Three Easy Chords

There are literally thousands of songs that you canplay with these three chords alone!

The A ChordThe 1st finger plays the 4th string, 2nd fret. The 2nd finger plays the 3rd string, 2nd fret. The 3rd finger plays the 2nd string, 2nd fret.Strum down over the top five strings.

It will help to rotate your hand out slightly, so thatyou can get all three fingers as close to the fret aspossible. The 1st finger will not get as close as the 3rdfinger.

The D ChordThe 1st finger plays the 3rd string, 2nd fret. The 2nd finger plays the 1st string, 2nd fret. The 3rd finger plays the 2nd string, 3rd fret.Strum down over the top four strings.

The E ChordThe 1st finger plays the 3rd string, 1st fret.The 2nd finger plays the 5th string, 2nd fret.The 3rd finger plays the 4th string, 2nd fret.Strum down over all six strings.

Chord Playing Tips•  When switching from the A to the E chord, the 2nd

and 3rd fingers move together from the 3rd and 2ndstrings to the 5th and 4th strings.

•  When switching from the E to the D chord, the 1st finger stays on the 3rdstring and moves from the 1st to the 2nd fret.

Bass StrumA common method of chord strumming is to single out the bass note, andthen strum the rest of the chord. The bass is the lowest sounding note inthe chord. For instance, when you strum the five strings of the A chord, the5th string, A, is the bass note. Here are the bass notes for the three chordsin “Goin’ to the Country.”

  E chord  = 6th string, low E  A chord  = 5th string, A  D chord  = 4th string, D

In each measure, pluck the bass note, then strum down over the highest

three, four or five strings. This pattern happens twice per measure.
