THE POPPY, a simple red flower, became the memorial flower after World War I when ser- vicemen returning home remembered the fields of pop- pies growing around and on the battlefields where their comrades fought and died. To the Taxpayers of the Hadley-Luzerne School District:My name is Karl Othmer, I am a 35 year resident of the Town

of Day, and I am running for the School Board. I graduated fromHadley-Luzerne in 1982, went on to receive a BS and MS in Elec-trical Engineering, and I currently work as a Distribution Field En-gineer for National Grid.

After attending nearly every board meeting in 2011 and watch-ing the process used to develop the 2011/12 school budget, itwas apparent to me that changes need to be made on the board. In these fiscally challenging times, we need people on the boardwho are not afraid to examine the budget line by line and chal-lenge the administration to make sure that every dollar is beingspent in the most advantageous way for our students.

The final budget adopted by the School Board for the 2011/12school year is more fiscally responsible and I encourage every-one to vote YES on it. However, this budget was predominantlythe result of the efforts of one man, Duane Moulton. Mr. Moultonwas the only board member willing to dig into the details of thebudget and identify the “fluff” that the administration has been re-questing for years and the board has just been rubber stamping.Meanwhile, my opponent did little to help develop this yearʼsbudget and was an integral part in developing a budget for lastyear which presented the taxpayers with a 25% tax increase.

Even at a net 1% tax decrease for this year, the foundation ofthis budget is based on the previous yearʼs budgets that includedaverage tax increases well above the level of inflation. This isunacceptable for the all the members of our community but it willprove even more difficult for those on fixed incomes, those whohave seen their jobs disappear, and those whose wages haveactually decreased over the last few years. In these challengingeconomic times, it is crucial that our school administration, likeall of us, be responsible and accountable for the financial and op-erational decisions they make.

I am a firm believer that we can increase the quality of the ed-ucation we provide the students at Hadley-Luzerne CentralSchool while decreasing the cost. This will not be easy, but it canand must be done.

I look forward to working toward these goals and I appreciateyour vote on Tuesday, May 17th.

Thank YouKarl Othmer

CLASS OF 2013 CAR WASH/BOTTLE DRIVE on Saturday, May14th from 11am-2pm at the Saratoga National Bank parking lot.Come and support our class!!

I strongly support Colleen Stuttard for Corinth Central SchoolDistrict (CCSD), Board of Education (BOE). I know her very wellbecause she is my daughter. Colleen has lived in the Village ofCorinth since 1985. She graduated from CCSD. She now has 3children presently in the CCSD.

I believe that she will be able to make objective decisions, eventhough I am almost always in the public at the BOE meetings, and we have not always agreed upon different points. My name is Lori Baker and I am seeking your support to fill thevacancy on the Corinth Central School Board of Education. I am interested in serving our community in this capacity for sev-eral reasons. First and foremost as a parent, I would like to seeall of our children presented with as many opportunities as ourschool district is able to support. However, as a community mem-ber I understand the economic hardships faced by our residents. My duty as a member of the Board of Education will be to balancethe needs of our children with the needs of our community whenmaking any decisions. Finally, as an employee of the Head Startprogram I provide support to children and families, which hastaught me to be open minded and creative in my thinking beforedrawing conclusions.I have been actively involved with Girl Scouts and Corinth LittleLeague, and I served on the Strategic Planning Committee forthe Corinth school system. My time volunteering for those or-ganizations has allowed me the opportunity to grow and developas an individual, while supporting the youth of our community. Ibelieve in the value of our educational system while maintainingan awareness of the needs of the community, which is why I amasking for your support in the upcoming school board election.Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,Lori Baker

Grubs: The Ugly, Silent Lawn Killers(NAPSI)—Grub damage is occurring all over the country. In San Ramon, California, work crews had to treat and repairsports fields that were torn up by animals feeding on grubs un-derneath the turf. The Connecticut County Extension Service says grubs are theNo. 1 insect problem responsible for killing grass in the North-east.If you search for grubs on Flickr, youʼll find plenty of examples oflawns damaged by the insect. What Are Grubs?White grubs are the larvae of Japanese, June and May beetles.Theyʼre usually less than 11/2-inches long and theyʼre curled intoa C-shape.They live underground and feed on the roots of your lawn. Themost serious problems occur in late summer and fall, but you canalso see damage in late spring.“Grub damage can resemble other problems, so diagnosis canbe tricky,” said Lance Walheim, author of “Lawn Care for Dum-mies” and lawn care expert for Bayer Advanced™.Youʼve got a grub problem if you see:• Dead, brown patches in your lawn.• Wilting grass, even when itʼs watered.• Birds, moles, possum and raccoons digging in your yard.• Lots of beetles flying around.Another sign: You can lift up the grass like a rug and see grubsunderneath. If you need fast action or easy prevention measures, check outwww.BayerAdvanced.com for its 24-hour Grub Killer Plus I gran-ules (kills grubs within 24 hours) and the new Season-Long GrubControl ready-to-spray formula (kills grubs all season long). Al-ways read and follow label directions.Deep, infrequent watering, fertilizing once or twice a year and

