From The Pastor’s Desk two mar nis and haven't even spent a dollar yet. Finally, one of them says, "How can you afford to serve mar-

nis as good as these for a dime apiece?" "I'm a re red tailor from Phoenix," the bartender says, "and I always wanted to own a bar. Last year I hit the Lo ery Jackpot for $125 million and decided to open this place. Eve-ry drink costs a dime. Wine, Liquor, beer it's all the same." "Wow! That's some story!" one of the men says. As the four of them sip their mar nis, they can't help no cing seven other people at the end of the bar who don't have any drinks in front of them and haven’t ordered anything the whole me they've been there. Nodding at the seven at the end of the bar, one of the men asks the Bartender, "What's with them?" The bartender says, "They're re red people from Florida. They’re wai ng for Happy Hour when drinks are half-price.” #2 - When the end of the world arrives how will the media report it? USA Today: We're dead The Wall Street Journal: Dow Jones plummets as world ends Na onal Enquirer: O.J. and Nicole, together again Microso Systems Journal: Apple loses market share Victoria's Secret Catalog: Our final sale Sports Illustrated: Game over! Wired: The last new thing! Rolling Stone: The Grateful Dead reunion tour Readers Digest: 'Bye! Discover Magazine: How will the ex nc on of all life as we know it affect the way we view the cosmos? TV Guide: Death and damna on: Nielson Ra ngs soar! Lady's Home Journal: Lose 10 lbs by judgement day with our new "Armageddon" Diet! America Online: System temporarily down. Try calling back in 15 minutes. Inc. Magazine: Ten ways you can profit from the apoca-lypse! #3 - As the storm raged, the captain realized his ship was sinking fast. He called out, "Anyone here know how to pray?" One man stepped forward. "Aye, Captain, I know how to pray." "Good," said the captain, "you pray while the rest of us put on our life jackets - we're one short." Fr. Murphy

Dear Parishioners, This month of February will fly by very quickly. Beginning the first weekend of March we will have the Bishop’s Annual Stewardship Appeal followed by Ash Wednesday on March 6th. The following weekend we will kick off our Parish Mis-sion with Father Jewel Aytona, a mission priest with the Fathers of Mercy. The Parish Mission will begin on Monday, March 11th to Thursday, March 14th. There will be a morning session and an evening session. Please make every effort to a end the mission. Just a friendly reminder. As the weather gets warmer, parishioners tend to dress down for mass. Please keep in mind that we are a ending the Wedding Feast of the Lamb. Do not treat the weekend mass (or any mass for that ma er) as a fast food restaurant. We don’t come to get our Jesus. We come to worship Him and adore Him. Give Jesus the best when we come to mass. I am par cularly con-cerned when parishioners come into mass dressed in shorts, flip-flops and T-shirt. Remember, there was a me 40 or 50 years ago, when dressing this way was unthinkable at mass-es. The same goes for those who are in the habit of arriving late for mass or leaving mass immediately a er communion. While I realize that there are certain things that can hold up parishioners from arriving on me, I would like to suggest that if you are aware that you cannot get to mass un l very late, please consider a ending the following mass and make the effort to arrive early enough so that you can prepare yourselves spiritually. For a number of people it has be-come a bad habit of arriving to mass, even a er the gospel is read. Please come for the en re mass. And now some funnies: #1 - Four old guys are walking down a street. They turn a corner and see a sign that says, "Old Timers Bar - ALL drinks 10 cents." They look at each other and then go in, thinking this is too good to be true. The old bartender says in a voice that carries across the room, “Come on in and let me pour one for you! What'll it be, gentlemen? “There’s a fully stocked bar, so each of the men orders a mar ni. In no me the bartender serves up four iced mar nis shak-en, not s rred, and says, "That's 10 cents each, please." The four guys stare at the bartender for a moment, then at each other. They can't believe their good luck. They pay the 40 cents, finish their mar nis, and order another round. Again, four excellent mar nis are produced, with the bartender again saying, "That's 40 cents, please.” They pay 40 cents, but their curiosity gets the be er of them. They've each had

When the Roman Empire turned a favorable eye toward the once-persecuted Chris ans, among the effects was a popula-

on explosion in the bap smal font, as Chris an sympathiz-ers stepped from the shadows. With more and more people becoming Chris ans, laws were passed to protect Sunday as a work-free day. Soon, it became possible to celebrate Mass later in the morning, rather than the older custom of gather-ing before dawn to celebrate Eucharist. Amazingly, despite the increasing numbers of Chris ans, there was great re-sistance to adding to the number of worship events; the Eu-charist that began as a few friends around a table soon was transformed into a more formal event with throngs crowd-ing a large hall. All the Chris ans in a city or town would gather around the bishop for the one Sunday Eucharist, and only when the crowds became unmanageable was there an impulse to divide the assembly by spli ng off a new bishop and flock. Now, sixteen hundred years later, many parishes see a need to trim or combine Mass schedules. This is o en seen as tough surgery. Yet our forebears in the faith would see it as a gain: a filling up of the Eucharist with a large and vigorous assembly, a fullness of ministry, an opportunity to make the Church more fully visible and stronger for service.
