“  GREAT WORK PRODUCT, UNDERSTANDING OF OUR CHALLENGES, ATTENTION TO DETAIL AND

    OVERSIGHT OF THE SUBCONTRACTOR.”

    – Dave Bruzek, Duke Energy

    ESCALA CONDOMINIUM TOWER

    CLIENT : LEXAS COMPANIES

    LOCATION: SEATTLE, WASHINGTON, UNTED STATES

INDUSTRY : URBAN DEVELOPMENT & INFRASTRUCTURE

Golder provided geotechnical and shoring design engineering services during the construction of a 31-stor

upscale condominium in downtown Seattle, WA, USA. The building’s design included nine stories of

underground parking. Golder designed a soldier pile and tieback shoring system with underpinning piles to

provide the best support of a 1926 historic landmark next to the site. A custom-designed instrumentation

system was used to monitor the performance of the shoring system in real-time, even from remote location

The 94-foot excavation for the parking garage is the second deepest in Seattle history.

    NORTH BROWN HILL WIND FARM

    CLIENT : WARD GROUP

    LOCATION: SOUTH AUSTRALIA, AUSTRALIA

    INDUSTRY : POWER

Golder’s geotechnical team was engaged to support Ward Group with construction of the 63 wind turbine

generator at the North Brown Hill Wind Farm. Golder supported Ward Group during the design and

construction phases with the provision of a range of geotechnical services. The full scope of work includedgeotechnical investigations; road, hardstand and earthworks specifications; foundation assessment and

design; rock anchor testing; and materials testing and construction stage support. These services were

often conducted within the tight timescales dictated by the construction activities. Leveraging off Golder’s

extensive wind farm experience, we were able to add further value to the project by assessing the strength

of the foundation materials in-situ by undertaking down-hole high pressure pressuremeter testing. This

in-situ strength information enabled us to reduce the drilling depth at the majority of the wind turbine

generator locations to less than 10 m, rather than the anticipated 15 m. This resulted in investigation time

and cost savings for Ward Group and enabled the footing and rock anchor dimensions to be reduced.

    COLLAHUASI MINE CLOSURE PLAN

CLIENT : COMPAÑÍA MINERA DOÑA INÉS DE COLLAHUASI (CMDIC)

    LOCATION: NORTHERN CHILE

    INDUSTRY : MINING

CMDIC commissioned Golder to develop a closure plan for their copper and molybdenum mine at

Collahuasi, 4,000 m above sea level in the Andean Altiplano. The mine produces 450 t of copper concentra

and 70 t of copper cathodes annually. Newly enacted mining regulations in Chile require all mines to

submit a closure plan. The social impacts of closure, as well as the cost of closure, were considered. The pla

covered closure of the mine, its 200 km pipeline to the processing plant and port facilities.

INDUSTRY : URBAN DEVELOPMENT & INFRASTRUCTURE

The Peninsula Link project is a 27 km freeway linking existing freeways at Carrum Downs and Mount Mart

and bypassing the city of Frankston. The freeway is the gateway to the popular Mornington Peninsula

region to the south of Melbourne. Golder was sole sourced for all phases of the Peninsula Link project anddelivered practical, cost-effective integrated geotechnical solutions that met tight project performance

and construction timeframes. A section of the freeway passed through an existing wetland underlain by

complex geological and hydrogeological conditions. Golder developed an innovative design incorporating

a cement-bentonite cut off wall, modified cut batter slopes and a formation drainage blanket to deal with

the prevailing ground conditions whilst still maintaining the pre-construction water levels in the sections o

    wetland outside the alignment.

