It is with great pleasure and gratitude that we present our 2011 catalogue of programs and locations. ELS Educational Services has had the privilege of serving our students and partners for half a century from our founding as an English studies publisher to our current status as a world-leader in international recruitment and education pathways. Today, ELS is:

• the foremost provider of Intensive English language instruction on university campuses in the USA

• the largest recruiter of international students for US colleges, universities and post graduate programs

• the leading provider of direct entry pathways to higher education: completion of ELS’ English for Academic Purposes program is accepted by more than 600 universities as proof of English proficiency for admission.

ELS Certification is, together with TOEFL® and IELTS™, one of the three most-accepted admission standards for proof of English proficiency used by US colleges and universities for international student admissions. Additionally, ELS is:

• the largest single administrator of standardized English proficiency tests in the USA: TOEFL® iBT and IELTS™

• a leading partner with universities in developing pathways, bridge programs and specialized curricula for international students for delivery in the USA and at branch campuses around the world

• a leading provider of counseling tools, counselor training and standards for international student advising and recruitment

Over the past five decades, ELS has recruited and taught English to more than 1 million students. Each year, thousands of ELS graduates go on to earn undergraduate and graduate degrees in the USA. Many ELS graduates are, today, successful educators, business people and government leaders in their home countries. The greatest testament to their satisfaction with ELS is for so many of our graduates to entrust the education of their sons and daughters to ELS, as they increasingly do today.

ELS is consistently an active participant at both the local meetings of TESOL, the international organization for ESL teachers and administrators, and its annual convention as well. ELS typically contributes ten or more presentations to the annual event, which is attended by over 6,000 professionals from around the world. ELS staff also has a long track record of serving as TESOL officers.

The experience and quality of our ELS team contributes to our success. Our students benefit from a Language Center management team, which, on average, has worked for ELS for more than 10 years. In fact, more than 12% have had a career with ELS for 20 years or longer.

This year ELS will be teaching English and university study skills on 50 university campuses in the USA and in 10+ countries around the world. With our international ELS Counselor Certification Program, ELS University Guide online school search database and our overseas network of ELS trained counselors in 1,500+ authorized Counseling Agent offices, we are professionalizing student advising, enabling university recruitment, university pathways and student mobility throughout the world.

Thank you for your support and trust which have enabled our growth.

I have enjoyed the SSP class a lot, because I learned new vocabulary and grammar. My second favorite class was Reading and Writing; it helped me improve my reading speed and I also learned new words.

ELS provides instruction in listening, speaking, reading and writing of English. No matter which Intensive English Program or Semi-Intensive Program a student selects, ELS will provide placement testing upon arrival in the USA and will place the student in one of our 12 proficiency levels (level 101 through 112). Each level consists of 30 class hours weekly of teacher led instruction, per week with each session lasting 4 weeks. Each level includes class work, Language Technology Center individual study, homework, quizzes, compositions and a final level test. Classroom participation is an important part of our program.

At the end of each 4-week session, those students who have successfully met the requirements for that level will advance to the next ELS level of study and immediately begin the new session.

Students can begin their ELS program on any one of the 13 starting dates each year and can choose to study for any number of 4-week sessions. Those students who complete Level 112 of the English for Academic Purposes will receive our Level 112 Certificate, which is accepted as proof of English proficiency for admission at more than 600 colleges and universities in the USA.

intensive engLish progrAms English for Academic PurposesStudying at a college or university in the US is extremely challenging and requires a high level of English proficiency. The ELS Intensive English Program – English for Academic Purposes gives students the opportunity to focus on the academic skills they will need to succeed in their pursuit of higher education.

Intensive English Program – English for Academic Purposes students enjoy four hours of morning classes designed to build the foundation for communicative competency: two lessons of Structure/Speaking Practice (or Language Studies), one lesson of Reading/Writing and one lesson in our Language Technology Center. In the afternoon, students study for two hours in our Skills Enhancement Classes. These classes are designed to build on the core skills taught in the morning classes. Skills Enhancement Classes for the beginning level students (101 – 103) focus on basic oral and written communication skills and give students a chance to practice and gain skill and confidence with the content taught in their morning classes.

Starting at the intermediate levels (104 – 106), the Intensive English Program – English for Academic Purposes students begin to focus on academic literacy skills. One Skills Enhancement Class each day is dedicated to academic preparation, while the second class focuses on general English skills. Once these students reach the low-advanced level (107), both afternoon Skills Enhancement Classes are typically dedicated to improving academic reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. Because the academic preparation begins at an early level, and complements the core English skills taught in the morning, students acquire a high level of English proficiency and are well prepared for academic study.*

When students complete the Intensive English Program – English for Academic Purposes at Level 112, they receive a certificate that shows that they have fulfilled the English language requirement at over 600 colleges and universities in the US!

Certificates of Achievement | 17

* Certificate of Completion requires a minimum of 12 weeks of study as a student in Intensive ELS Masters levels.

