Oracle AcademyOracle Academy—a free program that advances computer science education—works with educators across India to drive knowledge, innovation, skills development, and diversity in technology fields. The program fulfilled its commitment to reach half a million students in India annually by 2019.

FY18 at a GlanceIn 2018, Oracle Academy established key partnerships with information and communications technology (ICT) educational institutions in Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and Jharkhand to provide free computer science curricula and resources. The program also held 28 training events for educators on Java and database curricula, and engaged more than 10,000 students in the Oracle Academy Virtual Student Day.

Advancing STEAM EducationAs part of our global commitment to developing the next generation of technologists, we support nonprofit organizations focused on computer science and STEAM education. Our grant to Pratham Books funds the development and distribution of openly licensed, nonfiction, digital STEAM books on StoryWeaver, a platform that engages a readership of 100,000 annually. We also support Agastya International Foundation, Barefoot College, Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement, and Vikram A. Sarabhai Community Science Centre, all of which bring science education to students in underserved communities.

Empowering Educators Through Professional DevelopmentDeveloping and retaining good teachers is critical to student success, especially within underserved communities. Our grant to Teach for India supports the Fellowship program, a two-year, full-time teaching fellowship in underresourced schools. Championing Literacy for AllLiteracy is the key to socioeconomic mobility. We support organizations working to advance literacy and language development among underserved populations. Our support for Literacy India’s Sampurna Shiksha project brings holistic educational development to thousands of underserved children nationally. We also support Akanksha Foundation, Katha, PlanetRead, and Room to Read India Trust, which work to increase literacy among youth.

Saving Endangered SpeciesHabitat loss, climate change, and conflict with humans threaten the survival of several wildlife species. We support nonprofit organizations leading on-the-ground conservation projects, as well as education and economic incentive efforts. We are working to protect big cats with WWF India, Asiatic elephants with Nature Conservation Foundation, and Asiatic wild buffaloes with Wildlife Trust of India.

Increasing Access to Quality HealthcareOur grantees provide vital health and human services to underserved communities, including the elderly and disabled. We fund HelpAge India’s Mobile Medicare Units, serving more than 1,000 senior patients annually. Reducing Our Carbon FootprintEmissions reduction and energy efficiency are key components of our sustainability strategy. In 2018, Oracle completed construction of 125 rooftop-mounted solar photovoltaic (PV) modules at its Mumbai campus, as well as 435 solar PV modules at its Pune campus. We also implemented several projects to improve energy efficiency across our facilities and data centers in India, including energy-efficient LED lighting, cooling optimization, and data center consolidation.

Consuming Less, Conserving MoreWe are always looking for ways to minimize water consumption and waste generation across our operations. By participating in ITC’s Wellbeing Out of Waste initiative, Oracle recycles more than 70,000 kilograms of paper waste annually in India. In 2018, we installed a sewage treatment plant to treat onsite wastewater generated at the Oracle Tech Hub (OTH) in Bengaluru. The treated water is reused for landscaping, toilet flushing, and more. We also installed a rainwater harvesting system at OTH, conserving hundreds of thousands of liters of water annually.

Sustainability is inherent in the way we think about and approach nearly every aspect of our business, from operational efficiency to

product development to employee engagement. Just as our business is rapidly growing in India, so too are our sustainability efforts.
