Dear Corpus Christi Parishioners,

This weekend we are proud to recognize the students of our parish who have completed four years of partici-pation in our Christian Leadership Program. The Christian Leadership Program (CLP) is a four-year scholar-ship program that provides theological and spiritual formation to University of Toledo students to help them become effective Christian leaders in the modern world. CLP was founded in 1999 by Father Jim Bacik and has been recognized by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops for excellence in developing Chris-tian leaders for the future.

I hope you enjoy reading about how CLP has positively impacted the lives of this year’s graduating class. The investment many of you have made to CLP has helped form the lives of future leaders who are now empowered to live their faith in their careers, in their families, and in their parishes. If you would like to learn more about how to support the Christian Leadership Program please contact me. I look forward to hearing from you.

Gratefully,

Rev. Philip A. SmithDirector, Christian Leadership Program

Antonia ChavezAfter graduating in December 2013 with a degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Antonia has worked as a price analysis at Harvard Drug Group in Lavonia, Michigan.

"CLP has encouraged me to be faith fil led and has given me the strength to show my faith in the workplace and in the real world. CLP has given me a strong foundation in Catholic teaching. These teachings will follow me in every aspect of life and lead me to always grow deeper in faith."

Grace GosserAfter graduating in December 2013 with a degree in Civil Engineering, Grace has worked as a project engineer for Marathon Petroleum in Findlay Ohio.

“CLP contributed to my understanding of what it means to be a leader not only in the Catholic Church, but also in everything that I do. The program prepared me for life outside of school in ways that are truly inde-scribable; I know how to take my faith with me and live it to the fullest every single day. I now have a better understanding and appreciation for my faith with the tools necessary to continue to learn and share it.”

Steven HammersmithAfter graduating in May with a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Steven will be attend-ing graduate school at the University of Toledo to complete a Doctor of Pharmacy degree.

“CLP has helped prepare me to be a leader in my family and at work, and display the teachings of God through my attitude and my words. I can now talk and pray with confidence, now that I understand so much more about the Catholic faith and have grown closer to God.”

APPLICATIONS FOR INCOMING FRESHMENARE NOW AVAILABLE!

Applications for Christian Leadership Program scholarships for incom-ing freshmen who will begin studies at the University of Toledo in August 2014 are now available. The 2014 CLP application can be found under “Student/Faculty Programs” at the Corpus Christi University Parish website: www.ccup.org

Matt HankenhofAfter graduating in December 2014 with degrees in Civil Engineering as well as Family Business & Entrepre-neurship, Matt will be seeking employment in the civil engineering field.

“CLP has helped me keep my faith and my enthusiasm for Catholicism throughout my four years here at the University of Toledo. I’ve learned so much throughout all the classes and I feel confident to go out and be a Christian leader in the world.”

Anna KonwinskiAfter graduating in May with a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Anna will be attending graduate school at the University of Toledo to complete a Doctor of Pharmacy degree.

“CLP gave me the knowledge and courage to stand up for my faith. As someone that did not attend Catholic school growing up, CLP gave me more of a background to my faith to help me know what I truly believe.”

Chelsea RosfeldAfter graduating in May with a degree in Nursing, Chelsea will be seeking employment in the nursing field.

“CLP has helped me to feel confident, not only in my own beliefs, but also in the basis for these beliefs as well. I feel like I can go forth in the community as a confident, Catholic woman who is strongly rooted in her faith. As someone who has always attended Catholic school before UT, much of my faith was determined for me. CLP allowed me to live my faith as a choice, rather than a requirement or expectation. I have learned so much about the roots and rationale for our many rich Catholic traditions. I now feel truly confident in my ability to explain my beliefs and to continue in a strong faith life well past graduation.”

Justin SaundersAfter graduating in May with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Justin will be working as a Production Sup-port Engineer for Gentex Corporation in Zeeland, Michigan.

“CLP has given me a deep understanding of the different teachings of the Catholic Church and taught me how to discuss them in real life. CLP has given me tools to grow and develop my faith.”

Erin ShafferAfter graduating in May with a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Erin will be attending graduate school at the University of Toledo to complete a Doctor of Pharmacy degree.

“I feel that CLP has shaped me into a leader. I started here as a quiet freshman who would choose to follow instead of letting my voice be heard. Since then, CLP has empowered me to use my gifts and to take on lead-ership positions that utilize my talents. CLP has helped me to connect more with my faith. I have learned new ways to experience God and new ways to understand the Church. I have learned to defend my faith and express it with confidence.”

Melissa VelasquezAfter graduating in August with a degree in Marketing and E-Commerce, Melissa will be seeking employment in the sales and marketing field.

“CLP has prepared me to be more informed about my faith and given me opportunities to grow. In this way it has helped solidify my beliefs into my adult life. CLP made it possible for me to understand issues that may have otherwise left me confused or questioning the faith. It provided many opportunities to gain deeper insights, to formulate an informed position.”

DORR STREET RENOVATION

No doubt, you have noticed the work beginning on Dorr Street in preparation for the renovation of the traffic pattern between Byrne Road and Douglas Avenue. I have placed on the bulletin board outside the Gathering Space the photographs with the new plan for traffic on them for your review. This plan will take some of the frontage on our parish property and cause us to relocate our fence. The parish has been compensated for the property and the fence work that will be done. This work will begin very soon and is scheduled to be completed before the opening of the school year in Au-gust.

ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL

We are at 85% of our parish goal for the Annual Catholic Appeal. We are very grateful to the 122 parishioners who have pledged $19,254 of our $22,500 goal to this year’s campaign. There is still time for you to make a gift to this campaign and help us meet our goal. Envelopes are available on the table in the Gathering Space.

DIACONATE ORDINATION

On April 11, 2014 at 7 p.m. in the Basilica of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation in Carey, Ohio the Diocese of Toledo will celebrate the ordination of three men to the Diaconate. These are the men who are scheduled to ordained priests of our diocese in the spring of 2015. Two of these men have a relationship with Corpus Christi University Parish. George Mahas is a son of our parish and Scott Woods is an adopted son of the parish. While this is George’s home parish, Scott not only was active in CSA when he was a UT student but also worked on our parish staff. Please keep these gentlemen in your prayers as they make final preparations for their diaconate ordination and mark this date and time in your calendars so that you can join in this joyous celebration of our Church.
