The SHBD kickoff is set for 7:00 pm on Thursday, March 4, 2010.

The purpose of the kickoff is to inform Unit and Club heads as well as all new Shriners and Ladies of their respective store assignments and new procedures being implemented for the scheduled collection days of April 30 and May 1. We are implementing changes to help assist the Clubs and Units to staff the majority of high traffic stores in the metro area. We are also creating a new Assignment Team to staff additional stores. The goal is to increase our store collections by 50%. Potentate Cary Manson is asking all new Shriners, from at least the last three years, to come to this kickoff meeting to get more information. Come and ask questions.

To quote the Illustrious Potentate Manson, “We need everyone’s help.”

Snacks will be provided.

Shrine Hospital Benefit Days Kickoff

February has been a busy month. A big thank you to everyone who worked so hard on the Circus. Lady Toddy and several other Divan members and I have been busy going to several potentate balls representing Tangier. March will also be a busy month. We will need everyone’s help with the Corned Beef and Cabbage dinner. We are looking forward to partying with you at the Potentates Ball. Thanks from the 2010 Tangier Divan for all of the Nobility’s help with our projects.

Fraternally Yours,

Cary L Manson

Do you know what type of blood you have? Would it possibly be O Negative? If so, and you are not currently a regular donor--we need your blood. You might ask why O Negative is so important. The reason is simple: your blood can be used by anyone who needs blood. Yes, O Negative is the universal blood type . If you or any of your friends have O Negative blood try to get them to the next blood drive at Tangier.

When your read this article the blood drive held on February 15th will be history. Our goal for this drive was 25 pints of whole blood. To reach that goal we should have at least 30 individuals register to donate on that drive. You will hear about in the April Hot Sands.

The blood drive for May will be on May 11th. We told you a few months ago that we try to change the date from the third Monday to the second Monday. The reason for this is that the Scottish Rite monthly meeting is on the third Monday and there are several donors who are active in the Scottish Rite. I will confirm this date for you in the April Hot Sands.

In checking some information provided for me prior to each drive I found that Jim Gathmann has reached the 9 gallon level and Arnie Nelson has reached his 2nd gallon. Congratulations to both of these regular donors. I will try to keep you informed as donors reach different levels.

By: Charlie Binge, President

March is here- can spring flowers be far away? I hope by the time you read this the snow will be melted and we can see the grass again.

The Circus is over for another year and I would like to thank all the Arab Patrol members who attended and worked the many performances. Your dedication should be applauded. During March, the Arab Patrol will meet on March 8th and March 22nd at 7:00 pm in the Aladdin Room. March will be a busy month. On March 9th, our past president Jon Christensen will chair a Shrine Hospital Benefits Day meeting at 7:00 pm in the Main Room. On March 10th, the Arab patrol with their Ladies will host the Hamburger night. Serving will start at 5:30 pm. On March 11, there will be a Tangier Shrine Center dinner and meeting starting at 6:15 pm. On March 17th, Tangier’s famous Corned Beef and Cabbage Dinner from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm. Arab Patrol and their Ladies will work the first shift upstairs serving from 10:00 am-2:30 pm. Some of us will also work downstairs in the Kitchen and upstairs on the serving line. It usually is a long day but also a fun one.

The last item for March is the Potentate’s Ball to be held March 27th and 28th at the Embassy Suites in the Old Market. This is a time to relax and celebrate with our Potentate Cary Manson.

On Saturday, April 24th, The Arab Patrol will host a Mexican Fiesta night. Look for our ad elsewhere in the Hot Sands. We will be cooking in the kitchen all day on the 23rd and 24th. If you like to cook, please join us for fun and fellowship. Lastly, think membership: support and attend your Blue Lodges.

Arab PatrolBy: Jim Jacobson Well February is a very busy

month for B &C.On February 13th we had our Annual White

Tails banquet. We served over 400 hungry hunters. Special thanks to Mike Dudzinski for his many years of chairing this project. I would also like to thank the Auctioneer Crew for their many years of donated participation with a special call out to Larry Shepard.

I would like to thank the Divan for showing up in force: Greg Hadcock, Daryl Finley & Charlie Lovell. It is said their table spent more money on Orange hats than any other table. Thanks – it means a lot to us!!