FAST-TRACK TUNNELLING FOR ONE OF THE WORLD’S LARGES T DESIGN-BUILD

    PROJECTS

    CLIENT : THE WASHINGTON GROUP

    LOCATION: CENTRAL LUZON, PHILIPPINES

INDUSTRY : URBAN DEVELOPMENT & INFRASTRUCTURE

One of the largest BOT design-build projects in the world, San Roque now provides hydroelectric power,

irrigation water and flood control for Central Luzon in the Philippines. Golder was the tunnel design and

rock-engineering consultant for the Washington Group, San Roque’s design-build contractor. Underground

excavations involved three diversion tunnels, a power tunnel, a low-level irrigation tunnel, a shaft-type sem

underground powerhouse and a complex of grouting galleries for the 200 m high dam. The Golder team

    provided fast-track engineering for the tunnels and rock slopes to meet the tight design-build schedule;

designed the tunnel layout, rock support and tunnel lining for each tunnel; and provided on-site rockmechanics engineers to evaluate rock conditions as they were exposed, and to adapt the rock support to

    these conditions.

ROCK MEC HANICS SERVIC ES AT “CAVA KRISTALLINA”

    CLIENT : OMYA, S.P.A.

LOCATION: VIPITENO, PROVINCE OF BOLZANO, ITALY

    INDUSTRY : MINING

The Omya S.p.A. marble extraction mining concession is comprised of two quarries at different altitudes:

the lower quarry, “Pratone” (Pardaun) (1200 m) was previously used for mining purposes in the winter

months, when the upper quarry, “Kristallina” (1745-1900 m) could not be reached safely due to the risk

of avalanches. However, due to the increasing demand for purer and whiter material, the mining currently

only regards the “Kristallina” quarry, where higher quality marble can be found. The Kristallina quarry has

been mined underground since 2002 using two sub-horizontal crosscut accesses at an altitude of 1745 m

above sea level. The mining method adopted in the two production areas is sublevel open stoping with lar

drillings. Golder performed periodic on-site surveys of underground voids in order to check the mining tren

and the aspects inherent to the static stability of the chambers and tunnels; performed stability calculation

with numerical methods; and installed instrumentation for monitoring deformations and interpreting the

    acquired measurements.

HIGHLY VALUABLE GROUNDWATER SUPPLY REQUIRES MANAGEMENT STRATEGY

CLIENT : CHELAN PUBLIC UTILITY DISTRICT

LOCATION: COLUMBIA RIVER, CENTRAL WASHINGTON STATE, UNITED STATES

INDUSTRY : URBAN DEVELOPMENT & INFRASTRUCTURE

A productive aquifer in the US Pacific Northwest that supplies water for a salmon hatchery and drinking

water for adjacent cities through high-capacity wellfields sought to achieve a sustainable water supply

that meets specific water quality criteria. For the local Chelan Public Utility District, an adequate amount

of groundwater must be available with appropriately cool thermal conditions for rearing hatchery salmon.

To develop a long-term management plan, a data collection and modelling investigation was initiated to

provide a technical foundation for sustainable wellfield management strategies. The groundwater system

is monitored using an automated network installed throughout the aquifer. Golder assisted in developing

quality assurance/quality control procedures for data collection and management, as well as evaluating

high-resolution groundwater elevation and temperature data collected by the monitoring system. We also

incorporated seismic geophysical techniques to characterise the thickness of the aquifer.

TSUNAMI HAZARD EVALUATION FOR AN INDUS TRIAL SITE

    CLIENT : MARQUARD & BAHLS

    LOCATION: JAVA, INDONESIA

    INDUSTRY : OIL & GAS

Golder carried out a tsunami inundation study and hazard evaluation for an oil storage facility on the

tsunami-prone, northwestern tip of Java, Indonesia. Major regional earthquake sources lie within the western

and eastern Sunda Arc, while a threat of volcanic tsunami is also posed by the nearby Anak Krakatau Island.

The assessment was based on a review of available historical information, including tsunami catalogues,

and the implementation of simplified methods for estimating tsunami wave response times. Comprehensive

tsunami catalogues for the Indonesian region were consulted to establish a correlation between tsunami

height and recurrence interval as a conservative indicator of tsunami wave heights to be expected in the area

under investigation. Analysis showed that wave travel times are sensitive to the exact location of the tsunami

source, as both distance to the site and the bathymetry between source and receptor dictate time of arrival.

