In this hand-on class, professional photographer
Paul Schmitt will show you strategies that can make
your phone a useful tool for serious photography.
All smartphones are welcome, though particular
emphasis will be placed on iPhone capabilities.
The class will include both indoor instruction and
hands-on practice in the Plantations Botanical
Garden. Please bring your own smartphone to class.

with special emphasis on autumn foliage color.

Fall Plant SaleSATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 22; 9:00 A.M. TO 4:00 P.M.
Take home some of Plantations gardeners’ top
picks for your own home landscape!
FEE: Free. LOCATION: Cornell Plantations Plant Production Facility, 397 Forest Home Drive
Rain GardensSATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 8; 10:00 A.M. TO 12:00 P.M.
What can you do to help our streams? You can
create a rain garden - a shallow, vegetated
depression that collects, absorbs, cools, and filters
the stormwater runoff before it reaches our waters.
Stormwater from impermeable surfaces can be
redirected through dry creek beds, vegetated
swales, or drain pipes into beautiful rain gardens
designed with native plants, that once established
require little or no maintenance. A rain garden is an
inexpensive, relatively simple way to do your part
in keeping our waters clean while simultaneously
adding value and beauty to your yard.
Pre-registration is required.
INSTRUCTOR: Nikki Cerra, Natural Areas Manager FEE: $24 ($20 members and Cornell students) LOCATION: Nevin Welcome Center
The Art of Stone-WallingSATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 29; 10:00 A.M. TO 4:00 P.M.
Have you been thinking about building or repairing
a stone wall, but didn’t know where to begin? This
hands-on class will get you started. The morning
session will cover the basics—types of walls,
foundations, general rules, tools and materials.
We’ll also inspect a variety of stonework at
Cornell Plantations. In the afternoon we’ll practice
constructing an actual dry-laid stone wall. You’ll
learn basic construction techniques, including how
to put up batter boards, make a foundation, chip
and cut stone, and lay quarried stone. Please wear
outdoor work clothes and sturdy shoes, and bring a
bag lunch, leather gloves and safety glasses if you
have them.
Pre-registration is required.

Magic in a Glass: Beer Making at HomeSATURDAY, OCTOBER 13; 1:00 P.M. TO 4:00 P.M.
Beer is the world’s oldest and most popular alcoholic
beverage. And while technology has changed over
the years, the basic science and processes are the
same today as those used by ancient peoples. If
you’re interested in learning more about the process
of brewing your own, but aren’t sure where to start,
this class is for you. Join Plantations gardener and
home brewer Glenn Bucien for this introduction to
the art and science of beer making. This class will
cover the history of beer, the scientific principles
behind its production, tips on how to grow your own
hops, and the basic tools, equipment, and materials
you will need to start creating your own magic in
a glass. Several home brews will be available for
tasting. Participants must be 21 years of age or older and be
able to provide proof of age. Pre-registration is required.

Landscape For Life5 SATURDAYS: MARCH 2, 9, 16, 23 & 30, 2013;10:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M.
Every home landscape has the potential to
clean air and water, reduce flooding, cool your
community, combat climate change and alleviate
the pressures being placed on Earth’s ecosystems.
Yet conventional gardening practices too often
work against nature, damaging the environment’s
ability to provide these natural benefits that support
the health and well-being of you, your family, and
your community. The 5-part Landscape For Life
program, developed by the U.S. Botanical Garden
and the Ladybird Johnson Wildflower Center at the
University of Texas at Austin, shows you how to
work with nature in your garden, no matter where
you live, whether you garden on a city or suburban
lot, a 20–acre farm, or the common area of your
condominium. It’s possible to create a great–
looking sustainable landscape that’s healthier for
you, your family, your pets, and the environment ---
and that saves you time and money! Participants in
this program will receive a Certificate in Sustainable
Home Landscape Design from Cornell Plantations.
Pre-registration is required and you must attend all
5 sessions in order to receive the certificate.
INSTRUCTOR: Joshua Whitney, Gardener FEE: $120 ($100 members and Cornell students) INFO: For more information about the Landscape for Life Program and the Sustainable Sites Initiative, please visit landscapeforlife.org. LOCATION: Nevin Welcome Center
