This list will be updated as new resources are recommended and older ones are no longer available. A list of additional learning resources can be found on the Ministry of Education website.

(CAN) indicates that a Canadian contributed to the development of the resource and/or that it includes Canadian content. (SK) indicates that a Saskatchewan person contributed to the development of the resource and/or that it includes Saskatchewan content. Resources evaluated and recommended as support for the Western and Northern Canadian Protocol curriculum frameworks and Saskatchewans provincial curricula have the designation (WNCP) before the annotation.

Other resources beyond those recommended in this list may effectively support Mathematics 6. It remains the responsibility of educators to preview and select materials that best meet the needs of their students, school, and community. Educators should choose these materials in accordance with the school divisions learning resources selection policy.

Pricing of the learning resources contained in this list is subject to change without notice.

Manipulatives are an essential component of an effective mathematics program, leading to the development of deeper understanding of mathematical concepts. Included are charts outlining the types of manipulatives needed, the suggested uses, and the suggested quantity recommended (where appropriate). Some manipulatives may be collected; others may be constructed; and many may be purchased. The main distributors for these materials are Exclusive Educational Products at www.exclusiveeducational.ca and Spectrum Nasco Educational Supplies Ltd. at www.spectrumed.com. Please consult these companies catalogues for purchasing information.

The Ministry of Education expresses its appreciation to publishers, producers, and distributors who have provided learning resources for evaluation, and gratefully acknowledges the contributions made by educators who served as evaluators.

Empty, 1 col right side page

Mathematics: Core Learning Resources Grade 6

Mathematics: Core Learning Resources Grade 6 | vii

Mathematics: Core Learning Resources Grade 6

ManipulativesItem Suggested Uses (Strands) Suggested Quantity

Alge-tiles Patterns and Relations Number

6-10 sets per classroom (approximately 1 set per 3 students)

1 overhead set

Balance Patterns and Relations 1 per 4 students

Calculator (4 operations) Across strands 1 per student

Colour Tiles (including tiles for use with overhead)

Shape and Space Number

At least 40 per student

Cuisenaire Rods Number 1 set per 2 students

Fraction Materials (circles, strips, pattern and fraction blocks, fraction rings, fraction grids)

Number - 4 sets of fraction blocks per class

- Mixture of fraction circles, strips, rings, and grids so that there is 1 per student

Linking Cubes Number Patterns and Relations

3 large sets per class

Pattern Blocks (including overhead, or wooden blocks, stickers or stamps)

Number Patterns and Relations

1 set per 5-6 students

Money (coins, including loonies and toonies, bills, stamps)

Number (skip counting, decimals)

10 sets per class

Counters

- Overhead

- 2-sided

Number - One set of overhead counters per class

- 1 set of 2-sided counters per 2 students

Dice

- 4-sided, 6-sided (0-5 and 1-6), 8-sided, 12-sided, 10-sided, 20-sided

- Overhead, blank, fraction, dots, numerals, and words

Number Statistics and Probability

- 2 of each number of sides per 2 students

- At least 1 pair of overhead dice per class

-1 set of blank dice per class

Linear Measuring Materials (rulers starting at the edge and not starting at the edge, measuring tapes, metre sticks, trundle wheels)

Shape and Space - 1 ruler per student

- 1 measuring tape per 4 students

-1 metre stick per 4 students

Power Polygons Shape and Space 1 set per 4 students

Patty Paper Shape and Space 1 package per class

Grid paper (including transparent) Number Patterns and Relations Shape and Space

As required

viii | Mathematics: Core Learning Resources Grade 6

Mathematics: Core Learning Resources Grade 6

Empty, 1 col right side pageEmpty, 1 col right side page

Manipulatives (continued)Item Suggested Uses (Strands) Suggested Quantity

Mira/Reflect View Shape and Space 1 per 2 students

3-D Geometric Shapes - Power Solids

Shape and Space 5 sets per class

Various media (e.g., magazines, newspapers, Internet, databases)

Number As required

Protractor Shape and Space 1 per student

Probability Materials (marbles, cards, coins, centimetre cubes, two-sided counters, blank spinners)