Travel time maps for different tsunami sources were then generated to evaluate evacuation routes from the

site. Final recommendations stressed the importance of risk awareness and providing the site staff access to

tsunami warning information in order to minimise threats to health and safety.

OFFSETS PROGRAMME TARGETS BIODIVERSIT Y HOTSPOT IN MADAGASCAR

    CLIENT : SHERRITT INTERNATIONAL

    LOCATION: MADAGASCAR, AFRICA

    INDUSTRY : MINING

Ambatovy, a large-tonnage nickel and cobalt mining operation in Madagascar, is taking care to ensure

that the project’s environmental strategy produces positive conservation outcomes. Sherritt International

and its partners, the developers of the project, are committed to designing and sustaining a BiodiversityManagement Plan (BMP). The plan aims to achieve no net loss on biodiversity and minimal impacts in

the flora, fauna and aquatic resources in the region. Golder has been actively involved in the project over

the last several years, first in conducting the initial environmental and social impact assessment (ESIA),

which involved baseline data collection, impact analyses and reporting for physical, biological and social

disciplines. We then helped to design and provide technical assistance with the biodiversity planning.

The BMP is seen as a critical next step to build upon the ESIA. The plan includes a detailed radio collaring

exercise to track movement of lemurs (primates endemic to Madagascar) during mine and pipeline

construction, as an aid to improving mitigation.

    PROPOSED MESSINA STRAIGHT BRIDGE

This project included the development of the environmental guidelines for the design, construction and

operation of the bridge according to the specific requests of the approving authorities, and ensuring the

highest level of environmental protection during all stages of construction. The project also needed to be

in compliance with international and Italian environmental regulations. The development of the guidelines

included the review of the preliminary design documents, the environmental impact statement, and

the approval documents. For the Environmental Monitoring Tender, Golder prepared the Environmental,

Territorial and Social Monitoring Plan for the construction and operational phase of the bridge and its links

JASPER PARK GLACIER SKYWALK ENV IRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT

    CLIENT : BREWSTER TRAVEL CANADA

    LOCATION: JASPER, ALBERTA, CANADA

INDUSTRY : URBAN DEVELOPMENT & INFRASTRUCTURE

When Brewster Travel Canada (Brewster) proposed a redevelopment of Sunwapta Canyon Viewpoint into

a new interpretive attraction: the Glacier Skywalk, they knew the high profile nature and location in Jasper

National Park would provide many challenges. The proposed Glacier Skywalk would consist of a 400 m

walkway overlooking the Sunwapta Valley, combined with a glass-floored lookout platform projecting

35 m out over the canyon. To help guide this development, Brewster retained Golder to conduct the

environmental assessment. In order to understand the potential impact of the Glacier Skywalk on goats

and sheep, Golder developed and implemented a custom approach to monitor these species activities

without human interaction by using a combination of remote cameras and field observations. Based on the

results obtained during the first year of monitoring, Golder was able to recommend changes to the project

design and schedule that would minimise the project’s impacts on goats and sheep. This contributed

to Brewster receiving approval to develop the Glacier Skywalk in early 2012, on the condition that a

monitoring program would continue for five years post-construction.

    INTEGRATED MINE WASTE STORAGE CONCEPT

    CLIENT : DUNDEE PRECIOUS METALS

    LOCATION: BULGARIA

    INDUSTRY : MINING

The Krumovgrad gold mining project was faced with land use constraints and had no suitable site for

a traditionally managed tailings facility. The integrated mine waste facility design prepared by Golder

provided for storage of both the tailings and the mine waste rock generated from the open pit mine in a

single facility. This concept did away with the tailings dam and stores both tailings and waste rock within

an area previously designated for mine waste rock storage only. The total mine footprint was significantly

reduced by nearly 50%, largely due to the elimination of the tailings area. Tailings will be dewatered to a

paste consistency and then deposited into cells constructed within the mine waste rock facility. The mine

rock promotes drainage and consolidation of the tailings. A drainage system will convey both rainfall thatinfiltrates the facility and also water expelled from the tailings during consolidation to two sumps at the

toe of the facility. This water will then be pumped to a pond for use in the process. To prevent tailings

from being carried through the outer mine rock,a two-zone filter system will consist of a heavy geotextile

directly against the mine rock and covered by a layer of sand.

