MAKE HOUSEHOLD DRAFTS A THING OF THE PAST (MS) -- Outside is below freezing and the heater is working overtime, but throughout the housethere are cold, drafty areas. Does this sound familiar? Specialists in the field say that any cold or drafty areas within a home are typically caused by airleaks within the building envelope. Air leaks can make rooms uncomfortable and allow the air toescape, forcing heating equipment to work continually to compensate.Whether building a new home or renovating, it may be worthwhile to consider a complete solutionthat makes household drafts a thing of the past. A modern insulation material, like that offered byinnovators Icynene, can both insulate and air seal in one step.Spray foam insulation seals the entire building envelope and provides a cost-saving option forhomeowners looking to reduce energy waste and save on their monthly energy bills. Over thelong-term, the savings quickly add up. Modifications to the way you manage your home's energy consumption leads to significant finan-cial rewards and reassurance. Consulting a professional, such as an energy rater or inspector, will help make an educated assessment to the actual requirements within the home and wherethe value lies. More information can be found at www.icynene.com.

    Home offices in tight spaces

A home office is a necessity for many adults these days. While some people have entire rooms available to house a home office, others have to make do with less space, and that can mean fitting an office into a tight space. The first step in establishing a smallhome office is figuring out the space you have and any limitations that may accompany it. For example, maybe you have an unusedcorner in the living room but don't want to have wires and equipment out in the open. An armoire-type desk that can be closed whennot in use is a viable option in such a situation. Perhaps there is an unused closet in a bedroom. A wall-mounted desk surface, suchas a piece of custom-cut countertop material, complete with foldaway mouse and keyboard tray can easily turn the space into acompact nook. Maybe there is an entryway with a small table that would be large enough for a laptop. A stool or ottoman that canbe tucked under it can serve as a desk chair and extra seating for company.

    THE VALUE IN KNOWING R-VALUE

(MS) -- If you are in the midst of renovating or building your home, it is likely you have heard theterm "R-Value" being thrown around. Understanding what it means and its importance is the realtest. Measuring the ability to limit the heat flow transferred through insulation is known as R-Value, sayspecialists in this field. Augmenting the traditional insulation in walls and ceilings is not typically re-garded by industry specialists as an effective short-term or long-term solution, since it does notoffer air sealing capabilities the way modern alternatives do. Spray foam insulation, like that available from innovators Icynene, provides a consistent R-Valueplus air seal in one step without the potential for sagging, settling or gaping that traditional insulationmight. Adding further layers of insulation in a traditional environment just to increase R-Value eventuallyproves superfluous and ineffective with very little payback over the long-term. The United States Department of Energy says that compressed insulation will not provide its full R-Value. Moreover, the installed R-Value will differ from the insulation R-Value itself due to heat flowaround the home making it imperative that the insulation is properly installed by a professional whoknows their product and how they work.Homeowners should stay ahead of the curve and understand what is right for their home to ensureits long-term sustainability. Further information on R-Values and air sealing can be found atwww.icynene.com.

    AVOID SHIVERINGTHIS WINTER

(MS) -- January and Febru-ary are typically consideredthe coldest months in thenorthwest, northeast andmidwestern United States. Itcan be tough for homeown-ers trying to bear the coldwithout running up heatingcosts. Yet with some plan-ning and investment, we canavoid the winter chills. An effective and efficientheating system needs a solidair barrier, say specialists.Traditional insulation materi-als are regarded as econom-ical options. However, thesesame materials can con-tribute to unnecessary heatloss. Innovations, like the sprayfoam insulation from leadingname Icynene, afford home-owners an upgraded insula-tion system that alsoprovides an air barrier. Understanding what prod-ucts are available allowshomeowners to reduce en-ergy bills for a warm winterand be ready for a cool sum-mer. More information canbe found atwww.icynene.com.

CUT THAT ENERGY BILL AND STAY GREEN (MS) -- Homeowners continueto seek creative ways to re-duce monthly expenses whilebeing more environmentallyconscious. Knowing where yourmoney is being spent gives youa better understanding of howand where to make efficiencies. The United States Departmentof Energy says that householdheating and cooling accountsfor around 54 percent of the av-erage American's utility bill.Savings could be achievedthrough proper equipmentmaintenance and upgrades. However, the Department ofEnergy explains that an energyefficient furnace alone will nothave as great an impact on en-ergy bills as using a whole-house approach.Consider a home's wall infrastructure. If traditional insulation material has been installed, replac-ing it with a modern alternative can help alleviate the high monthly energy costs. Stop-gap solutions such as caulking and sealing cracks might not be sufficient. However, sprayfoam insulation, like that available from innovators Icynene, provides a complete solution sealingany gaps that would allow heating and cooling to escape. Understanding what eco-friendly solutions are available to help you save money can be foundat www.icynene.com.