We are now looking forward to a successful Circus. I know Boone & Crockett will be there in numbers as usual. Future projects are Hospital days, fishing trips & fish fry. Contact any Boone officer for details or see our flyer in the Lounge.

Buying Vans is what we do.

Boone & Crockett Tangier BandBy: Dave Krecek On January 27th we lost a

loyal and very active Tangier Noble. Wayne D. Hanson joined Tangier in 1974 and was a member of the Tangier Band for 35 years and Band Captain. He was also a member of the Legion of Honor, Flying Fez, and the Tangier Radio Club. One of his passions was to play Frosty the Snowman and other Christmas tunes on his trumpet with the Tangier Chanters on their bus trips when they visited nursing homes and the Omaha Home for Boys. He will be missed by the many friends he had in Tangier.

Even though we have recently added several new members to the band, we are always looking for brass, woodwind, and percussion players to join the band. Even if you haven’t played for a long time, you should get out the axe, tune it up, and sit in on a practice to see how much fun it is to play the good old Sousa, King and Fillmore marches, polkas, Dixieland, and show tunes we have in our repertoire. You say you don’t have the old instrument? We can get you one. Just give Dave Krecek 697-9200, or Lauren Faist 392-7827 a call and we can get the times and dates to you or instrument if you need one.

Again and again, our members come out to TCC meetings in force; we always seem to fill the room. Great support! We also want to offer our congratulations to Illustrious Sir Cary and Lady Toddy and the entire Divan for what we know will be a great year for Tangier and its members.

As we read this article, the Tangier Shrine Circus will be in progress or just finishing up. A BIG thank you goes out to all that participated and helped with our biggest event of the year.

Be sure to get your tickets and attend this year’s St. Patrick’s Day Feed, March 17th for some great Corned Beef and Cabbage. YUMMY!

Everyone, please mark your calendar for this main event. Let’s show our support for Potentate Cary Manson and his Lady Toddy and attend the Potentate’s Ball at Embassy Suites March 27th and 28th. It will be a GRAND time. Check your Hot Sands for all the particulars.

On a sad note, our thoughts and prayers go out to our brother Jim Brown and his Lady Ranee as they mourn the passing of Ranee’s father.

Thanks to all our members for making TCC one of the best clubs around. Any Noble interested in becoming a member, please give us a call. Gerry @ 669-0450, Larry @ 598-8466 and Barry @ 616-5862.

Golden GirlsBy: Maxine Lorraine Powers

St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, is the one day of the year when many persons (regular Joes and Janes) become Irish even though they are not of Irish descent. It’s a good reason to celebrate. As many of you know, officially, St. Patrick’s Day is observed by the Irish in honor of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland.

The two big Shrine events this month are the Corned Beef and Cabbage Dinner on St. Patrick’s Day, and on the 27th and 28th, the Potentate’s Ball and Breakfast. Some of our Golden Girls will be attending the ball and breakfast as well as lending a hand with the St. Patrick’s Day dinner, in addition to enjoying the tasty food!

Golden Girls will gather for their monthly luncheon on Tuesday, the 9th. Same time and place – noon in the lower level (Oasis room) of the Shrine Center. Hope you can attend. The food is delicious and better yet – see your friends and engage in interesting conversations.

Happy Birthday to Lil Jackson and Margaret Kirby. May both of you enjoy many more healthful, happy birthdays.

One hour’s sleep will be missed on Sunday, March 14, when we fast-forward our timepieces in compliance with Daylight Saving Time. Don’t forget! Otherwise, you could be late for an important event!

Citizens of the United Kingdom will be observing Mothering Sunday on March 14. Brit terminology for Mother’s Day listed on my unique calendar.

Spring is just around the corner. Warmer weather and bright sunlight will be a very welcome relief from a winter most of us will not soon forget. Surviving this winter proves you are not a member of the weak and puny clan.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day to all of you, until next month.

Daughtersof the Nile

By: Queen Sue

The January Ceremonial went very well, ending the day with a reception to honor

Past Queens of Sat’ra Temple. Seven new members were initiated and some have already

come to Session and joined Units. I would again like to welcome them and say how great it

is they are getting active. Daughters of the Nile is a wonderful fraternal organization to belong

to with such a great purpose “Working to help Shrine Children”.

