A Workshop for Writers
Coronado is celebrating its 125th anniversary as an incorporated city. Within those years lies a rich literary history. One of the earliest authors was L. Frank Baum, who escaped the harsh winters of the Midwest in the early 1900s after writing “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.” Coronado also appears as a setting in two young adult books by L. Frank Baum about “The Flying Girl”, influenced by the birth of naval aviation. Several of Baum’s other books in the Oz series were written while spending the winters here. Over time, Coronado was the home or vacation spot to many authors including police novelist Joseph Wambaugh, fantasy and science fiction writer Richard Matheson, Charles Nordhoff who wrote “Mutiny on the Bounty” with H.N. Hall, short story writer Ambrose Bierce and poet Landis Everson. The environs of this beautiful coastal community has been a rich source of inspiration, and will continue to be a place where writers find a home. The Coronado Cultural Arts Commission supports the literary community in our region with its 2nd Writers Workshop on October 3, a day of 12 sessions, 21 presenters, a keynote address by award winning author Ron Carlson, manuscript reviews and consultations, “Tables of Common Interest” over lunch, and a wine and cheese reception following the close of the day at Bay Books located at 1029 Orange Avenue. We hope you will register to attend and hear some of the best writers and teachers talk about social media and marketing, self-publishing, new writing techniques, the importance of revision, and how to find your audience if you are writing memoirs or thrillers. Take your writing to the next level or fine-tune your skills with new ideas at the Coronado Writers Workshop.
WINE RECEPTION: Bay Books -1029 Orange Avenue 5 - 7 p.m.
Coronado’s independent bookseller and sponsor of this workshop, Bay Books, welcomes attendees to a Meet & Greet Wine Reception with presenters following the close of the workshop. Presenters’ books will be available for purchase and signing.

Wri ng Techniques: POV ‐ Point of View Cornelia Feye
Point of View (POV) is one of the most powerful and most confusing tools in the
crea ve wri ng tool box. As in real life, expressing different points of views skillfully
adds depth and dimension to any story. This workshop will introduce the different
types and effects of various points of view. Par cipants will receive a wri ng
prompt of a scene involving several characters. Each par cipant will be assigned a
different character from the scene, which will enable them to write from their
character’s point of view. We will then read the completed one‐page perspec ves
aloud, to hear the scene unfold in the voices of all the par cipants. No prepara on
necessary, but please come prepared to write and read!
Cornelia received a Master’s Degree in Art History and Anthropology from the
University of Tὒbingen, Germany. She was educator for the Jacques Marchais
Museum of Tibetan Art, Staten Island, and has taught at UCSD, Mesa, Miracosta
and Grossmont Colleges. She is currently the Arts Educa on Director at the
Athenaeum Music and Arts Library in La Jolla. In the 1970s she traveled around
India, the Middle East and South America for seven years and her adventures have
found their way into her wri ng. Her art mystery “Spring of Tears” was published in
2011 and won the San Diego Book Award in mystery. Her second novel, “House of
the Fox,” is set in the Anza Borrego Desert and San Diego.
The Nuts and Bolts of Self‐Publishing Tina Erwin and Laura Van Tyne Crystal Pointe Media, Inc.
Even if your manuscript is not finished, it is me to be thinking about publishing
your book. What makes a great book cover? When should I start marke ng? What

self‐publishing and ensure that you retain all of your rights and royal es.
Tina Erwin and Laura Van Tyne are co‐founders of Crystal Pointe Media, Inc., a

Finding a Hook for Your Book: Gaining an Edge on Publicity Lynne Kennedy
Wri ng the Truth, Crea vely
Your book is special. It is unique. It is you. How do you convince the world of
readers that they want to read your book? By finding a hook‐‐ a broad brush
concept for your book, or series of books, and a fine‐tuned angle appropriate to
one specific book. Then, use these “hooks” to advance your publicity efforts, et
voilá, book sales! With a Masters’ Degree in Science and more than 28 years as a
science museum director, Lynne Kennedy had the opportunity to study history and
forensic science, both of which play significant roles in her novels. She has wri en
four award‐winning historical mysteries, each solved by modern technology. Her

many loyal readers and fans. Visit her website at lynnekennedymysteries.com
“Truth is stranger than fic on,” right? Nonfic on wri ng draws far more readers
and sells more to publishers than fic on, for a reason: we are riveted by well‐told
true stories. We’ll discuss the various forms of nonfic on wri ng, the necessity of
knowing both journalis c and interviewing techniques, and ways to use fic on
wri ng skills such as plo ng, character development, foreshadowing, and
dialogue/quotes to enhance your ar cles and books. You will learn clear ideas an
outline for the start of your query le er to a publisher or agent.

years at the San Diego Museum of Man, where she received a na onal award as
an innovator in educa on, and most recently she re red as Execu ve Director of
the Coronado Historical Associa on, where she gained insigh ul knowledge of the
