PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER: Evan Grills spun seven sterling innings and J.D. Davis went deep twice Tuesday night as the Hooks rolled to a 7-2 victory over the Naturals at Arvest Ballpark. The Hooks took advantage of wildness by NW Arkansas starter Josh Staumont, sending eight to the plate in the third. Nick Tanielu accounted for the key hit in the frame, a two-run single thru the left side. Chase McDonald added a sac fly, putting Corpus Christi ahead 3-0. Staumont was charged with two hits, six walks and a hit batsman in 2 1/3 innings. The support was more than enough for Grills, who retired 18 of the first 20 batters he faced. With Grills cruising, the Hooks tacked on. In the fourth, Garrett Stubbs belted a two-run home run to right field off Evan Beal. Davis opened the fifth with a no-doubter over the tiered terrace in left field. The right-handed slugger hit an opposite field shot off Miguel Almonte in the ninth. Northwest Arkansas broke through in the seventh as Frank Schwindel opened with a double. Ryan O’Hearn was next and hit a two-run home run into the left-field bullpen. Grills surrendered just four hits and fanned three without walking a batter. He threw 51 of 78 pitches for strikes. Michael Freeman and Jacob Dorris each worked a scoreless inning in relief.

ANNOUNCING THEIR PRESENCE: The Hooks have strung together a pair of impressive performances against the clubs from the Natural State. In the past 2 games, Corpus Christi has scored 14 runs on 18 hits, including 5 homers. Meanwhile, Hooks hurlers have permitted 3 runs on 11 hits over the past 18 innings. The breathing room has been refreshing for Corpus Christi. Sunday’s 7-1 triumph over the Travelers marked the Hooks’ largest margin of victory since a 12-6 decision July 3 vs. Tulsa. In the 39 contests between July 3 and Sunday’s series finale, Corpus Christi won 17 games by an average of 1.8 runs. POWER PLAY: 3B J.D. Davis is the first Hook to feature a pair of multi-homer performances this year. The 23-year-old from Elk Grove, CA, belted 3 home runs May 19 in San Antonio, matching the club record. Davis owns 18 homers and a team-best 27 doubles in 2016. The Hooks have enjoyed a power surge of late, following up Sunday’s 2-dinger day with 3 home runs last night. Sunday was Corpus Christi’s first multi-homer game since a 3-clout effort August 1 vs. San Antonio. From April thru June, the Hooks belted 90 home runs, which ranked 3rd in the minor leagues. Since July, Corpus Christi has cracked 36 homers, slotting 3rd in the Texas League. IT HAS HAPPENED BEFORE: Tuesday’s triumph ended a 10-game stretch in which the Hooks alternated wins and losses. Corpus Christi’s 3-game sweep of San Antonio Aug 1-3 at Whataburger Field is the club’s longest win streak since 6-game tear June 16-21.