The next Session is March 4th, lunch 11:30, and session 1:00 pm. It will be a busy day

with election of officers and the household delegates, also the memorial service. That evening

is a dinner and reception honoring the new officers at Anthony’s restaurant.

My reign as Queen is almost over and it has been a privilege and honor to serve Sat’ra

Temple. This last year has been a great success! We repeated some of the traditional fundraisers, and tried some new ones. I was very fortunate to have much assistance from Past Queens, Officers, and Ladies of the Household. They served on committees, worked on fundraisers, helped to set-up and prepare for sessions and ceremonials, handled reservations, provided decorations, served meals, sold raffle tickets, and served as pro tems when needed. The Officers, Pages, and Ceremonial Assistants did an outstanding job. The Units and Clubs are so important to create involvement from our members. The Units provided wonderful performances and we had several new clubs formed. The Supreme Queen was impressed with the outstanding job of the Membership Committee and what a great success the Garden Walk has become. Many provided help with donations and support of our Temple events. It takes all of us, working together to have such a successful year and I want to thank all of you for everything you did or gave.

We would like to thank Potentate Cary Manson for installing our elected officers for 2010. He and Lady Toddy visited with us afterwards, and shared information about the Twin Cities Hospital future plans. They also explained the purpose behind the design of their lapel pin (designed by their daughter), and spoke of some of their plans for Tangier this year. We really appreciate their support.

We will be serving the pie slices at Hamburger Night on March 10th, so hope to see many of you there. Hopefully by then the weather will be a little warmer.

Thanks to Kathleen Dickey and Joe Carter for all the pop tabs you collect for us, and also all the other people who leave them at the office, but don’t leave their name--we really do appreciate it.

Hey – summer’s coming – sometime. Just keep your shovels handy. They have really been put to good use thus far this season. It seems a bit irritating though to have our local weather outdone by events in the East.

March should be an interesting month for the Chanters. We will enjoy singing at a reception in Council Bluffs honoring the installation of fellow Chanter Noble Bryan Howland as Grand Tyler of Iowa. The Potentates Ball in Omaha is on March 17th and the Chanters have been honored with a request to lend their voices at the beginning of the Ball.

A request from the Commander of Units and a curiosity regarding the history of the Chanters began a search which has provided an interesting outcome. Information from the Chanter Musical Director Noble Terry Theis and steered by Noble Walt Mailand provided the appropriate starting point.

The history is available to all at Tangier Shrine. The Chanters were organized in 1923 by a small group of Nobles to provide a unit for those who wished to have a good time making music. Through the years the Chanter unit has sung for waiting travelers at railroad stations, inmates at the city and county jails, Shrine Ceremonials, Eastern Star installations, as well as competing nationally with other Chanter units. The Chanters have also presented concerts for the public and the Masonic family.

The Tangier Shrine Chanters have a strong national reputation having won many competitions.

This last year marked the completion of the 82nd annual Christmas tour which consists of singing in a variety of venues.

The Chanters rehearse weekly on Monday nights. Membership is open to any Shriner in good standing who enjoys singing and performing.

March is upon us – spring is just around the corner. This has been a tough winter with the snow and cold.

Thank you to those Hospital Float members who helped with taking tickets at the Circus.

Lady Carol Plummer is home and recovering after several hospitalizations this winter.

Happy Birthday wishes to the following Nobles and Ladies for March: Nobles Dean Anderson, Don Harrington, Todd Davison; and Ladies Barbara Anderson and Carol Hale.

Congratulations to Noble Andy Winslow who was installed as Worthy Patron of Aksarben Chapter, OES and Lady Maggie Ferryman who was installed as Worthy Matron of Narcissus Chapter OES in January.

First of all I want to apologize to you for not having an article in the February Hot Sands.

Although I may be the last, I do want to congratulate our new Illustrious Sir Cary Manson and his Lady Toddy. We wish you and your Divan nothing but the best in 2010.

I can’t believe we made it through the month of February. It will take most of this month to rest up.