mowing at the correct height for your grass with a sharp bladecan keep your lawn healthy and less susceptible to pest damage.

Donʼt Be “Fuelish” WithYour Lawn Mower Care

(NAPSI)—When it comes togetting the most from a lawnmower or other power equip-ment, using the wrong blend offuel or skipping off-seasonmaintenance just wonʼt cut it.

The fuel blends and ethanolpercentages that may be rightfor cars—an ethanol concen-tration greater than 10 per-cent—are not recommendedfor power equipment or marineengines.

Also, any fuel blend stored inan unused engine may de-grade over time and harmsmall engines.

Thatʼs why, experts say, itʼs agood idea for consumers totake lawn mowers and otherpower products to an author-ized dealer at the end of eachseason. “This is a good way toallow a trained professional toproperly dispose of unusedfuel and ensure the product isready for next season,” saidMike Rudolph, senior man-ager, Honda Engines.

Consumers can also use fuelstabilizer when not using anengine for more than 30 days.To learn more, visit the Out-door Power Equipment Insti-tute at www.opei.org.

OUTDOOR FEATURE TRENDS GROWING IN POPULARITY(NAPSI)—Whatever the economic climate, homeowners prefer landscape trends that let them make themost of the weather in their own outdoor space.A recent American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) Residential Trends Survey asked residentiallandscape architecture professionals to rate the popularity of different outdoor living and landscape fea-tures. Todayʼs homeowners, the survey said, prefer function, efficiency and fire pits, choosing such basicfeatures as light, fire, food and a place to sit and enjoy it all.Overall, 96.2 percent of respondents rated exterior lighting as somewhat or very popular for this year, fol-lowed by fire pits/fireplaces (94.2 percent), seating/dining areas (94.1 percent), grills (93.8 percent) andinstalled seating like benches or seat walls (89.5 percent). While the most popular outdoor features reflect an enduring sensibility, the interest in modern technologysuch as stereo systems (58.3 percent), Internet access (46.3 percent) and televisions (45.4 percent) addsto the growing trend of taking what people enjoy inside to the outdoors—up to a point. Only 10.4 percentof respondents thought outdoor sleeping areas would be popular this year.“Homeowners continue to reconnect with their outdoor space. However, expect many households thisyear to either phase in projects overtime or carefully select fewer fea-tures,” said ASLA executive vicepresident and CEO NancySomerville. When it comes to landscape ele-ments, efficiency and sustainabilityreign supreme. Very popular arelow-maintenance landscapes (94.2percent), native plants (87.2 per-cent), water-efficient irrigation (83.1percent), ornamental water features(81 percent) and food/vegetable gar-dens (80.3 percent).Other popular sustainability featuresinclude permeable paving (77 per-cent), reduced lawn (72.6 percent)and rainwater harvesting (63.6 per-cent).More information can be found atwww.asla.org/residentialinfo.

Spring Into Cleaning(NAPSI)—Cleaning may notbe your idea of fun in the sun,but the Institute of Inspection,Cleaning and Restoration Cer-tification (IICRC) offers a fewtips to help make it a breeze:• HVAC filters—use qualityelectrostatic filters that attractparticles to the filter. Cleanonce per month.• Increase vacuum fre-quency—since about 75 per-cent of carpet soil is dryparticulate, vacuuming moreoften prevents soil from em-bedding deep into carpets.• Use high-efficiency filterbags—high-efficiency particu-late air (HEPA) double-linedvacuum filter bags filter out 99percent of particles that causerespiratory irritation.• Carpet cleaning—a profes-sional carpet cleaning is an in-tegral part of the springcleaning process and helps toreduce allergens in the home. For professional cleaning jobs, look for an IICRC CertifiedFirm. Confirm their training andcertification and always obtaina written estimate. To locate acertified professional and formore information, visitwww.certifiedcleaners.org orcall (800) 835-4624.
