` In December 1993, the University of Mississippi MedicalCentre had a patent issued to them by United States Patentand Trademark Office on the use of turmeric for healing.

` The patent was contested by India's industrial research

organization, Council for Scientific and Industrial Research(C.S.I.R), on the grounds that traditional Ayurvedicpractitioners were already aware of the healing properties ofthe substance for centuries, making this patent a case of bio-piracy.

` In August the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office cancelled aU.S. patent on the wound-healing properties of turmeric whenthe Indian government proved that records had existed for thisuse for centuries.

` On May 15th, 2009, a federal court jury decided that Yahoo's messengerprogram with IMVironments which revolves around interactivebackgrounds that users can add to IM conversations infringes US PatentNumber 6,205,432, filed Acacia Research corporation.

The patent was described as follows:` An advertisement system and method are provided for inserting into an

end user communication message a background reference to anadvertisement. In some embodiments, the background reference causesan advertisement image to be tiled, or watermarked, across an end userscreen behind the text of an e-mail message or public posting.

` Acacia received a $12.4 million and 23% of all of Yahoos IMVironmentssales.

that relates to Internet navigation andInternet Protocol Television (IPTV).

` The claim involves the presentation ofcontent changed from HTML to XMLformat, a technology utilized by theiPhone.

of a screen, including zoom and

scroll functions that the iPhone uses.

1) 6778979 covering a system for automatic generation of queriesgranted to Xerox in 2004

2) 6236994 covers a method and apparatus for integration of information,granted in 2001.

` According to Xerox Google violates the 2004 patent with both AdWordsand AdSense ads, where Google generates huge profits.

` Yahoo allegedly violates the 2004 patent with its Search Marketing,Publisher Network, and Y!Q Contextual Search. The 2001 patent isallegedly violated by Yahoo with the Yahoo shopping service.