DESIGN OF A TAILINGS DES ULPHURIZATION SYSTEM AND A THICKENED

    TAILINGS SURFACE DISPOSAL SYSTEM

    CLIENT : GOLDCORP CANADA, LTD.

LOCATION: MUSSELWHITE MINE, OPAPIMISKAN, ONTARIO, CANADA

    INDUSTRY : MINING

The disposal of mine tailings and other mine waste materials has historically constituted a large

portion of the costs and potential liability risk of a mining operation. Coupled with the increased

environmental liabilities that go along with traditional placement strategies means that new and

existing mines require alternative placement strategies that more effectively meet environmental

and regulatory requirements. Paste or thickened tailings technology allows for a smaller tailings

impoundment area, increased water management capabilities and less environmental impact. With

this in mind, Golder Paste Technology Ltd. (Golder PasteTec) was engaged by Goldcorp Canada Ltd.

to complete the detailed engineering for a tailings desulphurization system and a thickened tailings

surface disposal system at their Musselwhite Mine to address these issues.

    STRATEGIC PLANNING: GELA 2020

    CLIENT : COMUNE DI GELA

    LOCATION: GELA, ITALY

INDUSTRY : URBAN DEVELOPMENT & INFRASTRUCTURE

The ancient Sicilian town of Gela, Italy, known as an important farming and industrial center, is also

known for serious health problems among its citizens, deterioration of the environment and low quality

of life. The area is considered one of the most polluted in Italy, however Gela is now on its way to a better

future because of Golder’s help developing a Strategic Plan to improve the town. Golder helped develop a

Strategic Plan called “Gela 2020” which helps identify ways to improve Gela’s environmental, social, and

economic health. Golder’s team prepared a report on the current state of the environment. From there,

possible future scenarios were developed, benchmarking analyses carried out and the most important next

steps identified. This approach, both technically sound and participatory, helped highlight several gaps, problems, ideas and suggestions for future action. Two of the most urgent needs are for an environmental

monitoring system involving several components and for the organisation of a task force for town

planning. As Gela 2020 is refined and implemented, the quality of life for the town’s residents is expected

    to improve.

    REMEDIATING THE SHOREHAM FACILITY

CLIENT : SOO LINE RAILROAD COMPANY D/B/A CANADIAN PACIFIC

    LOCATION: MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA, UNITED STATES

INDUSTRY : URBAN DEVELOPMENT & INFRASTRUCTURE

The Canadian Pacific (CP) Shoreham facility contained soils and groundwater that had become

contaminated as a result of past operations. The groundwater had been contaminated with

pentachlorophenol (PCP) and polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and the soils contained solvent-related

volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and/or petroleum-related contamination. Golder provided various

consulting and engineering services including site investigation, permitting, design of remediation

systems, coordination and contracting of subcontractors, and ongoing operation and maintenance

service. We designed cleanup remedies that included installing pump-and-treat systems, a soil vapor

extraction system, a soil biopile treatment system, and a non-aqueous extraction technique system. The

corrective actions were implemented on aggressive schedules and provided impressive results.

    CHLORINATED SOLVENT SOURCE ZONE REMOVAL

    CLIENT : CONFIDENTIAL

    LOCATION: ÄNGELHOLM, SWEDEN

    INDUSTRY : MANUFACTURING

Partial mass removal of a chlorinated solvent source zone at a manufacturing site in southern Sweden

was needed to prevent future migration of contaminants to the groundwater. Golder provided turnkey

investigation, design and remediation services. A large 1.2 m diameter auger was used to drill verticalholes into the ground and remove the contaminated soil in columns over an area of some 80 sq m

extending 12 m below ground surface. Through an array of overlapping holes, an estimated 95% of the

contamination from the site was removed. This solution provided significant health and safety benefits

    over a conventional excavation.

