The Yaddo Garden Association Celebrates its 20th AnniversaryBy: Barbara Hefter, YGA member

The Yaddo Gardens were originally established in 1899 and were a gift from Spencer Trask to his wife,Katrina. The design is based on Italian classical gardens and contains four oblong beds of roses. Thefountain pool on the great lawn directly opposite the mansion contains the statue of Dawn being awakenedby nymphs. Marble statues representing the four seasons stand guard over the rose beds. The statue,Christalan, stands alone in the pine woods and serves as a memorial to the Trask children. Christalanrepresents youth, chivalry and victory over mortality. The sundial on the balcony above the terraces in inscribed with a message specifically for Katrina Traskby her friend, poet Henry Van Dyke. It reads: “ Time is too slow for those who wait; too swift for thosewho fear; too long for those who grieve; too short for those who rejoice; but for those who love, Time isEternity.” Beyond the sundial stands the 38 column terra cotta pergola with its magnificent climbing roses. The

pergola was completely restored in 2009 thanks to the fundraising efforts of the Yaddo Garden Association. Situated behind the pergola is the rock garden with its many shade loving plants as well as stone fountainsemptying into a rill which flows to a lower pond. Back in Katrina Traskʼs time, this was a sunny spot butthe maturing of trees over the years have resulted in the garden now being a mostly shade garden. The Yaddo gardens were the victim of neglect and severe vandalism in the 1970ʼs and 1980ʼs. CharlesWait had a sundial made for Yaddo in 1990, to replace the one that had been stolen during earlier vandal-ism. Charles gave the sundial in memory of his father, Newman E. (Pete) Wait Jr., who had served formany years as Chairman for the Corporation of Yaddo. In 1990, while at the dedication of the new sundialand the planting of several rose bushes in the garden in memory of her husband, Jane A. Wait realizedhow few rose bushes were in bloom in the garden even though it was June. After a year of planning andrecruiting help from her friends, in December, 1991, the Yaddo Garden Association was formed. JaneWait was the YGA Founder and original President. In the spring of 1992 the gardens were tidied and 350new rose bushes were planted. For the past 20 years the Yaddo Garden Association (YGA) volunteers have tended to the gardens and

have restored the historic integrity Katrina Trask had envisioned. The many volunteers spend hours plant-ing, weeding, watering, deadheading, raking and giving tender loving care to the hundreds of plants inthe entrance garden, the rose garden and the rock garden. The YGAʼs success in restoration and continuous maintenance is due to the dedication of its many vol-

unteers over the years, as well as the support of the surrounding community and the Corporation of Yaddo. The YGA has received assistance from many local nurseries and businesses as well as a partnership withthe local BOCES horticulture students, high school and college students, and Girl Scout Troops. A major goal of the YGA was the restoration of the 38 column pergola which separates the rose gardenfrom the rock garden. After years of fundraising efforts including four Yaddo Mansion open houses, a quiltshow and raffle, sale of a cookbook and numerous garden parties, the pergola restoration was completedand the new terra cotta pergola was celebrated with a dedication ceremony in 2009.The Yaddo gardens are a gem in Saratoga Springs. The gardens are open daily, year-round from 8 a.m.to dusk, free of charge. The YGA conducts docent-led tours of the gardens every Saturday and Sundayfrom mid-June through Labor Day and Tuesdays during the thoroughbred racing season. Tours are at 11a.m., are $5 per person and begin at the main fountain pool on the great lawn. Tours last approximatelyone hour. Docents share the history of the Trask family, of Yaddo and the gardens. Special group toursmay be arranged at dates and times convenient for groups. Power point presentations are also availableto local groups who are interested in a program on the Yaddo gardens. 2011 marks the 20th anniversary of the Yaddo Garden Association. To celebrate this historic event, a

“Yaddo Garden Party” will be held on Sunday, July 10, 2011, 2 – 5 p.m. Proceeds will support futureYGA work in the gardens. Marylou Whitney and John Hendrickson are the Honorary Chairpersons of theevent. Garden tours will be available and a dedication ceremony and planting of the newly developedʻMarylou Whitney Roseʼ will highlight the occasion. Tickets to the Yaddo Garden Party are $50 per ticketand $100 per Benefactor. For an invitation to the Yaddo Garden Party or for more information, contactYaddo at 518.584.0746 or www.Yaddo.org.

WILTON, NY - Wilton, the fastest growing community in Saratoga County, is one of only a few remaining municipalities in the United States without a dedicated food pantry to help its residents. But with 461 Wilton families relying on food stamps in 2010, 17 percent of students at Dorothy Nolan and Ballard Road elementary schools enrolled in the Free/ Reduced meal programs, and the overall demand for food pantry services in the region up by nearly 50 percent from 2008, the need for a Wilton Food Pantry committ ed to serving local resi-dents has never been greater. “Hunger in Wilton is an issue,” said Wilton Food Pantry President Jared Dinsmore. Dinsmore, along with a dedicated group of Wilton residents, offi cially incorporated the Wilton Food Pantry (WFP) this past December in an eff ort to “create a sustainable organization capable of serving Wilton residents in need.” Th e new pantry is slated to open this July when space becomes available at the annex of the Trinity United Methodist Church of Wilton, located at 155 Ballard Road. “Th e church’s support in providing a location from which to help local residents, families and their children has been invaluable” said Wilton Food Pantry Vice President, Deb Zellan. Pantry board members are developing a network that will include local growers, retailers, wholesalers and the Regional Food Bank to procure food “Establishing partnerships with local businesses and organizations is the key to our long term success,” said Dinsmore. Prior to the establishment of WFP, Doris Wilder single-handedly worked to assist Wilton residents in need, helping to put food on struggling families’ tables. Wilder, who stepped down in 2009, is an inspiration to WFP and an example for those who wish to contribute their time and eff orts. “Volunteers will be the backbone of our organization,” said Zellan. Th ose interested in helping WFP can sign up to volunteer on the pantry’s website at: www.wiltonfoodpantry.org. Th ere are approximately 500 Wilton families in need of supplemental food, according to the needs assessment study conducted by the pantry’s board this past fall, and not all of these families are able to reach the heavily traffi cked food pantries at the Saratoga EOC or Franklin Community Center. With community involvement, the new WFP can step up and “play a vital role in the region by providing relief to our friends and neighbors facing diffi cult times," said Dinsmore. Th is week, the WFP will be launching the ‘Plant a Row for the Hungry Campaign’ (PAR), a national pro-gram started in 1995. Local gardeners and farmers are encouraged to plant an extra row in their gardens and donate the harvest. Gardeners can pick up a special PAR row marker and brochure at Hewitt ’s, Ellithorpe's, any of Wilton’s Saratoga National Bank branches, or at the Wilton Town Hall. Th e Wilton Food Pantry is seeking additional community partners, volunteers, and donations of shelving, refrigeration, freezers, non-perishable food items and monetary support. For more information, visit the new Wilton Food Pantry website at: www.wiltonfoodpantry.org.
