INTRODUCTIONWhat’s the difference between Translators and

Interpreters?

Translators translate written material from one language to another. Translators may work

within facilities who often encounter people who are not

fluent in the predominant language of the area, but they

may also work independently as people who provide their service

by the hour to individuals

Interpreters translate oral communication from one

language to another during speeches, meetings,

conferences, debates and conversation, or in court or

before administrative tribunals.

As an interpreter, you get paid to go overseas. (Yes, you might have to travel frequently but what is the harm of getting your accommodations, transportations and even meals sponsored for a nice fun trip?)

Consistent self-improvement and learningBeing a translator/interpreter naturally encourages you to read more and be readily tune into the learning mode of receiving new inputs. (You’ll learn more as you do it)It exposes a language person (linguists, educators)

to wider range of vocabulary, different fields of knowledge's (scientific, socio-cultural, etc) in the process of the work.

Contrary to many other sectors, the fields of translation and interpreting are anticipated to grow quickly within the next few years. Of course, job prospects will vary by language and specialty, but there will be more of them across the board.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of interpreters and translators is projected to increase 22 percent over the next 8 years.

The job demand will grow for translators of frequently translated languages, such as Spanish, Arabic, French, Italian, German, and Portuguese while the job demand for translators of Farsi, Chinese, Japanese and Korean is expected to grow rapidly.

Due to recent changes in legislation regarding finances and healthcare, it is expected that there will be an increase in demand for interpreters and translators specializing in healthcare, economics and law.

In addition, due to the large number of companies that have expanded internationally, the job market for business and website translators will be especially good. As per usual, because of the relatively small number of translation or interpreting opportunities in literature and the arts, these fields will remain competitive. Additionally, higher demand for interpreters and translators results directly from the broadening of international ties and the increase in the number of foreign language speakers in the United States. Both of these trends are expected to continue, contributing to relatively rapid growth in the number of jobs for interpreters and translators.Current events and changing political environments, often difficult to foresee, will increase the need for people who can work with other languages.

What is the average interpreter salary?

The average translators salary is roughly $39,000, with some professionals earning up to USD 55,000 a year.

Some people may earn even more, depending on where they work, how often they work, what their level of certification is, and what language is that they speak.

Think of it this way; if you are a translator that speaks a language that is hard to come by, you may find that though you have fewer clients, you are in higher demand because there are not a lot of people who speak the language that you do.

If you get a regular day job with a federal or government agency, you can also bet that your translator pay may be higher than if you were working for another kind of institution.
