    Background

    CLAIM Limited was established in 1968 as Christian Literature Association in Malawi by a number of churches and para-church organizations with the aim of publishing and distributing literature to churches, organizations and the general public. With this mandate CLAIM Limited grew rapidly in the first two decades of its existence. By 1992, it had published more than 25 titles and had established 36 outlets dotted across all the districts in Malawi. CLAIM Limited is now a leading publisher and distributor of Christian, educational and professional literature in Malawi.

    CLAIM Limited has, like in its first decades of existence, established a number of sales agents especially in rural areas where there are no bookshops. Currently, CLAIM Limited has got 13 bookshops in all the three regions of Malawi.

    Special QualificationsThe organization is headed by a General Manager and is supported by a management team composed of the extensively qualified personnel with a vast experience in their fields of research & development, production, publishing, marketing, sales, procurement, finance and administration.

    The Board of Directors plays an advisory role on the actions and decisions of the Executive Management, and is responsible for external reporting of CLAIM Limiteds affairs.The Board is answerable to the shareholders.

    The Executive management operates under the leadership of the General Manager (GM)

    and shares responsibility for the development of CLAIMs strategy and policies, and ensures the achievement of its objectives and results.

    The following are the members of the Executive Management of CLAIM Limited:

    Andrew Chisamba owes his leadership prowess to the diverse skills and experience that he has continuously sharpened with exposure. He has 9 years progressive experience as a team member of the Executive Management of CLAIM, with the first two and

    half years as Publications Manager and the latter years as General Manager. He also has and is still serving on various company boards, both local and international. These include the World Association for Christian Communication-UK,

    The Executive Management has, for practical purposes, adopted a division of responsibilities indicating the functional and business areas monitored and reviewed by the individual members.

    Rex Njobvu has vast experience in Financial Management and Budgetary Control gathered from years of work in both the public and private sector. His strength lies in the ability to develop systems that strengthen monitoring and enforcement of proper financial systems including stock control.

    Canada, Africa, the Copyright Society of Malawi, and the Book Publishers Association of Malawi, Bangwe Living Waters Church. He is also affliated to number of groupings and organizations which include Malawi Union of Academic and Non-Fiction Authors, Malawi Pen and Malawi Writers Union.

    During his leadership as General Manager, he has driven CLAIM from a fragile and sinking organization with a huge net current liability scenario and a perpetual loss-making history to a financially sound and fast growing company that it is now. A strategist by training, he has managed to take CLAIM to a position of market leader in the textbook publishing segment and transformed its sales and marketing function with the help of the functional heads of departments.

    Andrew Chisamba holds a Bachelor of Arts Humanities Degree from University of Malawi obtained in 2000. He also holds a Master of Science Degree in Strategic Management from University of Derby obtained in 2012. His area of specialization is Marketing Communications.

    Production Manager

    During his leadership at CLAIM Limited as Finance and Administration Manager, he has brought some integrity into the management of finances by enforcing adherence to both budgets and internal controls.

    Rex Njobvu holds a PAEC Accounting Diploma, and Bachelor of Accountancy Degree obtained in 2015 at Exploits University. His area of specialization is Accountancy and Finance.

    John Paul Yohane, the current Production Manager, joined CLAIM in August 2012 as Senior Assistant Book Editor. He was then appointed into the Executive Team as Production Manager in January 2014 after demonstrating passion and high performance in publishing matters. With his 12 year experience

    in teaching at secondary school level, he proved to have brought to CLAIM the expertise that CLAIM needed to publish academic books that satisfy the standards of modern education.

    Groomed through various national on-the-job trainings such as test item development, marking of national examinations, syllabus drafting, development of teaching and learning materials, he fully understands the whole process of producing high quality textbooks and other reading materials.

    John Paul Yohane graduated in the year 2000 from the University of Malawi with a Bachelors Degree in Education (Humanities) specializing in languages. He currently sits in the Projects Committee of the Book Publishers Association of Malawi (BPAM) and is also serving as executive member of the Malawi Union for Academic and Non-Fiction Authors since 2013. He is currently pursuing a masters degree in Strategic management.

    Ron Richard Muphuwa has a blend of experience and skills in organization, planning, research and effective implementation of satisfactory customer driven services. Over the years, he has evolved from being an Educationist in the Malawi Civil

    Service to Book Editor and then Senior Research and Business Development Officer. He is currently the Sales and Marketing Manager for CLAIM Limited.

    During his leadership as Sales and Marketing Manager, he has inspired the Sales and Marketing team to realise their full potential, be effective and add value to whatever they do. He has doubled CLAIM sales staff confidence and efficiency levels within three months. He has also championed the promotion of CLAIMs Arise brand to a household name level.

    As a member of the Executive Management, he has helped to drive fellow members zeal towards making CLAIM a customer driven organisation rather than a product driven one, and crafted strategies meant to ensure product

    Size of Staff ContingentThe total number of employees for CLAIM Limited is 60 located in Blantyre, Zomba, Mulanje, Balaka, Mangochi, Salima, Lilongwe, Mchinji, Mzimba, Mzuzu, Karonga and Kasungu. Most of these employees are located in various shops. The total number of CLAIM Limited employees who work at head office is 25 while those in the branches is 35.