Statistics and Probability Various, as needed

10 x 10 Geoboards Shape and Space 1 per 2 students plus elastics, as needed

Mathematics: Core Learning Resources Grade 6

Mathematics: Core Learning Resources Grade 6 | 1

Print Resources

Suggested UseProfessional Resource

Publisher/DistributorNational Council of Teachers of Mathematics1906 Association DrRESTON VA 20191-1502(800) 235-7566(703) 620-9840Fax: (703) 476-2970E-mail: orders@nctm.orgWebsite: www.nctm.org

Price: $76.00 U.S. with NCTM membershipISSN: 1075-5836

Copyright: 2001Year Recommended: 2005

Mathematics Teaching in the Middle SchoolAnnotation(CORE) Published nine times a year, this journal from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) provides a range of in-depth articles and features including practical lesson ideas, teaching strategies, and problems to investigate with students. It provides an authentic example of ways to integrate First Nations, Mtis and Inuit content, to incorporate cultural ways of knowing, and to bridge gaps between different ways of knowing and understanding. The series includes cultural stories given by Elders.

Note: Imperial measurements, along with some metric measurements, are used. Also, the term Eskimo appears instead of Inuit which is the culturally appropriate term in Canada. Teachers are encouraged to use and adapt the materials as needed to support Saskatchewans mathematics curriculum.

PublisherDetselig Publishers Ltd.

DistributorTemeron Books Inc.Suite 210, 1220 Kensington Rd NW CALGARY AB T2N 3P5(403) 283-0900Fax: (403) 283-6947E-mail: temeron@telusplanet.netWebsite: www.temerondetselig.com

Copyright: 2005-06Year Recommended: 2007

Title ISBN PriceSalmon Fishing: Investigations Into Probability

978-1-55059-305-1 $32.95 (text, 2 CDs, and 2 posters)

Star Nativation: Explorations Into Angles and Measurement

978-1-55059-337-2 $45.95 (text, reader, CD, and poster)

6 7 8 9 10 11 12

Math in a Cultural Context Series: Lessons Learned from Yupik Eskimo EldersAuthors: Adams, Barbara L., Kagle, Melissa, George, Frederick, and Lipka, Jerry

Annotation(CORE) Modules in the Math in a Cultural Context Series: Lessons learned from Yupik Eskimo Elders provide an example of how to explore the multiculturalism of mathematics.

In Star Navigation: Explorations into Angles and Measurement students develop their navigation skills as they observe the patterns of the Sun related to time and location. After investigating properties of angles, students apply their knowledge to navigating situations. As daytime navigating creates a simplified problem, most of the module develops foundational thinking in this framework. As students become skilled with daytime navigating, they learn Fredericks methods for night time navigating. Using the constellations, students extend their daytime methods, which focus on two-dimensional measures, to the night time situation, which uses three-dimensional measures.

Salmon Fishing: Investigations Into Probability offers the perspectives of a Yupik subsistence fisher. Knowledge of the salmons life cycle, how to fish, and where to fish determine the probabilty of catching fish. This module embeds Yupik cultural values, and introduces Yupik games of chance to further explore concepts of probability and fairness.

Mathematics: Core Learning Resources Grade 6 | 3

Mathematics: Core Learning Resources Grade 6

Suggested UseTeacher Reference

Publisher/DistributorNational Council of Teachers of Mathematics1906 Association DrRESTON VA 20191-1502(800) 235-7566(703) 620-9840Fax: (703) 476-2970E-mail: orders@nctm.orgWebsite: www.nctm.org

Copyright: 2001Year Recommended: 2005

Title ISBN PriceNavigating Through Algebra in Grades 6-8

978-0-87353-501-7 $44.95 U.S. pbk.

Navigating Through Data Analysis and Probability in Grades 6-8

978-0-87353-547-2 $32.95 U.S. pbk.

Navigating Through Geometry in Grades 6-8

978-0-87353-513-7 $49.95 U.S. pbk.

Navigating Through Number and Operations in Grades 6-8

978-0-87353-575-5 $32.95 U.S. pbk.

Navigating Through Probability in Grades 6-8

978-0-87353-523-6 $39.95 U.S. pbk.

Navigations SeriesEditor: House, Peggy A.

Annotation(CORE) These activity-based learning resources introduce, develop, and extend student thinking and reasoning in various mathematical concepts.