THE END HAS come upon the four corners of the land! Now the end is upon you, I will unleash my anger against you and judge you according to your conduct and lay upon you the consequences of all your abominations. Ezechiel 7:2.On the day of the great slaughter, when the towers fall, the light of the moon will be like that of the sun and the light of the sun will be seven times greater like the light of seven days. Isaia 30:26.Therefore I gave them statutes that were not good, and ordi-nances through which they could not live. I let them become defiled by their gifts, by their immolation of every first born, so as to make them an object of horror. Ezechiel 20:25-26. • MAXFIELD COMMUNITY FOOD PANTRY CELEBRATESONE YEAR IN NEW FACILITY

The Maxfield Community Food Pantry opened our doors at itsnew home on August 29, 2011. It has been a very busy year atthe FP. Sixty volunteers from six churches in the Hadley-Luzernearea have kept the FP opened six days a week. During this firstyear we have fed 721 families or 2,142 people. Before the newFP opened, we were averaging 19 families per month, but nowwe average over 60 families per month.

Much of our food is purchased at the Regional Food Bank inLatham. They deliver to Glens Falls every month and we havemany volunteers that haul the food from there, in their own per-sonal vehicles. Some months we haul over 2 tons of food. Wealso purchase from other sources. This year we spent:

$16,480.24 at Regional Food Bank, $299.79 at Price Rite, $2,276.05 at Luzerne Market, $227 at Dollar Tree, $26.16 at Dollar General, and $50 other sources, for a grand total of $19,359.24, all of which was donated. We are not subsidized by any church or other or-ganization, other than by their donations. We have several organizations, businesses and individuals that donate to the FP on aregular basis, and we are very grateful to them. That is how we keep our doors opened and our shelves stocked.

It is becoming more difficult to obtain food from the Regional Food Bank. They are limited on what they can provide because of thenumber of Food Pantries that they sell to and their ability to obtain the food. Cost are also increasing dramatically. Because of thesefactors, we would like to encourage people to donate to the FP. There are several ways you can do this, and some of them wonteven cost you anything. Do you buy your Milk at Stewarts? Do you have them stamp your milk card? When its full, why not drop itoff at the FP and it will help us give family fresh milk! Do you ever shop at stores that offer buy one and get 1 free? If you do, howabout giving the FP the free item! Thats 2 ways you can help us without costing you anything.

Another suggestion we would like to make is when you buy your weekly or monthly groceries, pick up one item for the food pantry! If many people do this, it will keep our shelves filled. Many of the churches will have boxes to collect these items so you can takeyour item to church with you and wont even have to make a special stop at the FP. Some items you may consider donating are:cereal, juice, coffee, soup, pasta, pasta sauce, tuna, peanut butter, jelly, Hamburger Helper, mac & cheese, boxed mixes (cake, brownie, muffin, etc.) canned fruit or veggies. We also always need non-food items such as soap, toothpaste, shampoo, deodorant, feminine hygiene products, dish detergent, laundry detergent, and toilet paper.

We also would like to encourage monetary donations to the FP. We accept any amount any time of year, but with the holidayscoming soon, maybe you would like to donate in honor of a friend or loved one instead of buying gifts this year. When we get thesegifts, we send an acknowledgement to the honoree.

If you lose a loved one and would like to have people donate to a charity in their memory, the food pantry is a great suggestion. Itwould be helping to feed many people and what better way to honor your loved one!

In closing, I would like to thank the many, many volunteers that have worked building the food pantry, worked in the food pantry, hauled food for the food pantry, donated food or money to the food pantry, or contributed to the food pantry in any way. It is becauseof all of us working together that we have been able to feed 2,142 hungry people this year. Lets keep up the good work. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and youinvited me in Matthew 25:35

Respectfully submitted, Dianne Hastings, Food Pantry ManagerMaxfield Community Food Pantry
