Meet & Greet
Last night, parents had the opportunity to meet with their child’s 2019 teacher, get to know where their children’s classrooms are located and find out a little more about class routines and expectations. Open communication is vital in education – our staff care about your children and are looking forward to an amazing year supporting them in their academic, social and emotional growth. If you have any concerns, please make contact so that we can support you and your children.
Thanks P&C!
We would like to offer a huge vote of thanks to our hard-working P & C committee, who organised and ran the sausage sizzle for last night’s Meet & Greet. There were many comments of ‘yum’ and ‘Mum, can I have another one?’. It takes many hands to run these events and we value and appreciate the time and effort that our parent supporters put into making our school a great place.
Random Acts of Kindness Week – showing that we are a caring school
This week, led by our Wellbeing Officer Wendy Thompson, we have recognised Random Acts of Kindness Week. Studies have shown that kindness is indeed contagious. When a person does an act of kindness for another person, it makes the person receiving it more likely to do an act of kindness for someone else. This can unfold exponentially – like a ripple on a pond. Students have been writing down acts of kindness they see and putting them in a kindness bucket. They are showing that they notice, and perform, acts of kindness every day.
Home Reading
Home reading has begun in most classes, with students being asked to read every night for between 10 and 30 minutes. Reading at home allows your child to practice the important skills that they are learning in class and also gives them an opportunity to talk with you about books that they are reading. Reading aloud allows children to develop their expression and fluency.
Parents sometimes ask, ‘Why is this book easier than what they read in class? The answer is that the guided readers that they use in class are used to teach reading and comprehension skills. Home reading is a chance to practice these skills and should be enjoyable for parents and children!
Did you know, that by reading for just 20 minutes per day a student will read 1,800,000 words a year and read for 851 hours by the end of Year 6?
Dream Cars
Mrs Creamer has been working with all the classes to design dream cars with features that will help our environment. Some of these designs will be entered into a national competition. Our students are going to make the judges jobs very difficult! They have had some great ideas including:
• ‘grab-it’ arms to pick up rubbish and replace it with grass or a tree
• Giant vacuum cars to suck rubbish off the ocean floor
• Environmental police cars that will keep their eye on the public to make sure they are doing the right thing!