We planned to dust off Ole 357 and make it over to the HyVee stores in Council Bluffs and South Omaha to promote the Circus. Will let you know how that went next month. Also the 357 Dinner and the Circus.

Birthdays for March are Lawrence Busboom, Lady Pat and Ron Calvin, Lady Betty Johnson and Lady Laurel Wolfe.

You know you are old when you idea of weight lifting is standing up.

Legion of HonorBy: Larry Moody

First of all this month I’m sorry to report the passing of long time Legion of Honor member Wayne Hanson. Wayne passed away January 27th after a long illness. Our condolences to his family. He will be missed.

February 13th was our annual Commanders Fez Ball, where we honor our Commander for the New Year. Congratulations to Tom Sorensen and his lady Gussie; Tom will be an outstanding Commander! Thank you to all the dignitaries from the International Legion of Honor, Central States Legion of Honor, our Divan, and all the fine guests that attended the ball and helped wish our Commander and officers a successful year. Thank you to the Fez Ball Committee and all the people that made it a great event.

By the time you read this the 2010 Tangier Shrine Circus will be another memory. Thank you to all the Brothers in our unit that supported our unit and carried the flags so proudly. The Ladies and family of the Legion of Honor are also due a big thanks. It takes many people to accomplish such a task, and we have one of the best groups within the Shrine.

Sunday April 11th we have our first Biscuit and Gravy Feed. Please put that date on your calendar. Speaking from experience, this is a great breakfast, great price, and great friends and family to share it with. A thank you to all the Legion of Honor Nobles and their Ladies that make all of our events possible and entertaining. And of course a big thanks to all of the people that come out to support our events, it is so nice to have events that when you walk around the room people are smiling and laughing. It makes it all worthwhile.

March 27th and 28th will be the Potentate’s Ball. The Legion of Honor will once again be there to perform our duty for Illustrious Sir Cary L. Manson and Lady Toddy . We wish him and the Tangier Divan all the success for 2010.

New Nobles, and not so new Nobles, if you’re a veteran and interested in joining our unit, please feel free to come to one of our meetings the first Tuesday of the month at 7:00 pm downstairs at the Shrine center and see what we are about.

By: Joe Stom

Wow! What a winter we have had so far. Hopefully spring will be here soon. As bad as the winter months have been, it hasn’t put a damper on our activities. Mardi Gras was a great success. The Director’s Staff and the Staffettes put on a fantastic party, and Frank Bianco cooked an awesome Cajun meal. I would like to thank everyone who helped put Mardi Gras together and also to everyone who came out to support us.

The big event on the horizon, as most of us know, is SDA. SDA is the annual Director’s Staff convention, and all Shriners are welcome to attend. SDA is being hosted by Abou Ben Adhem Shrine in Springfield, Missouri. The convention takes place April 21st through April 24th, 2010. An important part of SDA is the stunt competition, which gives us a chance to show off our second section stunts, and to watch the other Shrine centers from across the country perform their stunts. It is a great time, and a great way to meet Brothers from all over the United States and Canada. If you would like to attend, please contact Bob Burbee or myself and we will be glad to get you registered. The deadline to register is March 21st.

I would like to welcome our newest members to the Director’s Staff; Jeff Hoagland, Aaron Taylor, and Steve Hurlbutt and lady Jill. They have already jumped right in and become active. We look forward to having you both around. Congratulations.

Our Sunshine report includes Chris Larson, Don Morgan, Harvey Hansen, Bob Janacek, and Lad Pokorny. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

Directors Staff GreetersBy: Lou Worm

Fly the Friendly Skies of Tangier where Shrine Kids Fly Free!

Illustrious Sir Cary Manson and Lady Toddy have asked the Greeters and Greeter Gals to provide and serve refreshments in the Hospitality Room at the Potentates Ball. We hope you all make plans to help make this a successful event.

Some Greeters will also be needed to hand out packets to the visiting dignitaries. Remember, Ball registration deadline is March 6th. We are also selling $5.00 Raffle Tickets good for two registrations and a hotel room. Randy Busse is Chairman of this project.

Director John James thanks all the Greeters and Greeter Gals who worked the Circus. The Circus Appreciation Dinner is March 2nd. A special thank you to Circus Chairman Don Goure!

