Information correct as at 19 March.

CORONAVIRUS & HELPLINE

During the current outbreak, the Village has initiated special measures to help the community.

If individual people must be isolated, Helpline will help in two ways:

I. As the Institute is closed temporarily, the Bentham Doctors are leaving their prescriptions at the Post Office where they can be collected between 9am and 2pm

(as long as it remains open). If you need to collect a prescription from Hornby Surgery or the Post Office, you can ask Helpline for a volunteer to pick it up & deliver it to your home in Hornby, Farleton or Claughton. The volunteer will let you know at what time he/she will be calling & will leave the prescription on the doorstep, but no

contact will be made. Please clarify how/if you pay for your prescriptions.

2. If you need to order food from Hornby Village Store, the Butcher’s or the Post Office, you can order items from these places, pay by card preferably & ask Helpline for a volunteer to deliver them to the house. Again, it will be left on the step & there

will be no contact between you & the volunteer. In the event of a business having to close temporarily because of sickness or lack of custom, we cannot of course operate that part of the service.

The phone numbers for the 3 shops are:

Village Store - 22111 Butchers- 21248

Tea Rooms - 21237

The Village Shop & the Butchers have asked that customers order for several days at a time. They won’t be able to deal with requests for small quantities like loaf of

bread or half a dozen eggs day by day. Please think ahead. The Butchers have asked people to order between 8.00am & 1.00pm on

Wednesdays or Fridays. Deliveries will be ready later in the day for the Helpline vol-unteers to pick up & take to individual houses.

You will see that this support is available for only Hornby, Farleton & Claughton.

Gressingham has not been included as they have their own emergency plan.

(This is the situation as of Thursday 19th March but things may have changed by the time that you read Contact of course.)

I would like to thank the 7 additional people who have volunteered to help us during this emergency. We could still do with further offers from younger people &

anyone who lives in Claughton.

To ask for help, phone Helpline’s dedicated number (07526 509 027)

Please give us plenty of time to organise this operation.

HORNBY HELPLINE

We are here to assist the residents of the parish of Hornby with Farleton with a variety of issues including:

· Trips to the Doctors, Hospital or Vets · Minor home repairs · Computer problems · Help after illness or surgery ASKING FOR HELP

a) Phone the Institute Monday – Saturday between 10.00am and 12.00pm (015242 22227) to ask for what you need.

If the job requires transport to be arranged, please could you give 48 hours’ notice, and more notice would be even more appreciated.

(I’m afraid that we can’t run as an emergency service as the coordinators and volunteers aren’t always free to respond immediately. Some are at work and others may just be out for the day.)

b) Please don’t ask the volunteer who helps you the first time to come on subsequent occasions as we try to spread out every-one’s tasks equally. Just phone the Institute as above.

Please note that whilst we don’t offer a taxi service, if you are having genuine difficulty attending functions IN THE VILLAGE or are afraid to go out after dark then please give us a call.

HORNBY POOL A bigger splash!

Weekend Swimming The revised Saturday Morning swimming sessions have been generally well received and more afternoon private parties are being booked.

Sunday morning ‘Fun-day’ continues to attract more families. Of course, it’s early days and we are constantly monitoring and tweaking to suit demand. Keep spreading the word! With more public swimmers taking full advantage of the range of activi-ties on offer we have recently issued a revised timetable. Just look at our comprehensive schedule, it’s available on Facebook or at the pool reception along with a copy of a dedicated promotional brochure for general distribution. (See also page opposite).

Away from the water our dynamic poolside teaching team recently held a very successful Family Bingo and games night in Hornby.

Thank you to everyone who organised, donated prizes, supported, at-tended or helped in any way with this family-friendly night. A great night and a superb result which raised a very welcome £500 for pool funds. If we are missing opportunities, please let us know. It's your pool, tell us what you want.

As we go to press the Lune Valley swimming pool is operating as normal but as government advice changes and demand falls we may well have to close. Please check our Facebook page and website for updates.

Please call in anytime or check our colourful website and Facebook as follows.

WEDDING FAYRE & PRE-LOVED EVENT The Wedding Fayre in February at Hornby Village Institute went better than we could have anticipated. Lots of people came into the building and made positive comments about its size and facilities. We are sure that the good numbers were in part due to an article that appeared in the Lancaster Guardian about the Wedding Fayre, a con-cert by some musicians from the Haffner Orchestra and afternoon teas all for the same weekend to raise funds to repair the Institute roof.

Our grateful thanks to all those who helped us raise the great sum of £1521.00.

