP is targeted work under corridor approach and trying to build commercial chain between mountain,
hill and terai. In hilly areas agriculture is done in mostly river basin, low land, and valley. Slope Lands are
developed in different terraces for ploughing and irrigation. The Hills’ main cereal crops are rice, wheat
and barley meanwhile cash crops include potato and oilseed. Some farm households in the hilly areas of
province-1 and 3 are more diversified and produce high value crops including cardamom, ginger, broom
grass and mandarins. The tea and coffee is also commercially grown in the Dankutta and Bhijpur
Districts as cash crops. The Terai is the most fertile part of project area which is also known as the
granary of Nepal. It produces more than 55 percent of the national food grain supply. In Terai, the
major cereal crops are rice, maize, and wheat meanwhile the major cash crops include mustard, oilseed,
lentils, chickpeas and sugarcane. In addition, green vegetable, potato, Banana, jute, tobacco and tomato
are grown in the terai. So this study has focused two corridor named Koshi and Sagarmatha corridor
and Janakpur corridor.
The Farming systems in the Mid and East Terai is more diversified and commercialized than other part of
Nepal. Road and market infrastructure in the Terai are significantly more developed than in the Hills and
Mountains. There are several regional market hubs and large consumer centers in Terai. Four major
regional market hubs and transit route to India are closely connected with project working area like
Birgunj, Janakpur, Biratnagar and Kakadbhitta. So the study had adopted corridor approach to focus
Indo-Nepal transit route for business promotion.
Objectives of CPMA Major objectives of this study are the identification of potential commodities, their spatial distribution,
demand and supply situation, major gaps (infrastructure, finance, skill and technology etc). Following
are the specific objectives of this assignment;
To identify potential commodities and sector for supply chain promotion in line with value chain
development.
To support in identification of existing and potential market center, micro cottage and small
industries.
Support to project in commercialization of commodities with an improved understanding of the
location and resource potentiality, agro business enabling infrastructure, service provider and
pipeline industries.
Identify market potentials, local resources and key institutions in a particular geographic area
for the purpose of rural enterprise develop also undertake a preliminary identification and
assessment of BDS providers
11
Limitation of study The Corridor Potential Mapping & Assessment covers only 16 project districts. The study has been conducted only for project intervention purpose under corridor approach. Several focused group discussion has conducted and secondary data has collected from different data source.
The CPMA has conducted in very short period with support of limited human resource. The potential supply chain commodities and enterprises has listed based on information of
production and land coverage of agriculture products, no of livestock and forest product sales resister.
Commodities wise detail market assessment is needed before intervention of any listed sector or enterprise.
All thematic maps were prepared using GIS software but all attribute data shown in the maps are not geo-referenced.

Palika & Market Center Mapping by Corridor
24
Palika & Market Center of Koshi and Sagarmatha Corridor North-South Koshi Highway (Gogmani-Kimathanka), East-West Mahendra Highway, East-West Postal
Highway and East West Mid Hill Highway connecting Khotang and Bhojpur are the major roads of Koshi-
Sagarmatha Corridor. These roads connect major cities and market centers of the local products and is
one of the biggest industrial areas of the nation. This corridor has huge geographical diversity and crop
variation pattern ranges from low altitude plain area to hilly areas. North-south flowing snow fed Koshi
is the main rivers, provides irrigation facility to some districts (Morang, Sunsari, Saptari) nonetheless
also knows as flood prone during rainy seasons.