Hamburger and Pie Night is March 3rd - only three days after the Circus. This is the kind of loyal cooperation that makes us proud to be Greeters.

Our Business meeting is March 9th at Tangier. Meals are $10 which includes coffee, home-made bread, desserts, tax and tip. Thanks to the Greeter Gals for providing appetizers. With reasonably priced drinks at Tangier you won’t find a better bargain in the area. See you all at the March meeting!

We will need Greeters at the doors for the March 11th Temple meeting. Remember St Pats Corned Beef & Cabbage on March 17th at Tangier.

Think new members - Keep Tangier Shrine Strong!

Motor ABy: Dick Chilton

Here it is March already (by time this goes out). It really is difficult to write in past and present tense.

First, I must apologize for failing to mention Karen McCauley’s birthday in last month’s article. It was February 4th. I did get ribbed at our meeting which we held at the Millard Road House (best chicken in town), so wanted to make sure I mentioned it. Our Divan representative Chuck Sohm was present, and we are very glad he could join us. A good time was had and a productive meeting was held. We talked about helping in the Toy room at the Circus; some of the ladies will sell tokens. If you are interested in joining us please call Larry or me. We would love to have you join us at one our first Monday of the month meetings.

Larry and I are going to be getting our mascot car ready for the parades this year (if it ever stops snowing). Micah will be driving it; he is anxiously waiting.

Our hamburger night with Jo-De-Ra and Bethel #53 went well. We are all teaming up again on March 24th.

Think spring. It may come sooner or later.

Jo-De-RaBy: Ray Duerfeldt

As I write this, the outside temperature is zero, I just finished clearing the driveway, and find myself longing for spring. For those Nobles that are a bit unsure of what JoDeRa Cavaliers are and what they do, here is a brief refresher. The unit is made up of Tangier Nobles with parade worthy convertibles who work with the major youth organizations by providing them with transportation in the Tangier parades. JObs Daughters, DEmolay, and RAinbow members ride with us in parades. Including these groups in the Tangier parades helps to give public recognition to these fine youth groups. We also provide college scholarships to Nebraska high school seniors affiliated with one of the above groups. Gary Churchill has again graciously agreed to head up the committee that will be evaluating the applications.

We are looking for a few good Nobles to join our unit. Your convertible can be new, vintage, classic, or anything in between. We are not allowed to do burnouts, drive in figure eights, or display any of our other unique driving talents, but try to drive in a reasonably straight line. We meet at Jerico’s restaurant at 6:30 pm on the first Monday of every month. Please call Ray Duerfeldt at 963-4061, or email him at [email protected] if you would like more details about becoming a member.

We had a successful hamburger night with Motor A, and had a great turnout of our members. Special thanks to Jeff Mann on the grill, and Bob Krause on the fryers. They got a real workout.

Until next time, keep the shiny side up, the dirty side down, and think spring.

Mo-Ri ShrineBy: Noble Don: Boy did we ever have a great turnout for

our January 18, 2010 Annual Meeting. With forty plus Nobles, Ladies and Associates on hand, President Richard started MO-RI off on a very positive note. Committees are in place, the annual financial report has been filed with Tangier and the sailing looks great for another outstanding year. All of the 2010 officers have agreed on the same salary they have received for many years which is nothing short of just being proud of our Club and the accomplishments they hope to create in 2010 with the membership’s help.

The officers of MO-RI send a special Thank You to each of the MO-RI members who found time and energy to support the 2010 Tangier Circus. Your efforts were appreciated and no doubt each of you were humbled by the experience of seeing the smiles on so many children’s faces.

Remember, Sunday March 28 is Palm Sunday and it is also the date that MO-RI and Washington Lodge have historically hosted the Palm Sunday pancake, egg and sausage breakfast at the Blair NE Masonic Lodge. Obviously, we need all of the help the membership can provide. Most importantly, we each were issued four tickets to use or share with a friend or neighbor. The funds generated by the sale of those tickets goes directly to the success of the Pancake Feed. Any realized profit is split between the Lodge and MO-RI for continuing projects. Please return your check for $20.00 if you have not yet done so.