MINE RISK ANALYSIS FOR ENVIRONMENT, PUBLIC SAFETY

    CLIENT : CONFIDENTIAL

    LOCATION: PERU, SOUTH AMERICA

    INDUSTRY : MINING

Identifying significant environmental and public safety risks is a vital part of doing an overall environmenta

impact assessment (EIA) for mining projects such as the one under development in southern Peru in the

high Andes. Golder performed a risk assessment that involved all relevant components of the operation

connected to this mine expansion. They ranged from the open pits, primary crusher, surface conveyor belt,

coarse ore stockpile and concentrate plant, to tailings ponds, water and power supply services, and the

truck transportation route from the mine site to the closest port. Golder adapted a standard risk assessmen

methodology for use in EIAs called the Systems Failure Modes and Effects Criticality Analysis to look at

potential failures and estimate the associated risks. A project-specific risk matrix was prepared, lookingat both the likelihood and the consequence severity of environmental and public safety hazard scenarios

that were identified. The risk matrix also included a risk ranking by priority level, which can be effective for

managing risks throughout the project life cycle. Once the risk results were documented in a risk register,

effective mitigation measures were then included in a risk management and contingency plan.

    PRODUCED WATER TREATMENT

    CLIENT : PETRONIN

    LOCATION: TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO

    INDUSTRY : OIL & GAS

Golder teamed with general contractor T.N. Ramnauth & Company Ltd. in Trinidad and Tobago to

design, build, own, and operate a produced water treatment plant, the first major oil and gas treatment

facility for this Caribbean nation. Treated water is provided to the oil company in Trinidad and Tobago

for beneficial industrial re-use to produce steam used for reinjection to enhance oil recovery. With this

approach, freshwater consumption can be decreased by over 500,000 gallons (1.9 million litres) per day.

Golder completed detailed characterisation of four sources of influent water. Contaminants of concern

were identified, including oil and grease and soluable organic compounds. Bench testing of dissolved air

flotation and biological treatment was performed to develop design parameters.

AIR AND SEAWATER QUALITY MONITORING SYSTEM

    CLIENT : CONFIDENTIAL

    LOCATION: NORTH CASPIAN SEA, KAZAKHSTAN

    INDUSTRY : OIL & GAS

The goal of this project was for the design, deployment and management of an experimental pilot system

to automatically monitor air and seawater quality operating in ‘near real-time’ mode. An innovative,

state-of-the-science system and the first ‘near real-time’ sea water monitoring system was installed

offshore in the North Caspian Sea in October 2011. The east side of the manmade island was equipped

with a production and processing facility to monitor background air and water quality in the vicinity of

the Kashagan oil and gas field. Golder was contracted to assist with development of a proof of concept

monitoring system through three phases: (1) Develop the conceptual design and technical specification

for a proof of concept monitoring system; (2) Procure, integrate, test, install, commission, and operate an

experimental system at one location in the North Caspian Sea in the vicinity of the artificial island; and (3)

Complete the experimental phase obtaining permits and certifications from authorities of the Republic of

Kazakhstan and handing over the approved monitoring station to the operator. The project was developed

by a multidisciplinary and international team based in Italy, USA, Canada, UK, and Kazakhstan.

    COASTAL ENGINEERING ANALYSIS

    CLIENT : CITY OF WESTPORT

    LOCATION: WESTPORT, WASHINGTON, UNITED STATES

INDUSTRY : URBAN DEVELOPMENT & INFRASTRUCTURE

Golder personnel assisted the City of Westport to address the effects of increased wave climate on

navigation and coastal protection structures at Grays Harbor, Washington. The city has experienced

substantial wave attack on the revetment at Point Chehalis in recent years, which has contributed to

coastal flooding, debris, and structure damage along and adjacent to the revetment, including a parking

lot, marina, and condominiums. Golder conducted an engineering analysis of run-up and overtopping of

the Point Chehalis revetment at Westport. The information gathered during this analysis will assist the City

in coordinating with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to evaluate the costs and benefits of alternatives to

manage and mitigate wave run-up, overtopping, and flooding during episodes of severe wave attack on th

revetment. Work included analysing survey data, collecting wave and water level data on the revetment,

and calculating wave run-up and overtopping on the structure. Golder validated a phase-resolving wave

model (BOUSS2D) with the field measurements and used it to transform ocean waves from offshore to the

toe of the revetment for run-up and overtopping calculations of several known overtopping events.

