Pins connect the MCU to the outside world, providing power, receiving signals and sending out signals to make something happen

Microcontrollers come in many package types with different numbers of pins and sizes. A complex system would need many inputs and outputs, so many pins. Some systems, like sensors, need to fit into a small space so need a small size.

• CPU acts as the brain of a system• Flash memory is where a list of instructions called a

program are stored that tell the CPU what to do • RAM is where temporary data is stored, e.g.

temperature readings so it knows to turn the heating down