Tangier PiratesBy: Steve Cash, Captain

Circus, Circus, Circus!!!! What a time it was. Thanks to all who sold tickets, ads, and came down to help out with selling programs and signing autographs. The Mardi Gras party that Director Staff put on was a blast. Can I have another hurricane please?

Coming up we have our annual Corn Beef and Cabbage dinner. Please come out and help – it would be greatly appreciated.

Dues cards have been sent out. Thanks to all who have paid your dues and if you have not please do so.

Pote’s ball is coming up this month. If you plan on attending you need to get your reservation in by March 6th. We are planning on doing our Pirate hospitality room again this year. It will be on Friday March 26th. Come stop by for some snacks and drinks with some good company.

ProvostBy: Ron Barber, Secretary

As I’m writing this article we are facing more snow conditions and I’m sure everyone is wishing that spring would hurry up an make an early appearance.

We are pleased to welcome our newest member into Provost Guard. He is Darren Malott. Welcome Darren. By the time this goes to press he will have been properly initiated by helping at the Circus.

Our new Officers and Captains are off and running with plans for the coming year. Our thanks to everyone that helped at the Circus. This is a huge undertaking on everyone’s part but at the end of the weekend we can all be proud of the effort that was put forth by everyone and their Ladies and know that this is for the kids we help. A special thanks to all the Provost - you did GREAT.

Corn Beef and Cabbage dinner will be held on March 17th. We will need all Provost Guard that can make it to help with parking.

Mother’s Day Breakfast/Brunch on May 9th is fast approaching and plans are coming together. This is a lot of work but also a lot of fun times are had by all as we work together. Last year’s first Breakfast was great and this year’s will be even better. Hope to see you all there.

Parade season starts on Saturday May 8th with the Florence Day Parade and as always the Provost will be there lining everyone up.

The Potentate’s Ball will be held on March 27th and the 28th. Plan to attend if you can and Fly the Friendly Skies of Tangier. A Great time will be had by all. See the Hot Sands for all the info.

Any member of Tangier Shrine considering membership in the Provost Guard is encouraged to attend one of our regularly scheduled meetings held on the third Thursday of each month at 7:00 pm in the Lower Level to see what’s going on in the Unit. Just contact any Provost or our Membership Captain Greg Norton at [email protected] or by phone at 680-4055.

By: Chad Fuller

Thank you, thank you, and thank you!!! The Shrine Bowl of Nebraska would like to thank all Clubs and Units for your support in helping sell the cash calendars the past few months. Once again, Tangier led that way by outselling the other two temples. Overall, you all sold more than 1600 calendars. All together, there were almost 2,300 calendars sold. Good Job!! The winners have been drawn, and the checks were given to the Units and Clubs at the February meeting. If you were not present to get your check, they can be picked up in the Shrine Office.

Can you believe the Shrine Bowl game is only a little more than four months away? With the game on June 19, 2010, which is a month earlier than in the past, it is time to start thinking about selling ads for the program and sponsoring players that are in the Tangier region. So that means the Shrine Bowl kickoff meeting is just around the corner on March 19, 2010 at Tangier. It is very important for all Clubs and Units to be represented at the kickoff. This is where you are able to pick a player to sponsor. This is a vital part of the game. The parents and athletes love to put a face with the Shrine. When the Clubs and Units sponsor them it really makes them feel like they are important. So please be present at the meeting.

Last year we began a new option to have Nobles, Club, and Units sponsor the player flights to the Shrine Hospital. This is the most important aspect of the Shrine Bowl experience to the players. It really puts in perspective what they are playing for. Due to the overwhelming success last year, we will be giving the same opportunity this year. Whether as an individual Noble or member

of a Club or Unit, please consider pledging $230 for the player’s flight to St. Louis this June.

Again, we cannot continue to have one of the best Shrine Bowl games in the country without your support. So, again thank you and we will see you on the 19th of March for the Shrine Bowl Kickoff.

Racers By Jack Hill

No more school closings to dictate

Tangier’s open hours. That’s good news for so many of us who enjoy dropping in to meet friends and enjoy offerings from the bar.

By the time this article is in print, the Tangier Circus will be history. Racers continued their role of taking tickets. The Circus is always a high point since, regardless of the winter season, Circus-goers are in such a happy mood. Happiness is contagious.