MEKONG RIVER WORK FOCUSES ON IMPACT TO SEDIMENTATION

CLIENT : NATURAL HERITAGE INSTITUTE NGO

LOCATION: LOWER MEKONG RIVER BASIN, ASIA

INDUSTRY : URBAN DEVELOPMENT & INFRASTRUCTURE

Laos, Vietnam, Thailand, and Cambodia have agreed to work cooperatively on major infrastructure needs.

There are plans to build up to 130 dams, principally to generate hydroelectric power. One of the prominent

issues with dam development is effective sedimentation management, as the dams capture sediment

that then acts to obstruct fish passage. The Lower Mekong Basin happens to have one of the more bio-

diverse fisheries in the world. Golder played a pivotal role in investigating the potential to pass sediment

through existing dams and proposed dam designs. Much of our work was based on experience gained

during efforts toward developing the RESCON (REServoir CONservation) method for the World Bank. This

approach assesses the technical and economic feasibility of passing sediment through reservoirs. Once

various proposals were determined, we worked with research institutes in Southeast Asia to refine the

    concepts.

MANAGED AQUIFER RECHARGE CAN MAXIMISE GROUNDWATER STORAGE

CLIENT : CANTERBURY REGIONAL COUNCIL, NEW ZEALAND

LOCATION: SOUTH ISLAND, NEW ZEALAND, AUSTRALASIA

INDUSTRY : URBAN DEVELOPMENT & INFRASTRUCTURE

With the need for sustainable, long-term water resource management in much of the world, managed

aquifer recharge (MAR) is increasingly being viewed as suitable to balancing environmental benefits and

economic needs. In New Zealand, regional water planning efforts on South Island are looking at MAR.

Overuse of groundwater in this area has resulted in declining springs, rivers, and groundwater levels and h

limited the full storage potential of the underlying aquifers. For this particular project, a MAR recharge tria

infiltrated surface water through an existing gravel river bed. The watershed area consists of sloping plains

underlain by gravel-rich sediment, which contain groundwater fed from rainfall and from seepage from the

rivers and irrigation systems that cross them. An existing spillway structure was used to divert the recharge

water from one of the major rivers that flows from a higher elevation, allowing the water to be recharged

to the target aquifer via natural infiltration. We led the development of this project, and monitored and

reported on the flow of the diverted water and the levels of groundwater in wells around and downstream

of the discharge point. A pre-trial risk analysis and post-trial assessment of the results were done.

WATER TREATMENT PLANT EYED FOR FORMER GOL D MINING DISTRICT

CLIENT : COLORADO DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH & ENVIRONMENT

    LOCATION: COLORADO, UNITED STATES

    INDUSTRY : MINING

A water treatment facility is planned on the site of a historic gold mining district in the State of Colorado,

which has long been a US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Superfund site. This is due to a legacy

of contaminated mine waste impacting surface water after the mining ceased. The water at the site

comes mainly from overflows from old drainage tunnels and surface water impacted from contacting

contaminated materials. These tunnels effectively drain an extensive network of old abandoned

underground mine workings. Surface water will be captured in a collection system, while some that

seeps into the groundwater may be collected separately and combined with the other surface water and

diverted to the new treatment plant, which will be located less than one mile (1.6 km) away. For this

water treatment project, Golder is acting as the primary architect/engineering consultant and were directly

responsible for all process, piping, equipment, and instrumentation and controls design. We will also

provide construction and commissioning support services when the facility is built.