The ELS AdvantageELS Textbooks Students in all levels keep their textbooks for their core listening and speaking classes (called SSP or LS). They are encouraged to write notes in these books, and highlight key words to help reinforce learning. Students in 101-109 keep their reading and writing books as well. Students in higher-level classes work from class sets of books while completing their own research projects. The ELS-branded textbooks were recently revised to reflect the very latest materials from the most respected authors in the ESL field. The books use content from Pearson Longman, the world’s largest and best-known publisher of ESL materials.

Standardized Level Completion Testing ELS, in partnership with Chauncey Group® of ETS, has developed exclusive level completion tests that accurately measure a student’s abilities upon completion of each ELS level. ETS is the producer SAT®, GRE®, TOEFL®, TOEIC® and other standardized tests. The tests are currently being modified to reflect the updated and improved ELS curriculum.

oUr cLAsses And LeveL progression Certificates of AchievementUpon successful completion of each level of your studies with ELS, you will receive one or more certificates. The Academic Report is our official, detailed progress report designed in the same style as many university transcripts. More than 600 US universities, colleges and career schools accept graduation from an advanced level of ELS as meeting the English language requirement for admission. Our certificates serve as testaments to your achievements and are something you will keep and value forever.

Testing | 19

Pre-Arrival TestingTo help you better plan for your studies in the United States, ELS has created a Pre-Arrival Test (PAT). The PAT is a quick, inexpensive and easy way to determine your current English proficiency. With that information in hand, you will know approximately how much time you will need to complete a course of study at ELS. (Final level placement will be determined by the ELS placement test, which is given to all students upon arrival at the ELS center.) You will also know in advance whether you qualify for advanced-level courses offered by ELS, such as the Complete Prep Program for the TOEFL® iBT, ELS GRE® or GMAT® Prep Programs.

The PAT evaluates your grammar, listening, speaking and writing abilities in 30 to 50 minutes, online. You will receive immediate, computer-generated feedback on your grammar and listening skills after completing the test. And you will get teacher-generated feedback on your speaking and writing skills within 72 hours after taking the test. To find out more and locate the nearest ELS representative offering the PAT, go to www.els.edu for more information.

TOEIC® TestingThe Test of English for International Communication™ (TOEIC®) is the test widely accepted by corporations and government agencies around the world. ELS offers the TOEIC® Exam at the following Centers: Chicago, Houston, Oklahoma City, Philadelphia, Seattle and St. Paul. Students can register for and take the official TOEIC® test at these locations.

TOEFL® TestingTOEFL® iBT is the newest version of the ETS English proficiency test designed to assess English language skills in academic settings. The new test, delivered through a secure Internet-based platform, emphasizes integrated communication skills and communicative competence. Nearly one million people take the TOEFL® test annually as part of their application to 6,000 universities around the world, as well as several thousand institutions of higher education in the USA.

Now, through an agreement with ETS, ELS Language Centers has become ETS’ largest provider of Internet-based testing seats in the USA. Students can take the official TOEFL® test at any ELS Language Center* throughout the USA. All ELS Centers are authorized test sites for TOEFL® iBT. In addition, the ELS Complete Prep Program for the TOEFL® iBT is an excellent way to prepare completely and thoroughly for the test, and includes a reserved seat for the TOEFL® iBT for students enrolled in a full 12-week program.

hoUsing options

ELS offers a variety of living accommodations to suit your needs and preferences. Whichever you select, you will find your accommodations comfortable, inviting and ideal for your study in the USA.

Student ResidenceMost ELS locations on university campuses offer accommodations on or next to campus that will permit you to easily meet American students and experience American campus university life on a day-to-day basis. Living in a residence hall and eating your meals at the school cafeteria, you will have many opportunities to practice your newly acquired English skills, share experiences with other students and make lasting friendships.

HomestaysAll ELS Centers offer homestay accommodations with an English-speaking host family. ELS host families are carefully screened to ensure they provide a pleasant and safe “home away from home” for our students. Living with a host family can help you learn English faster while experiencing American customs and culture firsthand. Students often develop very close relationships with their hosts — friendships that can last a lifetime.

Apartment HousingIf you prefer a more independent lifestyle, you may want to live in an apartment near your ELS Center. Apartment costs and conditions vary widely depending on the location. Some ELS locations have special relationships with local apartment providers that welcome ELS students, families, married couples or executive clients. Many ELS Centers can advise you on finding a furnished apartment to suit your preference and budget.

“”

I think living in homestay is very good experience, because homestay means living in an America home and a chance to learn the American culture

It was really a fantastic choice for me to study here before going to the States. ELS Shanghai is just like an American campus, and it gave me the opportunity to adapt to an American lifestyle.

ELS provided me with the platform to prepare to study at an American university. I learned a lot from the ELS University Preparation Program that cannot be learned from an ordinary test preparation program, such as how to write a citation and variety of essays, as well as how to make presentations. With the help of ELS staff and teachers, I have finished ELS Level 109. I have also received conditional offers from Fairleigh Dickinson University, Adelphi University and IUPUI.