We have heard the commercials that ask us to “eat more chick’n,” but for the Racers it should proclaim: “Have another ice cream cone!” Yes, the winter and so much piled up snow has taken a toll on hamburger night sales. Think spring and then spring forth and come to Tangier on Hamburger Night and top it off with a tasty dessert. Pie ala mode sounds just fine.

The parts for our racer engines have arrived. The next step is to have the stronger pieces installed in the engines to withstand the higher rpms that can be achieved with the engine governors removed. Last year, one car without a governor blew out its engine due to valve operations not keeping pace with the higher engine speed. Well, spring is coming and parade season is not far behind. Look for the Racers in their new driving shirts.

SamsarBy: Donnie Bowerman

Short and to the point, this time Nobles. It is BIG TIME for the “3 Rs:” Recruitment, Retention, and Restoration. These are three indispensable parts of membership and the duty and privilege of every member of any organization that wants to remain viable for generations to come. And that means us Shriners, as well. Like the Marine Corps, I’m looking for a few good men. I want to form three committees of 5-6 men each to wrap themselves around one of these three membership themes. Duties will primarily involve some not-too-frequent phone calling, especially for retention and restoration, whereas the recruitment team will help me focus on issues relating to Friendship dinners and the two annual ceremonials. Nobles, if you want our organization to survive and thrive, Tangier Shrine and I need your capable assistance. Think about it, decide what fits your interests most, and give me a call, email me, or let me know at any area Masonic function where our paths cross.

Again, I would like to draw everyone’s attention to two new websites for Shriners: www.shrinersvillage.com and www.beashrinernow.com. Those of you with Internet access, please take a few moments to explore these two incredible sites. These will become unbelievably powerful tools in our membership arsenal, so check ‘em out. And please take time to sign up as a Virtual Mentor. Thanks.

Tangier Golf League

By: Bill ‘Sully’ Sullivan

At this writing, we are up to our knees in snow and ice and the temperatures are still below freezing, resulting in a substantial

obstacle to the local golf game. We may need to call upon Al Gore to fire up his ‘global warming’ machine to open the golf season on time.

League play for 2010 will begin on Thursday April 29, and will continue for 18 weeks with two weeks off for the Moila Tournament and CSSA. See our ad in this issue.

A pre-season meeting for team captains and parties interested in joining the league will be held Saturday, March 20 at 10:00 am at the Shrine Center. Team captains should contact each of their team members to verify their plans to continue playing in the league and if new players will be needed to fill their roster.

Any Noble interested in joining the league and available to play Thursdays at 3:00 pm is welcome and should contact Bill ‘Sully’ Sullivan or Pete ‘Knickers’ Larson prior to the meeting date. Current teams are 6-man teams and each player is generally scheduled to play 12 of the 18 weeks. Players joining the league must be dedicated and committed to arriving on time and playing each week they are scheduled to play. All players must be in good standing with their Blue Lodge and the Shrine, and pay for the full season up-front so they have a vested interest in participating when scheduled.

Contact information: Bill Sullivan 339-6663; 290-9401 (cell); [email protected] (email) or Pete Larson 498-8392; 659-5960 (cell).

Golf is harder than baseball. In golf, you have to play your foul balls.

Temple CraftBy: Don Glasgow

I’m sure that all who had occasion to go by the fireplace hearth at Christmastime enjoyed the display there. Again we owe the display to the Ladies who do this.

Activity in the way of new projects or construction has been lacking the past month. Work was done replacing one of the emergency lights. A ceiling tile was damaged evidently by water from somewhere. This will be attended to by those more capable than I.

The Club is the possessor of a new wooden stepladder, purchased by Al Sesseman for use in and about the Center. There is a lot of need for such an item as there is always a small problem that needs attention other than shoulder high.

Several people have received notes from Monica Bruns, former bar manager. She reports that she is doing well out in Washington and enjoying the time with her mother. She must have good memories of the lounge, or she would not contact us with memos.

The dues are due and can be paid at the next T/C meeting which will be in April. No meeting in March as requested by President Al Sesseman.

Coincidence is God’s way of remaining anonymous!