HORNBY-WITH-FARLETON PARISH COUNCIL 12th March 2020 meeting

Lancashire County Council are now pressing ahead with their plan to widen the existing eastern footway over the bridge, which will bring with it a ‘No Waiting At Any Time’ yellow line restriction. If you would like to comment on this you can view the plan at the below web ad-dress and email your comments to:

[email protected] www.lancashire.gov.uk/roads-parking-and-travel/roads/roadworks-and-traffic-regulation-orders/permanent.aspx

We would like to wish you all well during these scary and uncertain times. If you need help with anything, big or small, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

As you all know, the institute is closed until further notice, so we will release the details of our next meeting as and when we have them.

Take care of yourselves and those around you.

IT’S SERVICE - BUT NOT AS USUAL!

Well, I didn’t expect that! A church service at St Margaret’s on Sunday 15th March was ‘live streamed’ – how wonderfully modern.

Michael, the vicar, wanted people to be able to join with the congregation even when in their own homes. So, we had his laptop sitting at the front beaming the service into many homes. Then we had single use communion cups – reminded me of my days in the Baptist church. And hand sanitiser readily available for use as we entered.

Everything possible was done to keep us, and the village, safe.

The service was really good too. I enjoyed ‘As the deer pants’ – one of my favourite hymns, and even though our numbers were a little down the singing seemed to fill the church. Added to that prayers and a sermon meant it was church as usual – yet, not as usual.

Trying times call for trying new methods and I think on Sunday they worked!

ROTARY CLUB OF LUNESDALE What a difficult and unpredictable time we are all now facing more so because this is a new virus with little known about it.

It was hoped that The Defenders concert would be an enjoyable even-ing with a complete sell out. When the decision was made to postpone The Defenders concert it was not an easy one to make because at that time nobody could fore-see the seriousness of the Coronavirus threat. However, it proved to be a wise decision. It is planned and hoped that when things are back to normal the con-cert will be rescheduled. As with all other clubs, organisations, etc,. Rotary meetings are no longer taking place and will only be resumed when it is deemed safe to do so. At the time of writing uncertainty is rife and we all must take heed of the advice being given to us by the government and the medical experts. We look forward to life getting back to normal, meantime we will give a helping hand where we can until that time arrives. With best wishes to you all from President Dave and the members of the Rotary Club at this seriously difficult time. Keep safe. Lilian

If you would like a table to sell your crafts, or advertise your local group or interest, please ring Graham or Jane on 01524 770919 or email [email protected] before Friday 17th April.

The price for a table for the morning should be no more than £5.00 and quite possibly less.

We are looking forward to seeing everyone again for what has become a convivial, annual village event.

CATON LEISURE CLUB

Given the current situation with the Corona Virus the committee have de-cided to cancel all meetings of the Caton Leisure Club from 16th March until September including the trip to Ripon and chair based exercise. Any-one who has paid for the trip to Ripon will be refunded in due course.

As we come to the end of the Spring Term, the Juniors are still learning about India. Their topic delves into all aspects of the culture including Bollywood Dance, Indian painting and tasting Indian food. The children have also carried out a traffic survey in Hornby and have since written to the council to ask them to install a Zebra Crossing – their letters were very persuasive so watch this space! The Upper Juniors have also had the opportunity to take part in Bikeability a two-day course that gives them some experience of cycling safely, first in the playground and then on some of the quieter roads. In the other side of the school, the Infants have been thinking about clothes, what they wear and what generations of children have worn before them. They are also enjoying a reading challenge and are being introduced to the challenge of fractions. Thank-you to those who supported our Jumble Sale. Although we had many donations, unfortunate timing meant that attendance was down and we didn’t make as much money as we hoped. However, every penny counts, and we hope to see you at the next one. A massive thank-you to every one of our school staff who have been working hard to prepare materials for our children to do some home learning over the next few weeks. We appreciate everything that you do for our children.

KEEPING FARLETON RESIDENTS IN TOUCH WITH EACH OTHER

We realise that as part of the broader community, Farleton residents form a small area which could feel isolated in the current pandemic.

To try and ensure we can stay connected even while we practice so-cial distancing, Parish councillors John Towse and John Towers (confusing, isn’t it!) encourage near neighbours to share contacts de-tails and keep a friendly lookout on each other.

If you need help with this, we have created a local email address. You can send an email to “[email protected]” to let us know your name(s), address and contact number so we can try and put people together. If you’re not great with email, you should be able to send a text from a mobile using this address instead of a number, and we’ll get your message that way.

We won’t share your details with anyone without your permission.