    Being a non-profit making but serf sustaining organization, CLAIM Limited has since invested in a number of businesses. Some of the tangible investments, is the CLAIM Building. CLAIM building is a two-story building which consists of two blocks. One quarter of the building space is occupied by CLAIM offices and CLAIM bookshop while the remaining three-quarters of the building is rented out and thus provides a source of revenue.

    Our annual sales average is MK900,000,000.00. This includes sales made from CLAIM publications, other publishers products and stationery.

    To increase our visibility, we are geared to be opening four to five shops every year across the country until we have an outlet in every district. In the year 2015 we opened four more bookshops in Karonga, Salima, Mzimba and Mchinji districts. This has taken the total number of our bookshops to thirteen (13). The full list of our bookshops and their locations are as follows:

    Apart from the thirteen bookshops across the country, we also plan to open four more bookshops at Mponela, Dwangwa, Limbe and Nchalo before the end of 2017.

    We have also enhanced our d i s t r i b u t i o n network using the vehicles that we purchased in the year 2014. The five vehicles enable our Sales and Research teams to reach out to churches and schools in remote areas for the distribution of high quality hymn books and academic literature and also to research the current customer needs, demands and expectations so that we serve them better. They also enable us to take products to commissioners and agents in those areas where we do not yet have bookshops. The fleet helps us to be reliable to our customers and help them cut costs on transport when they purchase products from us.

    Our Achievement During the Past Five Years

    We have moved from being predominantly christian literature publishers and distributors to publishing and stocking academic literature for primary, secondary and tertiary levels of education.

    There are many areas in which we have made tremendous achievements in the past five years. The following are the highlights:

    1. Increased Product Portfolio to Increase Income

    CLAIM Limited has since published several junior secondary school textbooks among which seventy three (73) titles have been approved by Government of Malawi for use in secondary schools. Recently the Malawi Government has approved 80 titles for use in the Senior Secondary School level.This has increased claim s book market share to 44%.

    2. Establishing More Profitable Supply Chains

    We have made tremendous strides in this area both in

    products and services supply chains. We are now official distributors of Institute of Chartered Accountants in Malawi (ICAM), Bantley products by Kriss Offset and Screen Printers and affordable halogen cookers by Sanwecka Technologies Ltd among many others. We also distribute primary school books published by Malawi Institute of Education. In addition,

    Our shops are service points agents for DHL international (Malawi) Limited.

    We have done several donations of books and finances to various institutions like MANEB, ISAMA, Mulanje Mission Community Day Secondary School, National Archives, Zomba Theological College, Bvumbwe Rehabilitation Centre just to mention but a few.

    Within a space of five years, we have increased the academic book market share from 3% to 24% and we are aiming at growing it to 30% before the end of the year, 2017.

    4. Increase in Market Share

    We have 8 years of experience in handling big tenders, supplying and delivering various products across the country. Below are some of the notable tenders that CLAIM Limited has successfully performed for the past three years:

    1) Malawi Floods Emergency Recovery Project. This project involved the supply and delivery of education materials as well as stationery products to public primary schools across the country. The

    We have improved the outlook of our hymn books through the rebranding exercise we undertook in 2014. We continue to use the best printing houses within and outside Malawi which have so far been doing a great job at reasonable costs.

    And we have responded by keeping our prices very low to suit our customers needs. More importantly we are diversifying our product range to satisfy the needs of our customers.This is intended to make us relevant to the community we serve.

    2) A direct contract for the provision of text books to the Malawi Government through the Ministry of Education Science and Technology (MoEST). This involved the supply and delivery of secondary school textbooks to secondary schools across Malawi. The tender was worth MK502, 275, 000.00.

    We have in our fold a sales and marketing team which is always willing to reach out to all our customers through outreach sales programs. We boast of well trained customer friendly staff who will always serve with a smile and be willing to go an extra mile to ensure our customers receive a befitting service.

    CLAIM Limited has managed to train over forty teachers to become authors of academic books. These teachers have been given an opportunity to contribute knowledge to the nation, and also to make a long term investment that will earn them finances in terms of royalties. For those teaching at tertiary institutions, we have given them a chance to be published authors, which is one of the requirements for professional development.

    CLAIM Limited has introduced on the market an Arise with series of books which are designed to engage users in constructing knowledge. In brief, our Arise with series of textbooks have the following strengths:

    1. They respond to the reviewed Junior Secondary Curriculum by the Ministry of Education Science and Technology.

    2. They are a true interpretation of the various syllabi for subjects in the recently reviewed Malawi Education Curriculum.

    3. They tackle every little detail that will enrich learners academic life, while at the same time offering them an opportunity to grow.

    4. They have worthwhile activities to engage learners in a journey of self-discovery and fervent examination of the world of knowledge around them.
